Quick Fact

Iguazu Falls

After the Youth Gathering in Argentina (see story), we visited Iguazu Falls. Iguazu Falls is located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, within a stone's throw of Paraguay. It is the location of the historical events which were portrayed in the movie, "The Mission". Iguazu is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List of places to visit.

 Iguazu Falls...

...it is 2X as wide as Niagra Falls

...consists of 275 falls along 1.7 miles of the Igauzu River

...2/3 of the falls are in Argentina, the other 1/3 are in Brazil

...has the greatest annual flow of any waterfall in the world, more than three times that of Niagra.  ... Eleanor Roosevelt, when she first saw Iguazu Falls, exclaimed, "Poor Niagra"!

Prayer Requests

*  Praise God for the people in Santiago who are starting New Member instruction! Pray for Armando,Mandy, Elizabeth, and Cristian.

*   Praise God that our daughter Gabriela and Daniel are engaged to be married! Wedding bells are ringing for the end of 2015.

*  Pray for Liisa's parents. Ed was recently diagnosed with prostrate cancer, and Shirley underwent surgery in February. Pray for healing!

*  Join us in thanking God that Liisa had the opportunity to visit her parents in February! We thank the Lord for opening up this door for her.

 *  Praise God for a great conference of the Association of Lutheran Mission Agencies in St.Louis in January. Jim is the president of that organization.

* Pray for our visas to be processed - the first step is our "temporary visa" which is good for 1 year. They should have been ready for us long ago! We hope to obtain the visas in February.

* Pray for Jim as he teaches a seminary-level class on Urban Mission at the Lutheran seminary in Brazil next week. Pray also for the students, that they would learn and apply what they have learned, for the glory of God!

Ahh, the sweet sounds of summer! Children laughing and playing outside, splashing in the pool; couples taking evening walks; people visiting on the porch as the twilight extends until 9:00 or even 10:00 pm; planning the family vacation.

Have I lost my mind? No - January and February are the summer vacation months in Chile! Most people manage to take a vacation for a week or two or even three. Church activities are on "summer schedule" as people refresh and re-group! We are using our Chilean summer to get our visas; to visit church members and friends; and to begin planning for the next phase of evangelism and church planting in Santiago! Thanks for your PRAYERS and PARTNERSHIP in the Gospel!

 Youth Gathering in Argentina

"Then sings my soul,  my Savior God to Thee, how great Thou art..."

In January we were blessed with the opportunity to travel by van over the Andes mountains, through the beautiful Argentine country-side, to an international youth gathering in the province of "Misiones", in the northeast corner of Argentina.   We were snapping pictures a-mile-a-minute of canyons and rivers,  peaks and valleys, toucans and coati...God's creation is full of endless wonders! Our 10 Chilean youth joined 900 other Lutherans  as we connected to Christ and to each other.  We all were challenged to broadcast the news of our Awesome God using whatever talents He has given us.

Opening ceremony - Youth Gathering, Argentina

Jim participated in a workshop on radio ministry.   After helping small groups of  youth develop their presentations, he accompanied them to a local radio station where they experienced  sharing Christ LIVE on air!

Liisa assisted in a workshop for beginning instrumentalists.  She was also blessed to play cuatro in the closing service with a variety of talented youth on their accordions, flutes, violins, saxophones, guitars and even charango (Andean 10 string instrument)!

A Pastor in the Making!
Marcelo, Amanda, and wife Vania
One essential part of church planting is raising up national pastors.  We are so happy that Marcelo has answered God's call to do just this! In February, Marcelo and his family will be moving to Argentina to study at the seminary there. In order to prepare them for the challenges of living and working in a different country, culture, and context, Jim met with Marcelo and Vania for two days of preparation in January. They also met with a psychologist from our congregation in Santiago, Mandy. Please pray for Marcelo and his wife, Vania, as they move to Buenos Aires, Argentina to study at the seminary.  Pray that God will mold him into a Christ-like leader for the Lutheran Church of Chile!

Looking Ahead to Outreach in 2015!
If you did not know this already, the Lutheran Hour is a valued and special partner in our church planting ministry in Santiago, and throughout Chile. Called Cristo Para Todas Las Naciones in Spanish (Christ for all the Nations), the Lutheran Hour has their Santiago office right in our church! We work together to design and implement new and creative evangelism and outreach strategies and programs. Jim has been participating in three active outreach programs: 1) radio ministry; 2) offering materials and counseling at a public health clinic; and 3) mini-conferences at the church/CPTLN office. As we begin a new year of ministry, Jim and pastor Christian will be strategizing with Marianela, the Santiago Lutheran Hour director, as to how best to utilize all of our resources to reach more and more people with the Gospel!
