Student Spotlight

Tim Harris, a senior at HSAT, has really stepped up to the plate this year. He has been a big help to Mrs. Peters' kindergarten class for a few months. Mr. Tim, as he is known by the class, has great rapport with all of the students. In the fall, he went on a class field trip to a farm. He was brave enough to milk a cow, which encouraged the other students to do so. Besides being devoted to basketball, Tim is greatly improving his grades and plans on making the Honor Roll this semester. Tim always shows up to school with a smile on his face and spreads his positivity for all to feel.

Staff Spotlight

Those who know Mrs. Schauwecker can agree that she is very dedicated to what she does at HSAT. Not only is Mrs. Schauwecker the head of the English Department and the 10th Grade Chair Committee, but she is responsible for the recent Pro Quo Books donation of 10,000 books. She has also coached the girls basketball team through two undefeated seasons and won two basketball championships.

Students Fascinated at Art Museum

Mrs. Holeman took her 8th grade students to The Toledo Museum of Art to study works from a variety of times and cultures. After spending the morning in the museum, students walked across the street to The Glass Pavilion Museum where they were treated to seeing a glass blowing demonstration. The trip was inspiring and everyone had a great time.

Lucas County Auditor Visits HSAT
Ms. Augustyniak's 12th grade Economics class was treated to an exceptional guest speaker, Anita Lopez, on December 11, 2012. Mrs. Anita Lopez, the Lucas County Auditor, described her job roles and duties, along with her future plans to run for mayor in this upcoming Toledo City Mayoral Election. Ms. Lopez stressed that she was the first female to become auditor in the State of Ohio. She not only gave relevant and helpful information on economics, but she gave inspirational words that left students thinking that anything was possible.
Students Shine in Robotics Competition
Congratulations to HSAT's first Robotics team that earned 17th place at their first competition in Cleveland. Students worked through the weekend in preparation for the competition, even sleeping at the school! Of course, they did take some time to play PS3 and just hang out. Students Javier Buenavista, Teveon Ellison, Patrick Pettaway, Jacob Salinas, and Travon Denton enjoyed a weekend of competition and learning while in Cleveland. The team members worked with other students from HSA Cleveland and CMSA Chicago to learn new techniques before the competition. Congratulations gentlemen! We look forward to more wins.
Exploring Opportunities of College Life

HSAT seniors visited The University of Toledo on Monday, December 10. Students explored the opportunities they will have on campus during a tour guided by two students from UT. After the tour, students enjoyed an amazing open buffet lunch in the cafeteria, which was followed by a presentation by Ms. Crozier, Admission Coordinator. Students learned about the history of UT, majors the university offers, scholarship opportunities available to students as well as job opportunities after they graduate. Students will also visit Bowling Green State University on Wednesday, January 30.

Generous Donation From ProQuo Books

In December, HSAT was surprised with a semi-truck load of more than 10,000 books! Mrs. Schauwecker worked with HSAT parent Katherine Stewart and ProQuo Books in Toledo to organize the donation which took months of planning and coordination. ProQuo Books donated enough books to fill our entire library, stock a full bookshelf in every classroom, and provide elementary students with books they were able to keep. Everyone in the school was excited as the sorting process began and old favorites were discovered and "To Read" lists were filled. Thank you, ProQuo Books! We sincerely appreciate your generosity.

HSAT Hosts Toledo Area Spelling Bee

On December 17, 2012, the Toledo Area Spelling Bee was held at Horizon Science Academy of Toledo. The participants in the spelling bee came from four schools. HSAT students Sarah Fitzgerald and Jaleah Haynes, who participated in the regional spelling bee, placed in the top three spots. They will advance and represent HSAT in the Concept Spelling Bee Finals in Chicago on March 22, 2013. Each student who participated wore a t-shirt with the logo "to bee or not to bee," which was the slogan for this year's spelling bee.
