Student Spotlight

Amoura Shimman, a kindergartner at HSAT, has adjusted extremely well to her new school routine! Amoura is a leader in her class, is always very kind to others, works hard everyday, and has a positive attitude. When she is not in school, she enjoys spending the night at her Grandma's house, going to the zoo to look at the gorillas and monkeys, playing with her toy horses, and spending time with her aunt, Alexis Stribling,  a former HSAT student.

Staff Spotlight

Miss Hrinak, 3rd grade teacher at HSAT moved to the Toledo area to teach from outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When you look into Miss Hrinak's room, you would never know that she is a first year teacher. She has built great relationships with her students and colleagues and has been described as having a heart of gold.  In addition to teaching 18 enthusiastic 3rd graders every day, she also advises the 3rd-5th grade Math Club. Outside of school, Miss Hrinak enjoys traveling back home to Pennsylvania to visit with her family and two nieces that she misses very much!
HSAT Stands up to Bullying

The students at HSAT will be observing Anti-Bullying during the month of October.  Each class will be discussing ways to help stop bullying.  Also, on October 9th, the students wore orange to show support for Wear Orange Day Campaign in helping to stop bullying. We had a banner for students to sign and contracts for students to pledge not to bully anyone. Let's come together and stand up to bullying!
Security and Safety Protocol

Visitors should always check into the Main Office when arriving to sign in and receive a visitor's pass. Parents are NOT permitted to walk their child to class unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. If you need to visit your child's classroom, please schedule an appointment with the teacher at least 24 hours in advance. The beginning and end of the day is extremely hectic, and teachers want to ensure that you have their undivided attention. This policy will be strictly enforced!

Fundraising Drive

Horizon Science Academy Toledo recently participated in the Give With Target contest in which Target stores awarded $5 million to schools.  Each school who participated could have friends and families vote online for their school.  Target would allow up to 10,000 votes per school and would give $1 for each vote.  HSAT was able to move to third place amongst area schools with a total of 428.  Next year the goal will be even bigger, with plans to obtain all 10,000 votes.  In addition, the school will be participating in an upcoming fundraising drive where students will be selling an exclusive HSAT discount card.  This card will provide discounts for up to twenty local businesses and can be used repeatedly throughout the year.  These cards will only be sold over the course of a two week span, so it will be important for all HSAT friends and families to buy them as soon as they go on sale!

 Teachers Walk for Teachers
HSAT understands the 'Power of Pink.' On Friday, September 27, staff and students paid $1 to wear pink to help raise money for Susan G. Komen of Northwest Ohio. Additionally, students and staff from all of our Horizon Science Academy schools in Toledo teamed up to Race for the Cure on Sunday, September 29. We walked in honor of a few of our beloved teachers, who are breast cancer survivors as well as many of our friends and loved ones. In addition to the walk, we designed t-shirts that we wore on race day. Way to go HSAT for raising $577 to help find a cure for breast cancer!
Grandparents Enjoy Breakfast at HSAT
Was Thursday September 27, 2013 Muffins for Mom? No, not that particular Thursday- Well then it must have been Donuts for Dad. Incorrect again!  Instead, when our awesome Learner's grandparents graced the school with their esteem presence, it was Breakfast with Grandparents for Kindergarten through second grades. A breakfast fit for a King or a Queen adorned the dining room that was soon bustling with family love.  Our awesome grandparents enjoyed a pleasant and delicious morning buffet with their doting grandchild to start the day.  The dining hall was vibrant with grand smiles as each learner entered and made haste in delight to share affectionate hugs with their loved ones.  Once the palate was content and happy, each grandparent received a VIP tour of the school that wrapped up in the classroom of their special student viewing their marvelous educational masterpieces.  HSAT wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to those who attended and helped make our inaugural grandparent day successful!
Student Experiments Wow Participants at BGSU
Horizon Science Academy was proud to partner with BGSU for their STEM in the Park exhibition on Saturday, September 7, 2013. With over 3,000 spectators in attendance, our students led science experiments ranging from robotics, square bubbles, lava lamps, walking on eggs, and many more. This was a tremendous opportunity for our students to lead in the community, and we are very proud of them.
Hands-on Thursdays
Students in Kindergarten, first, and second grades will participate in Hands-on-Thursday again this school year.  The program provides students with chances to interact with community agencies who visit the school and provide valuable activities.  In the past, students have had the chance to see demonstrations and participate with businesses such as The Home Depot, the local television stations, and the Lucas County Public Library   Currently, the Toledo Area Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are spending time at HSAT working with students on various engaging crafts and learning activities.  Students look forward to the community helpers coming into their classroom each week.
Check out the New Science Lab!
The high school science lab received a much-anticipated major update!  The traditional black lab tables have been replaced by state-of-the-art lab workstations.  These stations have remote control table height so that the students are able to adjust the height when working with labs that they need to stand for. When they are doing class work, these stations can be lowered to fit their needs. Installation of the workstations are completed, so take a peek as you pass!
Preparations are Underway for FLL and FTC
First Lego League (FLL) is a robotics competition which is designed to get children excited about science and technology. At HSAT, FLL is currently available to 7th grade students in PLTW and also to any 6th grader.  Mrs. Watkins' 7th grade team the "Concepticons" has been working for a month and are excited about an upcoming competition in December.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is designed for students in grades 7-12 to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments. Good luck to both teams as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
Food Drive Supports Feed Lucas County Children
The Kindergarten through second grade classes have initiated the second annual school-wide canned food drive. The drive is from September 19-October 18. All items collected will be donated to Feed Lucas County Children. Their goal is to collect 1,000 items, so bring in your canned food items to your first period teacher!
News From the Office

We ask that all parents/guardians make any necessary arrangements with your child in the morning prior to school. When parents call in and ask that we get a message to a child this causes disruption to your child's learning. Messages will only be given in case of an emergency. The message must be given to the office no children will be called out of class to use the phone. Many parents are calling at the end of the school day and this is a very busy time in the office as we prepare for dismissal.

Winter weather emergencies, such as snow and ice, or fog may cause disruptions in school operations, including the closure of school or a delayed opening. The following provides information about the procedures used when such disruptions occur:

  • Closure of School:  When schools are closed all instructional programs and extracurricular activities in schools are canceled.
  • Delayed Opening:  A delayed opening means that schools open two hours later than scheduled. Parents should continue to check the television in the event a decision to delay the opening of schools is reconsidered and a decision to close schools for the day may have been announced. Parents should check the TARTA bus schedule in advance so that the students know what time their bus would come should school be delayed. TARTA operators can be reached by calling 419-243-RIDE. If school is on a two hour delay, students must be their seats by 10:00 a.m. for K-8th grade students and 10:25 for 9th- 12th grade students. Office staff will not be available until 9:00 a.m. on these days.
  • Public Announcements:  Information about school operations is announced publicly as soon as possible on area television stations. You can find this information on the following television stations WTOL 11, WTVG 13, NBC 24. In addition, the message will be updated on the school voicemail at 419-474-3350
