Student Spotlight

Senior Mariah Chery is any teachers "dream student." Mariah strives to do her very best at everything she does. She is always "on point" in the classroom. Mariah is a very creative and talented young lady, who is involved with Spoken Word and art. She plans to attend an art school after graduating and continuously works to develop her art, by volunteering after school with Mrs. Lovell. Additionally, she loves to write and is interested in Japan and Japanese culture. Keep up the good work, Mariah!

Staff Spotlight

There must be something in the water this year at HSAT. Three of our beloved staff members are expecting a child this summer or next fall. In addition to growing their own families, Mrs. Brinkman (middle school science teacher), Mrs. Collins (K-8 Dean), and Mrs. Russell (10 grade Language Arts)

have stayed focused on their HSAT families as well. Their dedication to our students is evident in their work every day. Congratulations and thanks for all you do!

Book Fair
Thank you to all of the students, HSAT families and staff for helping to make the annual Scholastic book fair a huge success.  The book fair was arranged and staffed by our dedicated PTO president.  We are also grateful for the assistance of all our wonderful PTO members. PTO is open to all of our parents and guardians and the meetings are the third Wednesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
PTO Fun Day
Fun Day is a day for the entire school to celebrate another successful school year.  This year, the PTO is sponsoring our annual fun day on June 10th. There will be a bounce house, obstacle course, laser tag, face painting, and balloon animals. Each class will get time on the field with the activities. There will also be a special lunch on that day. If you would like to volunteer to help on that day, please call the school and ask for Dean Wilbert to sign up.
Talent Show
The talent show is an event that displays several talents all at once.  Artwork will be on display that students have made throughout the year.  In addition, students will perform their dancing and musical talents.  Several school groups--choir, dance team, and Spanish Dancers--will be performing as well. Please join us in celebrating our students' talent on Tuesday, May 20 at 5:30pm. Doors open at 5:00pm.

HSAT Promotes Literacy

Students at HSAT want to make sure that all children who live in Lucas County have as much exposure to reading in their early years as possible. So every Wednesday afternoon they visit local preschools to read to the toddlers. The students read with one or two students at a time and help them with their colors, numbers, names of objects, and other skills. This has been a great partnership and learning experience for our students as well.
HSAT Donates Time to Ronald McDonald House
Since the beginning of 2014, the students at all three Toledo area Horizon Science Academies have been collecting poptabs for Ronald McDonald House. So far the three schools together have raised over 100 lbs of poptabs. The money raised will help the Ronald McDonald House provide free meals for families who have a child with a long-term illness that have to travel to any children's hospital or facility in the Toledo area. In addition to donating the poptabs, our student ambassador group spends an hour on the first Wednesday of each month volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house.

HSAT Staff Get to Experience Trip to Turkey

Six staff members from HSAT spent spring break touring the beautiful country of Turkey. Ms. Katie Coffey, Mrs. Patty Dowd, Mrs. Alma Herrera, Ms. Katie Miller, Ms. Kelly Miller, and Mr. Yalvach spent their time traveling the cities of Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, and Denizli. In addition to visiting several local families and experiencing the culture--we toured 2 schools in Turkey. They also rode camels, put their feet in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, took a ferry from Europe to Asia in Istanbul, shopped at the Grand Bazaar, tasted the delicious Turkish food, and enjoyed the hospitality of our Turkish hosts. It was a wonderful time had for all.
Softball Team Has Tremendous Season
The Jaguar Softball Team has had a tremendous season playing several Ohio and Michigan Junior Varsity and Varsity softball teams. The girls have worked really hard and have performed well despite their inexperience. In their last two games, they scored four runs and caught four of the five fly balls hit into the outfield. We are looking forward to a good season next spring with one year of experience under our belt and twelve returning players.
Students Compete in Spoken Word Competition

Spoken Word is a venue where student poets, lyricists and speakers can share their favorite poems, speeches, or even originals! This year, our eight participants learned how to perform effectively, and even change the world, using the power of words. This year's club culminated with Concept Schools 2014 "Words on Fire" Spoken Word competition held in Columbus, OH; all eight of our students performed and did a fantastic job!

Super Test Takers

It's a Bird, it's a plane, no, it's the HSAT Super Test Takers!  Students at HSAT were given a final testing boost when their teachers hosted a pep rally to show their support on the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA).  Students were praised for their efforts so far, treated to a super hero themed play, and encouraged with many incentives to participate.  Teachers and staff prepared a surprise motivational video to the song, "Happy," which the students enjoyed. Then everyone in the crowd witnessed a teacher led flash mob!  All of the grades 3-8 super test takers were honored and encouraged by rounds of cheering and clapping from staff, other HSAT students, and community members as they paraded through the building.  HSAT students have worked hard, and it is easy to see that their efforts will pay off!
