Student Spotlight

Aldo Ibarra is a 10th grade student at HSAT. Aldo has good grades and is focused on doing well in school. As a result, he is involved in IVY League and Project Lead the Way. He was born in Mexico and moved to Toledo when he was in 4th grade. He is a Batman and Superman fanatic and loves to draw, play video games, and be on the computer during his free time. He also loves to laugh and make others laugh. Keep up the great work, Aldo!

 Staff Spotlight

This is Ms. Augustyniak's fourth year teaching at HSAT. A native of Toledo, she received two Bachelor degrees from UT in AYA Integrated Social Studies and History. In addition to teaching, Ms. Augustyniak is the high school cheerleading coach, Student Senate Advisor, and promotes social awareness. So far this year she and her students have completed projects to promote awareness about 9/11, Red Ribbon Week, and Veteran's Day. Great job, Ms. Augustyniak!

Women in Science

Thirty-one Middle School girls from Toledo area Horizon Science Academies attended the BGSU "Women in Science" event last month. This opportunity was generously provided by the BGSU alumni. Our students enjoyed learning about science careers, completing hands-on projects, and working together with BGSU staff. The event helped our students better understand the role of science in their lives.

Mayor Bell visits HSAT classrooms!

HSAT was proud to welcome Mayor Mike Bell to our building on November 19. The Mayor attended a luncheon on STEM education with several other community members while he was here. He was at the forefront in asking students questions and contributing feedback.

After the luncheon, the Mayor incited excitement as he traveled to several classrooms and interacted with the students. In Spanish class, he showed off his Spanish and he joined the gym teacher in a jump roping competition. All in all his visit brightened the students experience in class that day. Check out our YouTube account to see the Mayor in action.
Students Tour University of Toledo

Junior and senior students toured The University of Toledo on Thursday, November 21st. It was a great experience for our students to explore the colleges, facilities, and admissions office. They learned about the majors that are offered at UT, the activities they could be involved in, the requirements to be accepted into the University of Toledo, among other information. The visit ended with a delicious lunch. We look forward to to see where our students decide to attend college.

Students Demonstrate Knowledge to VIP Guests

On November 19, Horizon Science Academy Toledo opened its doors to the community in the first of a series of luncheons. This "Why" luncheon series welcomes community members to learn more about our school and provide us with feedback about current issues in education and our society at large.

All of the visitors were provided tours of the building by student ambassadors, and then escorted to the library where a luncheon from Reynold's Garden Caf was held. The community members were treated with several STEM experiments performed and explained by middle school students and a presentation by two high school students on our Project Lead the Way program. After the presentations, community members were able to ask questions and provide feedback about the importance of STEM education and how their organization may be able to help.

Thank you to Mayor Mike Bell; Lucas County director of Engineering, Keith Earley; City Council Rep, Tom Waniewski; Minority Health and Urban Educator, Larry Sykes; BGSU STEM coordinator, Dr. Bob Midden; Local Engineers, Marilyn Kocevar and Jim Thorpe for participating in our event.
Student Ambassadors Deliver Hope

Have you heard of Devin Kohlman? This 13 year old boy brought people together from all over the world. Devin's family was told that Devin's cancer treatment was not working and that his time on Earth was limited. Devin's only wish was to go home and celebrate Christmas with his family one last time. As this made the national news, our students wanted to do something for Devin and his family. The student ambassadors asked the principals if they could make a chain of hope. So every student in Horizon Science Academy made one link with a special message to Devin and his family. Unfortunately, Devin passed away, but the student ambassador's delivered the chain to the City, the Mayor and to Devin's family. The chain was hung on Devin's Christmas tree in the park across from his home.
PLTW Students tour Sauder Woodworking Factory
Project Lead the Way students in grades 7-10 had a wonderful educational field trip to Sauder Woodworking in Archbold, Ohio. Students had the opportunity to see what they are learning in a 'real world' context. Students toured a factory, viewed the design gallery, and listened to presentations about each type of engineering. They also enjoyed a delicious lunch courtesy of Sauder Woodworking. Throughout the field trip, students saw how what they are learning in class is used in the engineering industry.
HSAT Hosts Alumni Dinner

Over 40 alumni, friends and teachers gathered and celebrated HSAT's Annual Alumni Dinner in our school cafeteria on November 26, 2013. This event was a team effort. Mr. Turkmen helped at registration, where every alumni got an alumni t-shirt. Then, Mr. Can enrolled our alumni to our database and Mrs. Stewart, who is the Public Relations coordinator, welcomed our alumni and made opening remarks. We enjoyed a great dinner from Reynolds Garden Cafe. The program followed with an informational presentation about upcoming events by Mr. Gulkan, who is the Alumni Coordinator. One of the best moments was the raffle where five people received gifts! The evening concluded with a speech about graditude towards our alumni and our goals.
