Miss Jill from the Lucas County Health Department has been a familiar face for three weeks here at Horizon. Miss Jill presented interactive sessions to the students in first through fifth grades emphasizing the importance of healthy and balanced food choices.

Establishing healthy eating habits.

-Helps our bodies grow and rejuvenate new cells as needed

-Helps form and a maintain strong teeth, bones and muscles

-Helps tudents focus and have energy throughout the day

-Helps the brain develop and retain new knowledge learned in school

One important lesson learned by our students is that a serving of protein should not be any larger than the palm of each individual's hand.   We are thankful for Miss Jill visiting the Horizon Family and sharing healthy eating habits. For more information please visit ChooseMyPlate.gov

Local Science Fair Prepares Students for CONSEF

The HSAT Science Fair was held on Wednesday, March  18, after school in the cafeteria.  The students, including fourth through 12th graders, displayed their projects and talked with judges about the hard work they have been doing. Students used the scientific method to answer questions ranging in topics from Biology, Human Behavior and Health to Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering.

Our honorable judges included many of our own HSAT teachers and administrators, retired teachers from the community, as well as science and engineering teachers from Owens Community College.  These judges donated their time to further the science and math education of HSAT students, and they deserve out heart-felt thanks.

All students participating received certificates for finishing, displaying and sharing their work with the judges and other participants.  Special Awards of Excellence were presented to the highest scores achieved.
Awards of Excellence also went to Joseph Farhoud for the Senior Division and Bashshar Haris for the Junior Division.

Black History Month Wax Museum

The 3rd grade students worked very hard to research a famous African-American and prepared a poster board about the person to celebrate Black History Month at our Wax Museum on March 11. They also used props that represented something about their historical person. During our Wax Museum, the students dressed up as the person and gave a speech explaining who they were. They did an outstanding job at the Wax Museum!! Great job 3rd grade!

HSAT Student Places in The Toledo Zoo Contest

To help celebrate the reopening of the Zoo's historic Aquarium and to learn a little about fish colors, Lucas County elementary schools were invited to participate in a special coloring contest.

Mrs. Holeman's art students colored a provided Toledo Zoo fish template and then HSAT staff voted on one as the contest entry to represent HSAT. Anna Walls' entry was chosen by the staff and also was chosen as a top 10 finalist by the Toledo Zoo! Anna's and our other school's submission are displayed in the Great Hall of the Zoo's historic Museum of Science building.  Great job, Anna!

Creative Corner

We live in a world of constant change. New data bombards us every second. Reality shifts faster than we can process it. Relying on the "tried and true" doesn't always work,;we need to come up with solutions FAST because the next problem is just around the corner.

Can you keep up? Do you have what it takes to be a productive problem solver?

No problem can be solved unless you can identify all the possible options to consider. We need to be fluent and flexible in our thinking. Hold up, you say, what does that mean?! To be fluent just means to have lots of ideas. Being flexible is being able to bend and twist. Just like we bend and stretch our muscles, our brains can be flexible by stretching what we know and using it in different ways. One way we can teach our brains to be more flexible is to practice brainstorming. I know, I know, another weird word we have to define! Brainstorming is simple, it just means coming up with lots of ideas, like making a list of possibilities. When we apply it to problem solving, it helps us identify all the possibilities to consider. For example, brainstorming really helps me when I have to decide things. Like when I needed to buy a new car. I just listed out all the possibilities, you know like Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, and Kia. Can you guess which one I chose?

Brainstorming can be fun. Take a minute and think about the question. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Write down every idea that pops into your head until the timer goes off. Don't worry about spelling or grammar; this is for your eyes only. There are no wrong answers.

Challenge your friends to a brainstorming contest. See who can come up with highest number of ideas. Read your list to each other and see who came up with the most original ideas.

Here is a list of ideas to get you started. Try to design your own list starter.

Brainstorm List

  • List all the questions that result in the answer 12 (don't limit yourself to math).

  • List all the possible uses of a wooden spoon (think big and small).

  • What can you do with paper bag?

  • How many circles can you find?

  • When can gravity be problematic?

  • How would life be different if we lived underwater?
