Student Spotlight

Dedicated student Brendan Lewis has a great path of success ahead of him. He is in the Ivy League Mentorship program and a member of HSAT's undefeated basketball team. He says this school year is pretty amazing, and he is working hard to graduate high school. He plans to attend The University of Toledo to become a doctor.
Staff Spotlight

Mr. DeGregorio, one of our most charismatic and involved teachers, makes sure to devote his energy for the best of his students. Mr. D. wants to make a strong connection with students, just as his inspiring high school teachers did for him. In efforts to do so, he uses his free time on Saturday to prepare students for the OGT's. He also mentors the young men's RITE group and coaches the flag football team. With many life experiences, such as being part of a band and being a graduate of Ohio State University, any student can seek him for guidance.

Door Decorating Contest

In an attempt to inspire creativity and unity throughout the building, The HSAT administration challenged all staff members to participate in a door decorating contest this school year. Doors were judged at the end of each themed month by administrators who selected three winners. Staff members who participated in the contest every month also became eligible for an iPad raffle. We are happy to report that Ms. Jamie Cremean won the iPad raffle. Congratulations to Ms. Cremean and all monthly winners, as well as, thanks to all staff members who participated in this very fun, artistic, and friendly competition!

Students Accepted by Senator Edna Brown

On April 23, 2013, with the lead of Mr. Murat, Horizon Science Academy Toledo Student Ambassadors Alec Hensley and Pearline Young got to meet Senator Edna Brown in the state capital. Senator Brown currently serves as the Assistant Minority Whip in the Senate. Senator Brown is First Vice President of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus and serves on the Executive Committee of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. She is state director for WILL/WAND, a non-partisan national organization for women legislators. The students received a tour of the statehouse while visiting the capital, as well. Horizon Science Academy is proud to be an effective school and we look forward to sharing our academic growth with more members of the Senate and House of Representatives in future meetings.

Mud Hens' First Basemen Reads to Students

Toledo Mud Hens' first baseman, Danny Dorn, made a celebrity Leader Reader appearance at Horizon Science Academy Toledo.  He spent time in the kindergarten rooms reading favorites such as "Moosetache" and "The Boy who Wouldn't Share."  After reading to the students, Mr. Dorn answered questions about his baseball career.  The kindergartners were excited to receive an autographed Mud Hens team picture from their new favorite player!  Our school was excited to host such an outstanding local sports figure
 HSAT Rocked the Test

OAA Spirit hit the hallways and classrooms of Horizon Science Academy Toledo. The students in grades 3-8 got ready to "Rock the Test" in many ways:

  •  Our kindergarten, first, and second grade classes wrote individualized, special letters of encouragement to each of the third through fifth grade students.
  • As a show of solidarity to all of our testing students, the entire staff wore special "Keep Calm and Rock the OAA Test" t-shirts during testing days!
  • Each day, students and staff participated in the daily drawing, winning prizes such as I-Pods, bikes, Jaguar Spirit-wear, golden coins, restaurant gift cards, and an iPad.

It was easy to see, by the testing environment, how hard the students have worked to get to this point of the year.
