Student Spotlight

Meliha Eldek is having a very successful sophomore year. She is living proof that hard work pays off. She won 1st place in the Environmental Science category in the Concept Schools Science Fair. She even scored the highest out of her class on the writing OGT, even though English is Meliha's second language.

She was born in Istanbul, Turkey and moved to the United States three years ago. In her spare time, she enjoys going horseback riding, reading books, and being involved in the many activities offered here at HSAT.
Staff Spotlight

Have you ever wondered who is in charge of many of our memorable school events?   The answer is the very helpful, kind, and patient Mrs. Russell, who planned this year's homecoming dance and prom. Mrs. Russell is also the head of the yearbook committee for all grade levels. In addition, she has assisted in preparing many students for the OAA tests.

Mrs. Russell's dedication has helped HSAT have a successful year! In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son.  Thank you, Mrs. Russell, for all of your time and hard work.

HSAT Supports Oklahoma Tornado Victims

The 3rd grader has been studying economics in social studies learning about goods and services, consumers and producers, and expenses and profit.  Students were divided into groups where they had to create a product to sell at our Market Day.

They planned to use the money they made to have a pizza party; however, as we were discussing the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma, the students wanted to give up their pizza party and donate the money to the victims.  We are very proud of the 3rd grade students for showing such compassion for others.

On June 5 and 7, HSAT students participated in a dress-down fundraiser to support the Oklahoma tornado victims. Students each paid $1 per day to dress in green and white, which are Oklahoma state colors.

 PROM: Class of 2013

On May 18, 2013 HSAT's Student Council held the 2013 Junior-Senior Prom. The guests received a commemorative shirt to celebrate the milestone. Seniors James Fordham and Dazia Cooper were elected Prom King and Queen, and juniors Jacob Salinas and Mariah Brock were elected Prince and Princess. It was a fun time had by all!

Students Rock the Talent Show

Horizon Science Academy Toledo presented its annual talent show, Horizon's Got Talent on May 16. Our wonderful performers included talented individuals from grades 3-12. Their talents included: vocal solos and duets, a dance solo, an original rap, a piano solo, and performances by the HSAT Cheerleaders and Choir. A big thank you to Cedar Creek Church who allowed us to use their wonderful auditorium and equipment to make our performers look and sound their best.
Multicultural Event: We Are the World

The Foreign Language Department hosted a Multicultural Day representing a number of countries from all around the world. Students and staff members created display boards and posters with information about the country of their heritage. Parents, staff, and students enjoyed learning about different cultures and ethnicities, listening to traditional music, eating a variety of international food, and seeing artifacts from these countries.

Learning through Hands-on Experiences

The months of May and June have been fun-filled when it comes to field trips at HSAT. Students have had the privilege of attending some exciting places in the Toledo area.

The trips for May and June include:
  • Mud Hens Game for K-12 --  May 15, 2013
  • Challenger Center for 8th graders -- May 16, 2013
  • Toledo Zoo for 4th and 5th grade -- June 3, 2013
  • Holocaust Museum for 9th graders -- June 4, 2013
  • Toledo Zoo for K-3 -- June 10, 2013
  • Imagination Station for 4th and 5th graders -- June 11, 2013
We are very honored to be able to provide and plan such amazing trips. These trips have proven to be eye-opening and positive learning experiences. Their outstanding behavior and cooperation on these fields trips allows us to continue to plan trips like these each and every year.
R.I.T.E. Mentoring Recycling Program

The R.I.T.E. male mentoring group wanted to show the community that they care about the environment. Their project GO GREEN! encouraged teachers and students to recycle paper, plastic, glass, and cardboard.

The young men took their time decorating small containers and distributed them throughout the building. The nearest recycling location is Kroger at Miracle Mile on Laskey and Jackman. GO GREEN!
