Student Spotlight

Tenth grade student Marissa Muniz is an all-around great individual. Her personality shines everyday-she is always smiling and lifting the spirits of others. She shines in the classroom as well, ending last semester with a GPA of 4.22. Marissa strives to do her best at everything she does. She is also very involved with extra-curricular activities. Marissa is a member of IVY League mentoring, yearbook, cross country, softball, and newspaper. Keep up the good work, Marissa!

Staff Spotlight

Mrs. DeWitt and Ms. Hrinak teach 3rd grade at HSAT and make an awesome team! They work together to plan their lessons and bounce ideas off of each other. By getting ahead in their daily tasks, they have a chance to focus more on the teaching aspect, rather than paperwork. They do "OAA Wednesdays" where they dedicate one period of math and reading to OAA-based work. On Thursdays and Fridays, they have one period of "enrichment" and are able to pull individual students or groups aside to work on concepts they struggle with. During weekly tutoring, they work on OAA homework, pulling apart and solving each and every problem. Their teamwork truly helps keep the stress level down, allowing them to focus on the students and content! This has worked well for them as they had a 12.9% increase in English and 30.7% increase in Math scores between CSAT I and CSAT II!

Re-Enrollment Time!
HSAT's Re-enrollment period will open on March 3, 2014! Watch your mail for the paperwork that needs to be filled out and returned to guarantee your students' spot!

Upon completion and return of the forms, students will be eligible for incentives.

Collect Pop Tabs for Local Charity

Horizon Science Academy is collecting pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Toledo. This charity supports over 500 families each year by providing them a place to stay while their children receive medical care in Toledo. Here's what you can do to help: Save pull tabs from pop cans, canned soups, etc. and keep them in a sandwich baggies. When the bag gets full, send it with your student to their home room or 1st period teacher. Thanks for helping us support such a good cause. This will run through the end of May.

CSAT II Results
We are proud to announce that our 10th grade students earned the highest CSAT scores in the history of HSAT! Students made improvements in all areas, but a special congratulations goes to Mr. DeGregorio and Mrs. Russell for the unprecedented gains achieved in Social Studies and Writing. We look forward to seeing increasingly high scores when the students take the CSAT III during the week of February 3-7th, and we are confident these scores will translate into outstanding success on the OGT in March.

Student Ambassadors Promote Literacy
The student ambassadors began a program this year in partnership with Children's Discovery Center called Literacy Launch. HSAT's five ambassadors-Mileckia, Deserea, Brionna, Donovan, and  Jocelyn-spend their afternoons on Wednesdays reading to one and two-year-olds. When the reading time is over, they even help them learn skills like table manners, solving puzzles, and organizing toys. This program helps our students be leaders in their community and at the same time promotes literacy in our young children. As part of this program, we partnered with BGSU for their Martin Luther King Jr. volunteer day. Twenty students from BGSU became honorary partners for the day, reading to all age groups at Children's Discovery Center on Monday, January 20 as we honored Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream for equality for the community.

Black History Month Inspires HSAT

As everyone in education knows, February highlights the struggles and achievements of black men and women in history. Lesson plans surround the very important moments in history that opened the doors for African Americans and all races to achieve success in a nation that was free and equal. The student leaders at Horizon Science Academy asked for something a little more this year. Based on their suggestions, Ms. Augustyniak and Mrs. Wilbert created a month of inspiration based on the student's ideas.

A month of Inspiration celebrates not only the history of African Americans but also the living inspirational stories of our African American community leaders. These stories will be shared by individuals such as Senator Edna Brown, Chief of Police William Moton, Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson, and many other local Toledo successful doctors, CEOs, radio personalities, business entrepreneurs and professionals. Guest speakers who live here and now will share their stories each week during school, so that our students can be inspired by men and women who grew up here and continue to work toward their dreams every day. The students will listen to guest speakers such as Senator Edna Brown in honor and recognition of all African Americans present and deceased who have inspired millions over the years. Our hope at HSAT is that every one of our students, regardless of race or circumstance, will aspire to be more than they believe they can.

HSAT Hosts STEM Luncheon

Several Horizon Science Academy students were given the opportunity to showcase the science, technology, engineering and mathematic projects they have been working on this year at our monthly luncheon. These students were selected to help the community understand the different types of projects students work on here at HSA.

Different community members are invited each month to our luncheons. The community members provide vital feedback to the students on their projects and presentation. This month we would like to thank Tom Metzger, TARTA; Linda Alvarado, Executive Director of Community Relations; Randy Wharton, Owens Community College Dean of STEM; Dylan Wee, Alumni and UT engineering student; and James Diever, Buckeye Hope.

Spaghetti Dinner Was A Success

Thank you to all of those who participated in our Spaghetti Dinner in December. With your help we raised over $1,200 for after school activities and clubs. Over 150 people enjoyed a dinner catered from Spaghetti Warehouse, a raffle with over 30 prizes, and entertainment from our cheerleaders, dance team, and choir. Thank you all for making this event so successful.

Relief Committee Donates Toys

HSAT recently organized a relief committee to help those who are in need. This isn't just people in our building, but in our community and other communities as well. Once per quarter, the committee will decide on a cause to support. In December, HSAT faculty, staff, students, and their families donated brand new toys to be donated to Toledo Children's Hospital.

Thank you to everyone who donated toys for Toledo Children's Hospital. HSAT Relief Committee dropped off several boxes of puzzles, games, trucks, Barbie dolls, and lots more to benefit children at Toledo Children's Hospital!
Hosting Basketball Games
This year has been an exciting year for HSAT with the addition of our new gym. HSAT is hosting league basketball games on the weekends of February 8 and 22 as well as March 3 and 15. Admission is $2.00 for students, $3.00 for adults, and $7.00 for families. There is a concession stand that will be open during games for refreshments. To date, the games being held at HSAT have been a huge success. Hope to see you at the game!
HSAT Local Science Fair
The HSAT Local Science Fair will be held on Thursday, February 27 in the cafeteria.  Twenty-four hard-working student scientists will present their  science projects to judges. The students have completed an experiment, a lab report, research and a display board, all of which they will orally present to judges.   After receiving feedback from the judges, the authors of the projects will receive awards, and more importantly, will then perfect their projects and present again at CONSEF.  CONSEF is the Concept Schools Science and Engineering Fair on March 22, in Cleveland, where our scientists will compete against about 42 schools, alongside our STEM Expo teams, Math Demonstrations, and Robocon team all on the same fun-filled day.
