  Staff Spotlight

Ms. Courtney is HSAT's

new office secretary. She is the lady you are greeted by when you check into HSAT!  She was originally trained in the med ical insurance field, but left her past employer in July of 2014 to join the HSAT team!

Ms. Courtney has a wonderful fianc, a twelve year old daughter, a twenty-three year old step-daughter, two cats and a dog.   In her free time she likes to camp with her family or read from  the Divergent  book series (a new addiction she has thanks to her daughter!).  Ms. Courtney is also an avid OSU Buckeye fan!

Ms. Courtney has really appreciated how welcoming everyone at HSAT has been.  Her favorite thing about working for HSAT is getting to

know all of the kids!  Make sure you say "hi" to Ms. Courtney the next time you visit the main office.

  Sports Dinner

The fall sports dinner was held Sept. 9 at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria. There were over 80 athletes and parents/guardians in attendance. The meeting covered many items regarding requirements for sports participation and concluded with a questions/answer session.

The athletes that were in attendance included high school volleyball, cross country, and football. It was great to see the turnout while having

the opportunity to talk to various athletes and parents.

There will be a winter sports pre-season meeting held in November for all basketball and wrestling athletes.

Keeping Healthy

With flu and illness season upon us regular hand washing  is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others.

It involves five simple and  effective steps:

1. Wet your hands with clean water and  apply soap.

2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together.

3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.

4.Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Grandparent's Day

On September 9th, HSAT hosted a Grandparents' Breakfast for grades K-2 in honor of Grandparent's Day.  During the breakfast, families were entertained with musical selections from the HSAT K-2 choir, led by Mrs. Childress, and received gifts of paper apples created in art class with Mrs. Holeman.  Students and grandparents finished the event by spending time together on the dance floor.

HSAT Volleyball

The volleyball program kicked off the second year of its probationary period as a hopeful candidate for OSHAA membership with its inaugural home game against Woodward High School on September 11th. The high school program has grown this year to include two teams - varsity and junior varsity. Both teams hung tough against Woodward with good volleys and a few very notable plays, including point-winning blocks from middle hitters Luesha Brown and Shawnice Crawford. The next home volleyball game will take place on Wednesday, October 8th, at 5pm against Waite High School.

 Rally for the Right

On Tuesday, September 16, 2014, buses of parents and supporters united in support of our school at the September meeting of the board members for the Ohio Department of Education. Parents from all Horizon and Noble academies in the state of Ohio participated in this dynamic and meaningful RALLY for educational options. They added their voices to a chorus of others and made a resounding statement regarding the importance of school choice for the students of Ohio.

Horizon Science Academy Toledo would like to express sincere gratitude to all of our parents and supporters for voicing their right to choose the educational institution their child attends. Your voice speaks volumes to your commitment of quality education for all children. Thank you for your attention and devotion to this important issue, as the successes of our students are evident and celebrated every day.

MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA

During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), we recognize the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States with celebrations of heritage and culture.

Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.
Mrs. Diaz and Mrs. Silva's students, grades 6th through 12th, will be celebrating this important event by learning and creating different projects that represent this rich culture with music, dance, food and g
uest speakers who will be representing Toledo's Hispanic population from our community.

We Have Not Forgotten

In honor of September 11th, HSAT and HSAS joined together to commemorate this significant and tragic event from America's past. After holding ceremonies within each building that included a moment of silence and discussions of the event, students in both buildings created "thank you" cards for the brave fire and police crews in Toledo. These cards were delivered by a group of students and staff to fire and police stations around the community.  We want to recognize and honor all the men and women that bravely serve our country and our community. We would particularly like to salute the members of our HSAT family that have served or are currently serving:

  • Mr. Bowen- US Navy
  • Mr. Bond- US Navy
  • Mr. Farrow- US Navy
  • Mr. Schnoonmaker- US Navy
  • Mr. Strahm- US Naval Reserve and Ohio Army National Guard
  • Mr. Samson- US Marine Corps

ALICE Training

Faculty and staff members at Horizon Science Academy Toledo received a lesson in ALICE school safety on Wednesday, September 3. ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate. It's a program utilized in schools, businesses, and other public buildings all over the county, and provides people with skills that could help play a vital role in their survival during an emergency situation.

 Robotics

HSAT is excited to have implemented another STEM course to their curriculum for this school year. Robotics is a class that is offered to grades 9-12 and provides a hands-on learning approach. In Robotics, students are working to build and program a metal robot capable of completing challenges and competing in a game. The Tetrix kit features metal structures with nut and bolt construction, as well as powerful motors and motor controllers. Students will have the opportunity to compete at the First Tech Challenge with their robots later this year.

Healthy Tidbits

Eating a balanced diet can do more than just get your parents off your back about eating your veggies. Consuming the right foods-a good mix of fruit, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy-will keep you awake throughout the school day and give you more brainpower to impress your teachers in class.

 Did you know....?

- A red bell pepper contains more vitamin C than an orange.

- Vitamin A, found in carrots, fish and egg yolks, is good for

   your eyes and eye sight.

- Spinach isn't just good for your body; it also contains ingredients

   that will improve your mood.
