The Chilean Flag
You see this national symbol EVERYWHERE!...From the most remote mountain top, to a busy city newstand, to a burned-down foundation on the hills surrounding Valparaiso. Chileans are very committed and proud of their country.
The blue represents the sky. The white is the snow on the Andes mountains. The red represents the blood shed for freedom. The white star stands for the power of the government.

Prayer Requests

* Pray for Liisa's family as they mourn the passing of her uncle Rev. James Keurulainen on October 29. Unfortunately, Liisa and Jim will not be able to attend the funeral due to distance, time, and cost.
* Pray for our children back in Florida and Arizona as they study, work, and make decisions as young adults with their parents FAR AWAY!! Both Ben and Nika ended up in the emergency room during October (unrelated accidents). Nothing too serious, thank God!
* Thank God for those who have been housing us during our initial weeks in Chile: Pastor Cristian Rautenberg and family; and church members Fabricio & Maria Laura. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming. We have been richly blessed!
* Praise God that we have found an apartment to rent close to the church. Pray for us as we make purchases and settle into our new home. Pray that the rest of our move - mainly BOOKS - arrives safely this month by boat.
* Pray for our visas to be processed - the first step is our "temporary visa" which is good for 1 year.
* Thank God for the 9 volunteers from Christ Memorial and St. John in the St. Louis area who came to share in the Chile mission. Many relationships were built that will continue to bless brothers & sisters in the USA & Chile.
* Praise God for a dynamic National Children's Gathering hosted by our small congregation in Santiago. Around 80 children and youth - plus adult chaperones - participated!
* Pray for Jim & Pastor Cristian as they host and help lead a conference on Disaster Relief
next week to
30 young men coming from the Seminary in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The conference will be held in Valparaiso, site of the destructive April 2014 wildfires.

One thing that impresses visitors to Chile is the abundance of "million-dollar views". From breath-taking views of the Andes mountains to endless vistas of the Pacific coastline, Chile is unquestionably scenic. These "million-dollar" views are not limited to the people who have a million dollars, though. Nearly everyone, from the most humble to the most wealthy, enjoys some kind of spectacular view right from their home. Still, all this natural beauty is but a tiny foretaste of what God has prepared for us in heaven! Join us in praying that more and more Chileans would come to "enjoy the view" from eternity!

Jumping in!
October was a busy month! We arrived early in the morning of Oct 7th, and spent the next several days looking for housing, setting up banking, internet, cell phones, and so on. Since pastor Cristian was out of town our first weekend, Jim preached and led services at both congregations in Santiago our first Sunday here (Oct 12). After that, the fun began!

OCT 18TH: CHILDREN'S GATHERING
Over 120 kids, youth and adults from six congre- gations in Chile joined in a day of fun, fellowship and learning in Santiago. The theme was being on an adventure of faith where Jesus is our Savior and Guide. It was hosted by our small mission church in Santiago, at a nearby community center, which we decorated the day before with jungle and "Easter Island" dcor. Liisa was even given the privilege of writing the theme song! To add to the excitement, a group of 9 short-term missionary volunteers from the USA arrived to share in the day as well.

OCTOBER 19TH: INSTALLATION
All of the pastors of the Confessional Lutheran Church of Chile
To celebrate Jim's installation as Pastor/missionary at mission La Florida in Santiago, members from the various congregations were invited to remain in Santiago after the Children's Encuentro. What a marvelous day! Traditional Lutheran liturgy with melodies and rhythms reflecting the Chilean culture, 7 Pastors, including Rev. David Vaughn from the visiting volunteer group from St. Louis, and a special choir who sang both in Spanish and English! It was a very moving day as God confirmed to us over and over again that this is the right place and the right time for us to be serving Him with our gifts.

OCT 18 - 25: VOLUNTEERS FROM USA
Home visits
The group of 9 from the St. Louis area didn't know exactly what they were getting themselves into!! During their time here they learned enough basic Spanish to hand out pamphlets and share the love of Jesus with people at local health clinics and on a street corner near the church. They visited classrooms at a Lutheran school and witnessed their faith to the students in English classes.

We travelled about 2 hours to Valparaiso where wildfires in April had destroyed about 3000 homes on "Los Cerros". They visited contacts that the church has made through their acts of mercy. We heard the families' stories, saw the destruction and rebuilding, prayed with them and gave Bible materials. It was fun to translate and get to know both brothers & sisters from the USA and Chile! Through worship, Bible Study, and prayer we have developed relationships that the Lord will surely bless and prosper! |
FINANCIAL SUPPORT UPDATE
We know that many of you have been praying for our support, and we cannot thank you enough! Mission work is TEAM work, and you are our team! Keep on praying - we still have a long ways to go!

When we deployed in early October, God had provided through you 100% of our outgoing expenses, and 56% of our first year expenses. We are grateful and overwhelmed!
What does this mean for the future? It means that if we receive everything that has been pledged over the next 12 months, we will have 56% of what we need for our first year.
So you see, there is still a lot of praying to do! Join us in asking the Lord of the Harvest to continue to raise up partners for our ministry in Chile.
PARTNER UPDATE: As of October 31, we are blessed to have 25 monthly Partners in Ministry! Remember that if
you pledge $25 per month or more to this ministry, we will send you a FREE copy of Jim's book, "Meeting Ananias". (Click here to read about the book!)
