Student Spotlight

Sixth grade student Brionna Easley is adjusting very well to middle school. Not only does she have great grades, but is always a leader in the school. She is a involved with the dance team and is a student ambassador. She has an active imagination and uses that to entertain her little brother, Jonathan, who is a kindergarten student at HSAT. In her spare time, she likes dancing, singing, helping out at home, and playing sports with her family in their backyard. Keep up the great work, Brionna!

Staff Spotlight

Mrs. Watkins has been teaching at HSAT for two years. She teaches technology to 1st-3rd grade students and is the Project Lead the Way teacher for 7th and 8th graders. Mrs. Watkins "always tackles any task or challenge with a positive attitude. She sees it as a game or puzzle that she must solve to become better." She has taught in Ohio, North Carolina and Missouri and has a bachelor's in Business Education from BGSU and  Master's in Curriculum Instruction and Supervision from UNC-Wilmington. When she is not at school, she is spending time with her 5 year old son Seth, 2 1/2 year old daughter Samantha and husband Adam.

Teacher Professional Development

The first Toledo Region Teacher Professional Development Day of the school year took place October 18, 2013 at the Horizon Science Academy Toledo
campus.  Over 200 staff representing HSAT, HSAS, HSATD, and MMSA were in attendance, as well as the academic team from Concept schools' headquarters in Chicago.  During the course of the day, teachers participated in many break-out sessions that covered a wide-range of topics including Classroom technology resources, curriculum mapping, conflict management, and differentiation, to name a few.  In addition,
department members from each school were able to collaborate with their colleagues from other schools in the region to share best practices, plan up-coming events, analyze assessment data, and work together to further improve instructional quality.

Fundraising Drive

Horizon Science Academy is excited to be participating in a discount card fundraiser to assist in the expansion of our athletic programs. Students and staff will be selling cards containing discounts from area businesses for a two week span starting the end of November. We hope all of our HSAT families will participate in this fundraiser so we can continue spreading the Jaguar athletic pride to all K-12 students.

Parent Breakfast
One of the great moments at Horizon Science Academy is when we can show our appreciation of the parents who raise our phenomenal students. On Saturday, October 19, student ambassadors from the three area Horizon Science Academies came together at Reynolds Garden Caf to celebrate their parents and learn more about the student ambassador program.

These students, as part of our student ambassador group, are leaders in the school and demonstrate terrific qualities that will make them leaders in the community. The students shared with their parents activities they will be working on throughout the year and their desire to take a trip to Washington D.C. and talk to the President of the United States.

Horizon Science Academy appreciates the involvement of these parents in their child's life. It is evident from the type of children they are that their parents care deeply about them and their success. Education is a community effort and a partnership between parents and teachers. Thank you so much for being who you are!
 Elementary Students Visit Local Orchard
Students in grades 3 - 5 took their first field trip of the year in October! 100 students along with 18 teachers and parent volunteers visited MacQueen Orchards in Holland, Ohio. The students and adults enjoyed picking fresh apples from the orchard, touring the packing facility, and learning how apple cider is made. It was all topped off by sampling fresh cider and donuts. Both the students and the adults had a wonderful time and represented HSAT proudly.
High School Choir Sings in 2nd Annual Fall Concert

HSAT was proud to offer its 2nd annual Fall Concert on October 24th. Our two choir classes performed a diverse collection of songs ranging from American folk songs and spirituals to modern pop music. The choirs include: Teaonna Campbell, Destiny Cousins, Juan Guerrero, Deija Harris, Jacob Hodges, Steven Hoy, Mariah Jelks-McComb, Rasheida Odom, Emily Ressler, Courtney Roberson, Timaj Self, Damonique Smith, and Elyia Walls. Our next concert of the season takes place during the spaghetti dinner fundraiser on December 17th. We hope to see you there!
HSAT Rocks 80's and 90's Themed Homecoming

The HSAT 2013 Homecoming dance took place on October 26th. Students from grades 9-12 attended the 80's/90's themed dance, which lasted from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The Student Council club members and advisers worked very hard to raise money and put together an event that they hoped all in attendance would enjoy, particularly the 2013 Homecoming Court, which was led by the Senior class Queen, Kierra Sutton, and King, Alton Williams.
HSAT Pledges to Stay Drug Free

Every year schools across the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week. A week that is dedicated to spending some time in school learning about the adverse affects of drugs and alcohol. As times change, schools have adapted to Red Ribbon Week by including not only drugs and alcohol, but also decision making in general. Often times our teens and preteens come across situations that are rampant with peer pressure and bad choices.

Over the past two weeks, our social studies department and staff have spent some of their educational time talking to the students about how to make positive choices that will lead them to a successful life. Many students were willing to pledge to make positive choices this year. Miss Miller displayed those pledges on a bulletin board outside her classroom as a reminder to the students. We encourage parents to continue to discuss positive choices with their children.
Student Senate Links Students and Administration
The Student Senate is now up and running. It's purpose is to act as a link between the students and the administration to ensure that student concerns are being heard. They have made suggestion boxes that are located at the exits and the cafeteria for student suggestions. We meet twice a month and work towards making the school more student oriented through a structured and supportive process.
High School Volleyball Wins Tournament
The high school girls volleyball team finished their season 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the CSAC league. These girls and their coach, Miss Sagasser, have been working diligently since July to compete with public schools and become eligible for a public school league next year. Their hard work and dedication paid off this past Saturday, November 9th, when they topped their season with wins over Achieve and Eagle Academies to claim the CSAC league tournament title. Congratulations, ladies!
