AHW MINISTRIES NEWSLETTER

About His Work with Janet                         August 2016

It's The Final Countdown

As you may know, I'm currently finishing a new book I'm very excited about. I know you've heard me say that with every book . . . and it's true . . . I'm excited about every book God has me write. In fact, I decided to do an interview with myself in this month's newsletter to tell you more of why I wrote my last book  Forsaken God?: Remembering the Goodness of God Our Culture Has Forgotten. I wrote this book not knowing how acutely God would have it apply to the upcoming election and the chaos we see in our world today. If you haven't read it yet, I hope you will before the election, and tell others. It's NOT political, just a reminder of how important it is to keep God in the public square and the forefront of our lives, and what happens to a culture and way of life that forgets God and His ways.

Ok, now for the new book, tentatively titled Mentoring for All Seasons: Women Sharing Life's Experiences and God's Faithfulness. This book is for both mentors and mentees from tweens to aged and every season in between. I have amazing stories from many of you. We're in dire times, and the women in our churches need to know how to use God's Word in their lives! We who have walked with the Lord for years, must be willing to take the spiritually younger women under our wing. You've heard me say this for years, and now I'm writing a guide to help you do just that. Please pray as I finish this book to turn into the publisher by September 15th with a fall 2017 release date.

I know many of you are getting ready to start your fall mentoring ministries, and I'm excited to think about how God will work among the women of your church. Reading the stories shared in my new book, has taken me to an even higher level of conviction about God's Titus 2 command. I know you didn't think I could become more passionate about mentoring, and honestly, I didn't either . . . but I know without a doubt it's part of God's plan for revival in our nation. You could be a part of this revival by either starting a mentoring ministry or participating in the one at your church. I pray God puts it on many of your hearts to share what someone has taught you so we can train the spiritually younger women to live godly lives in an ungodly world.
"You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them. You have the authority to correct them when necessary, so don't let anyone disregard what you say. (Titus 2:15 NLT)

TALK TO US

Our  testimony this month:

Hi Janet,
I recently purchased the Woman To Woman Mentoring DVD Leader Kit and have been reading and preparing. It is so awesome to me, because our testimonies are so much alike! I accepted the call to lead our women's ministry back in November 2015 much like you did not really wanting to lead women. I felt a call several years ago to do something with the older generation but little did I know I would end up leading the women's ministry.

In the meantime God laid on my heart the need to "bridge the gap" between the younger and older members and the importance of wisdom that could be found and shared. He also put in me a longing for our older generation to feel needed and important. When I said yes to our pastor to lead the women, I quickly shared my longing with the pastor. I devised my committee and shared it with them as well. We all were praying for guidance.

I was searching on christianbook.com for some other items and ran across a book about mentoring. It caught me by surprise, so I started searching mentoring and I ran across your website and wow. I did'nt purchase that day , but I went back to the committee and mentioned it then I sat with the pastor and discussed where we were but still weren't sure how to go about it. He shared how God had been laying this kind of thing on his heart as well.

I went home and ordered your kit and when I started reading it was so amazed how everything you said was already unfolding. I am very excited and I am using your step by step process now. I am very type A and that is exactly what I needed. So thank you!
Kelli

   "GRAMMIE'S CORNER"

I've always admired Pastor Billy Graham as one of the greatest evangelist and men who ever lived, and feel blessed to have attended three of his revivals...the first one while in high school. Then I've watched his son, Franklin Graham, follow his father's example and I quote Franklin in Forsaken God? as he and I share the same concern for the spiritual downfall of our great country. This year with the upcoming election and the impact it will have on America, Franklin is going to the Capitol steps of every state in the USA and praying for the state and country. When I saw that he would be in Boise on August 10th, I told my daughter to put it on the calendar because I wanted to take her and my grandchildren to this historic event. She said the kids wouldn't know who Billy or Franklin Graham was. I said, "They will!"

And so Grampa Dave and I told them about these two great evangelists and the amazing privilege and honor of praying with Franklin at our Capitol. We all went, three generations, and I cannot adequately describe what it was like to be with 3800 Idahoans holding hands and praying for God to bless America. But the greatest joy was when Franklin asked, "Do you know Jesus as your Savior?" and my three grandchildren and daughter proudly yelled, "Yes!"

