Foro?

A "Foro" is the term used by LCMS missions in Latin America to describe a way of partnering together. The Chile "Foro" is a mission round-table, where committed partners meet twice each year to learn about God's mission in Chile, and to determine how and where their gifts (spiritual and financial) might best be utilized. In our May Foro, we were pleased to welcome the North Dakota District of the LCMS as a partner for God's work in Chile!

Prayer Requests

* Thank the Lord with us that Natanael Rautenberg, our coworkers' son, is recovering successfully from surgery to correct a birth defect in his legs.  Hopefully, next month he will be able to start the physical therapy.  Keep praying for his "good attitude" and strength for his parents as they care for him.

* Join us in thanking God for our daughter Sonrisa's graduation from college! Pray that the Lord would bless her teaching ministry.

* Pray for all the details of the land purchase for our new ministry center in Santiago.  We have the keys and our sign up on the property, but the final legal papers are very complicated.

* Give thanks with us for a wonderful visit of our son, Ben, to our Chilean home!

* Pray for God's blessings on our travels to visit congregations in the USA in June and time for R&R with the family.

* Pray for Carlos, a new "inquirer" who has been attending worship with us the past few weeks, that the Spirit of God would work saving faith in his heart through the Word of God.

* We thank God for the support and interest from many brothers in sisters from LCMS organizations such as the Lutheran Hour, MOST Ministries and North Dakota district in God's mission in Chile.

The readings for Pentecost Sunday got me thinking about dry bones. "Can these dry bones live?", the Lord asked the prophet Ezekiel(Ez. 37:3). The answer would be, "no". Dry bones are the epitomy of death; the opposite of life. Anti-life. But the real question was not about bones - it was about Ezekiel. The question behind the question was this: "Are you under-estimating God?" Ezekiel knew that dry bones cannot live, yet he did not want to under-estimate God. "Lord, you know", Ezekiel wisely responded.

What is it that will make a difference in the lives of the people around you, or in Chile? We think we know the kinds of things that God will use; the gifts we will employ for His glory; the things that we could say that will make an impact and bring life to dry bones. But again and again, I find myself underestimating God. Look at what He is doing through handbells in Santiago! Completely unexpected. "Lord, you know."

There's someone I want you to meet...
It's always fun to introduce people to a new friend. That's just what we're doing at Mission Santiago in a class we offer called, "Hacia Una Nueva Vida" ("Towards a New Life").  For the last 3 weeks Jim has been leading a group of contacts from our local  Lutheran Hour office in  this introductory Bible course. It is a time of questions and lively discussion as we share the Good News of Jesus  and see spiritual "dry bones" coming to new life in Christ!

Mother's Day Breakfast
Another great outreach opportunity was our Mother's Day worship and "breakfast". Pray for the people reached that they would grow in their faith, and as our mission congregation grows as well.

That's what I'm beginning to think we should call the set of handbells we brought down from a church in Ft. Lauderdale  when we moved to Santiago. Chileans have NEVER heard of handbells before and are absolutely enamored with the music! The beginning handbell choir at our mission has  several musicians in it who already read music, but the rest are learning something very new. We have a repertoire of about five pieces, but every time we play, we get rave reviews - even in spite of the obvious "clunkers" we all hit!! Martin Luther said it well: "Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us." Already we can see new souls entering our church because they are attracted to the beautiful sound of the handbell choir!
Look what Soni did!
We are so proud of our oldest daughter, Sonrisa, who graduated from Florida International University in May! Last Fall, Soni started teaching part-time at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran School in Ft. Lauderdale. After Christmas, the eighth grade teacher resigned, and so Soni was asked to fill in as a full time teacher. She plans to continue teaching at Shepherd of the Coast next year (eighth grade), and is well on her way to being fully certified by the State of Florida. Notes of congratulations can be sent to her at:

Congrats, Soni!
Will we see you?
We are back in the States from May 26 - June 23, and building partnerships and re-connecting with our family is our personal "theme"! Our plan is to be with our children, visit family in Michigan, and build mission partnerships. As we reported in our last newsletter, our financial "reserve" is at 3 months, which is the absolute minimum recommended by Global Lutheran Outreach. Our congregational visits will be an important time to connect with the people God has already chosen to be partners with us in His mission to Santiago!

Here is the schedule of where Jim will be preaching. If we will be in a congregation near you, PLEASE plan to stop by if you are able! We would love to see you in person!

May 31 - St. Paul Lutheran Church, Weston, FL. Worship at 8:30 and 11:00, mission presentation at 9:45.

June 7 - Christ Church Lutheran, Phoenix, AZ. Worship at 8:00, 8:30, 10:30 and 10:45. Mission presentation at 9:40. Spanish language worship at 12:30.
