Jaguar Staff Spotlight

Mr. Schoonmaker graduated from the University of Toledo in 2003 with a bachelors degree in history and obtained his license in special education in 2010.  He has worked in behavior classrooms for Toledo Public Schools and as a substitute teacher prior to teaching at Horizon Science Academy. He has been with HSAT for four years now. He enjoys working at HSAT because of the small school environment.

"Everyone knows every everyone and when you aren't here you are missed.  The staff is like family and our students are our kids even across grade levels." says Mr. Schoonmaker.

HSAT Seniors Achieve Greatness

For the first time ever in HSAT's history, we've reached over  2 MILLION DOL-LARS in merit-based scholarships alone!

Our senior students have gone above and beyond our expectations for scholarships, and there is definitely more excellence to come.

Congratulations to the seniors!
STEM Enrichment

The Kindergarten and 5th grade classes spend 2-3 classes a week in STEM enrichment classes with Mr. Brangham. The students build and experiment each week to learn more about science in a hands-on, project-based learning experience. 5th graders have studied engineering, climate change, ecosystems, germs, and sound. Kindergartners have studied animals, insects, mammals, plants, planets, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

Super Jaguar Tutoring

Throughout the months of January to March, students in grades 3rd-10th have been attending Super Jaguar Tutoring every Saturday to receive additional instruction in Math and Language Arts. In addition to their core subjects each week, students had the opportunity to practice their critical thinking skills by working cooperatively on a variety of STEM challenges including building towers from newspaper and bridges from straws.
Celebrating Black History Month

HSAT celebrated Black History Month all around the building with door decorations and hallway displays of art work & student projects that focused on African Americans in all aspects of life - sports, music/entertainment, math, literature, science, and politics.

The month culminated with a day of celebration: assemblies with student performances & guest speak Mr. Albert Earl, CEO of Earl Enterprises, & the Black Heritage Gala.  The Gala had a spectacular performance from the Jaguar cheerleaders, and food catered by J'Mae's Home Cooking.   Students and their families enjoyed soul food while listening to jazz music and remembering the legacy left by their ancestors.

Taking It To The Hoop

The high school boys basketball team just got done with an exciting season. Highlights of the season include making it to the conference tournament championship game, beating Maumee Country Day twice, and finishing with a 9-8 record.

Coach Scott and  Reiter  are proud of the improvement from the team and the positive attitude they carried throughout the season. We are looking forward towards carrying on the tradition, but will miss the presence of seniors Henry Brown and Deshaun Jennings.

Spanish Dance Brings Home a Win!

Preparing Your Jaguar For Testing!
S tarting April 6th, 2016 all 3rd - 11th grade students began the new state tests  (Math and English, Science and Social Studies) tests. These tests are important because they will measure if your student is performing at grade level.

Help Prepare your students:
  • Make sure that your child does all their homework and reading assignments, this will help make sure your child is prepared for the test.
  • Keep a positive attitude about tests.
  •  Help them practice how to follow directions carefully
  • Mark down test days on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates.
  • Make sure that your child gets enough sleep on the night before the test.
  • Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high sugar foods that may make him/her hyper.
  • Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school.
  •  Talking about the test with your child can relieve stress about test taking.
  • Talk and meet with their teacher to find out the best way to help your child.
  • Praise/reward your child when they do well on a test or for their hard work preparing for a test.
  •  Encourage them to read as much as possible, and to increase her vocabulary - even reading magazines, newspapers, and comic books regularly will help improve her reading skills
