Quick Fact
Iquique - April 2014 earthquake.

Chile is located in the so-called "Ring of Fire", the region of the world with the most earthquakes and active volcanos. Chile has recorded at least 120 major earthquakes in her history (not including aftershocks), including the 8.2 magnitude that struck Iquique in April 2014. As a point of comparison, the historic San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was 7.8 magnitude. One of the Iquique aftershocks was 7.7 magnitude.

Prayer Requests

1. Join us in THANKING GOD for safe travels over the summer as we visited congregations in New England, California, and Michigan!

2. PRAISE GOD for times of rest and refreshment in your life.

3. Liisa requests prayers for Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church and School. Liisa has been teacher and music director there for the past two years. We pray for Beth Albrecht, the new music teacher and director, and for Rev. Steven Reynolds, their new pastor. May the Lord bless the congregation and school as they use their many gifts in His service!

4. Jim asks prayer for Brent Friedrichs - Brent began serving in his new role of "Director of Missionary Support" for Global Lutheran Outreach on August 1.

5. Pray for daughter Sonrisa and fiancee Ty as they finalize plans for their wedding on September 20th! They will be getting married in Athens, GA and then living in our house in Miramar, FL.

6. Nika requests prayers for God's guidance as she makes a decision on where to go for graduate school. She wants to become a chiropractor, but the costs are extremely prohibitive.

7. Pray for God to enable us to do all we need to do ahead of our October 1 departure date! Packing, sorting, and preparing for an international move can get overwhelming.

8. Praise God that we have a new website for Global Lutheran Outreach! It really brings you closer to our missionaries.

9. PRAY FOR ALL our GLO missionaries who are in the "Support Discovery" process: Tim & Beth Heiney (Guinea); George & Shary Frahm (Cambodia); and Dixon & Christiana Gbeanquoi (Tanzania); Sharon Whightsil (Kenya); and Sarah Burr (Paraguay).

Ahh, the Sweet Days of Summer! As I write this, we are enjoying a few days of vacation in Michigan with the Tino side of the family. There is nothing quite like a Michigan summer - long, warm days, cool nights, and the seeming endlessness of it all. Sometimes I think, "if people only knew what it was like, everyone would go to Michigan in the summer." Not everyone can go to Michigan in the summer, but an 'endless summer' in heaven is offered to all! "If they only knew...". Together, we can help tell the people of Chile of the promised future that we have in Jesus Christ!

What will we be doing in Chile?

One of the truths that we have learned throughout our years of missionary service is this: "Things on the mission field are never quite the way you thought they would be." At this point, 50 days before our deployment to Chile, we are very open to seeing how the Lord will lead us and how He plans to use us. Regardless of how our ministry unfolds, I am quite certain we will find ourselves saying, "This isn't what I expected!"

That said, we do have a basic plan in place. At this time, Argentinian pastor and missionary Rev. Cristian Rautenberg is leading two small mission congregations in Santiago, which are known by their location in the city: "La Florida" and "Puente Alto".
Jim, Liisa and Pastor Cristian with some of the members of the Puente Alto congregation, Santiago.
Each congregation is renting a small house which they use for worship and other activities. The plan is for Cristian and I to work together in order to obtain land and a suitable building so that those two mission congregations can be combined into one stronger congregation. Once that happens, the idea is that we will begin planting another church in an area of Santiago known as "Maipu".  The original 'combined' congregation has already pledged to support the new mission with the money that they will save by not having to rent facilities!

COUNTDOWN TO CHILE - 50 DAYS!!!
The time is drawing near! We are busy doing all of the things that need to be done for an international move - not just sorting, packing, and getting rid of stuff, but also closing accounts, paying off bills, and making sure we will have access to things like bank accounts and credit card statements.
As of July 31, we are at 52% of our total funding target, thanks to YOUR gifts and pledges to our ministry! Or goal is to reach the 75% mark by October 1. (To be deployed, we need to raise 100% of our 'outgoing' costs, and 60% of our 'ongoing' costs. Ongoing costs are what it takes to maintain our ministry in Santiago for one year.)

We are also delighted to announce that we now have 17 monthly Partners in Ministry! Remember that if you pledge $25 per month or more to this ministry, we will send you a FREE copy of Jim's book, "Meeting Ananias". (Click here to read about the book!)
This non-profit publication is a collection of 10 stories from our ministry in Venezuela. Former Lutheran Hour speaker Dale Meyer wrote the foreword!  We are praying for 40 monthly partners. Is God calling you to partner with us in this ministry?  Click here to make a pledge!

We still have a few "open dates" before our planned deployment to Chile on October 1. If your small group or congregation is open to it, we would be happy to visit!  PLEASE NOTE that we are NOT asking to be included in your congregation's budget. As we share what God is doing, we know that those whom the Spirit moves, will partner with us in this ministry. If one of our "dates" is near you, we hope that you will stop by for a visit!

Will you consider inviting us for one of the OPEN DATES?  If so, contact Jim by email to make arrangements: [email protected]