Franklin talked about Communism, the Cold War, and the falling of the Berlin Wall . . . history my grandchildren hadn't learned yet, but it opened the door for us to talk more about it on the way home. We told the kids how quickly Christians are losing the rights we've taken for granted for so many years after Communism fell. Sadly, now, my grandchildren have never known a time in school when you could pray, talk about Jesus and God freely, and carry a Bible in your backpack.

They need to know why we need revival. They need to hear stories of men like Billy and Franklin Graham. They need to know that God's not dead. They need to be part of revival and that revival needs to start with their grandparents and parents. Are you with me on this? I hope so, because we've been a generation that let our Christian rights slip away. Let's get them back for our grandchildren and their children.

Interview with Janet Thompson about her newest release,  Forsaken God?: Remembering the Goodness of God Our Culture Has Forgotten (Leafwood, February, 2016)

Why did you decide to write this book?

While having dinner with some dear friends, the conversation turned to how quickly we forget God's goodness when the next crisis arises in our life. I pointed out that we berate the Israelites for their continual forgetfulness of all God did for them, even after He parted the Red Sea and provided food and shoes that never wore out in their journey, but are we really any different today? Don't we see the amazing wonders and miracles of God in our daily lives, and yet when trouble sneaks into our life, it quickly erases our memory of God's previous amazing goodness and love. All we think about is "Where is God when we need Him?" Of course, the answer is that He's right where He's always been, at work in our lives, if we would only remember how close He stays to the troubled and brokenhearted.

How does remembering what God has done help us deal with current and future troubles?

If we don't remember what God has already done in the past, we won't believe what He is capable of doing in the future. Memory builds faith. When we take the time to look back at all the times God has been there for us, in our good and bad experiences, we remember that He never left us or deserted us, and He's not going to let us down now. He doesn't always work in the same ways and time frame we want Him to, but we can be sure He is at work in every believer's life.

What are some ways we can jog our memories to remember God's goodness?

Every chapter in Forsaken God? has a memory jogger for the reader to think back to something God has done in his or her life that maybe they have forgotten. Then there are "Ways to Remember God's Goodness" suggestions such as: taking pictures, having a thankful list, telling your testimony, looking for God in your everyday circumstances, creating a timeline of God-events in your life, ridding yourself of bad memories, learning from the past, and many more ways.

Why is there a "?" after the title?

Most people don't think they have, or ever would, forsake God, and no one does it intentionally...it just seems to happen over time that God takes a lesser place in the life of many Christians. So instead of dogmatically saying Christians are forsaking and forgetting God, I hope to gently start the thought process: Is it possible that I have forsaken God without realizing it? Is God truly first place in my life? Would anyone know it? Am I standing up for God and His truth in a culture that is quickly forgetting and abandoning God? Am I willing to be bold for God, even when it's not popular or politically correct?

Since mentoring is your passion, how will    Forsaken God?: Remembering the Goodness of God Our Culture Has Forgotten help influence the next generation?

Forsaken God? has a section titled Generation to Generation where I challenge Christians to pass on their faith to the upcoming generations, reminding them why we believe what we believe. And we must speak to them and reach out to them where they're at, in a language they understand, and be willing to discuss the issues they face in today's culture. We can't be afraid to talk about difficult or uncomfortable topics. They need to not only know how Christians should react to today's culture, but they need to see their parents, church leaders, grandparents, mentors, youth workers, and influencers living out their biblical faith-not the pseudo faith of much of today's culture. They need help in discerning God's truth from Satan's lies.

What would you say to someone who has experienced great loss and pain?

I would say that God has not forsaken you so don't forsake Him when you need Him most. He's the only true source of love and faithfulness in your life and He's the lifeline that won't let you sink into your sorrows, even when you think that's what you want to do. Read the Psalms, play praise music at home and in the car . . . listen to the lyrics and start singing along. Pray continually, and trust and believe that God always answers, sometimes in a still small voice. Look for Him in every circumstance; He's there waiting to rescue you and give you a testimony of His great goodness and faithfulness.

Absolutely! There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter for use in small groups, Bible studies, and book clubs. My own churches Women's Bible study is reading  Forsaken God? as their summer Bible study.

Forsaken God? is available at all Christian bookstores and online stores such as Amazon,  Christianbook.com, and Barnes & Noble. It's also available signed at my website.
