Katallasso Provider Spotlight

Susan Kurz,
has been serving here at Katallasso doing an excellent job.  Susan has been in private practice for nearly 32 years serving in Southern York County as a family practitioner.  She received her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and attended medical school at Temple University Medical School.  Susan has been married to her husband Richard for 33 years and is the proud mother of 3 grown children.

Thank you so much Susan for helping Katallasso to reach beyond healthcare!

Volunteer of the Quarter

Walter Car
has been doing an absolutely outstanding job here at Katallasso working with us in developing policies and procedures.  Walter has been working in this field of document management for over 35 years in the industrial and pharmaceutical sectors for various companies.  We are so appreciative of the way that Walter handles this task as it is not an easy one.  He is very patient with us and gives great guidance in a very professional manner.  He is a GREAT example of the fact that you do not have to be talented medically to volunteer at Katallasso.
Thank you Walter for using your talents and training in the service of God at Katallasso!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
York Alliance Church

This group from York Alliance Church came to Katallasso and spent a Saturday detail cleaning Katallasso inside and out.  They also helped us to develop a spreadsheet to track patient visits and volunteer hours.

Thank you so much April, Christine, Jess and Rick for helping us to reach beyond healthcare!

WOW!!!  Katallasso Family Health Center is approaching 1000 visits.  What a big number!!  Keep your eyes peeled for media coverage of this huge milestone.  Tons more going on at the center.  Read on...

Impact of the Quarter

Several months ago a woman came to the center in search of a primary care provider. She is a mother of two children 19 and 20. She has spent the past several years in what she described as a difficult and challenging season in her life as she tried to provide for her family. She works a full time job and a part time job in an attempt to provide for her and the children. During this season, she has not been able to afford health insurance and therefore has not been able to appropriately care for her high blood pressure and other health concerns.

A friend of hers had mentioned to her about Katallasso as a start in the hopes of taking the steps to regain control of her health. At her first visit, she was just amazed that there was a place she could come without insurance and get quality care and be loved as she was that first moment she came through the doors! Her blood pressure has since come
under control, she has been seen for her annual women's health check ups and is able to get low cost medications to continue on treatment.
Six weeks ago, she brought her children into the clinic for a drivers permit exam and a general check up. She was brought to tears at the end of the time with her children. When asked if she was alright she simply said, thank you for showing love and caring for my children. She went on to say that she feels like the volunteers at Katallasso are like family to her; helping her, loving her and walking through life with her giving her hope and restoring her faith!
Putting faith into action...changing and impacting lives.

That's Kat impact!
Physical Therapy Program?
Injuries - sports running knee injury on man. Male runner with pain, maybe from sprain knee. Close up of legs, muscle and knee outdoors.
Recently Katallasso made an addition to our Orthopedic program led by Dr. Nick Pandelidis thanks to the willing servant hearts of Physical Therapists Betty Anne Abrahamson, Sharon Muff and Linda Topper.  What a great addition to the already fantastic services at Katallasso.  After being referred by Dr. Nick our Physical Therapists will take over care in order to get our patients physical condition manageable and on the way to recovery.
Just another way Katallasso is working to build relationships.
Katallasso Patients Give Back?
(from the desk of Medical Director Duane Furman)
As I look back over the past 18 months and see how International business team showing unity with their hands together patients have been cared for, received quality health care in their time of need and have experienced the love of Christ, I can't help but be moved by the response of the patients. The vast majority of them have been unable to give in return for their care received. Some are able to give a few dollars in the donation box as they leave, but many are not able.

There are three distinct individuals that come to mind. The first is a woman who was struck by an automobile  sustaining head trauma which has made it difficult for her to focus for long periods of time. That incident had a negative impact on her other health issues making it difficult for her to receive care. Out of her gratefulness for the care she received, she volunteered stuffing envelopes for mailers and assisting staff with literature. The second was a man  that struggled keeping a job due to his health. But he had skills as a handyman. After one of his visits to the clinic, he noticed the door in the waiting room had a nasty squeak. He humbly went to his car and returned with his tools. In minutes he removed and reset the door resolving the issue. Lastly, was the young man with general diabetic health issues with a heart of gratitude for the care he received. So much that after his routine visit, he pulled a bag of rice out of his back pack and asked if he could leave it as a donation stating, "somebody else may need this today more than I do."

Three people applying our mission of sharing the love of Christ, without knowing the impact. Three people that are reaching beyond healthcare after being reached beyond healthcare. How can you share that same love of Christ to the community we serve and join us in reaching beyond healthcare?
Katallasso hosting groups for meetings and events...

Katallasso opens it's doors to faith based and civic groups several times per year.  This gives them a place to meet outside their normal routine and also gives them a taste of what Katallasso is all about.  In fact we recently hosted the Aldersgate Women in Ministry who learned a lot about urban ministry and Katallasso.  We even held a Bunco party for a local Bunco club.  Wow, what an evening!  Executive Director Brian received the honor of an award...lowest score!  We have done these types of things numerous times since we have been open and have met many, many people who are intrigued and motivated by the mission of Katallasso.

Do you belong to a faith based or civil group that would like to come use Katallasso for a one time meeting?  We supply the snacks and the meeting place, you provide the people.  Please just give us a call to make arrangements.
Brian's Bits
(this section has been created to give you a picture of where this vision came from and will be a recurring section until the story is told)

In our last issue I wrote about some examples of how we working to be a catalyst to pull churches together using Katallasso as the platform.  I wrote that we did this through the formation of a construction committee and throughout the construction process and the work crews.
This edition I thought I would focus on some miracles
that I watched happen before my eyes and I have to say....there were so many that involved so many people!
I remember when the drywall job had been completed on a Thursday afternoon.  I had a fairly large paint crew coming in to splash the colors on the walls in two Saturdays.  But it hit me....my goodness, these walls need primed, and it was a lot of walls!  I had no one to do it, especially on such short notice, after so many people had already sacrificed greatly.  I prayed and prayed and that Sunday at church I announced to our Sunday school class the dilemma.  Someone walked up to me after class and gave me a slip of paper with a name and phone number on it with the suggestion that I call this person.  I called them and they cam to the center on Monday.  Well, this turned out to be an 83 year old man (I know his humility would not allow me to write his name) about 5 foot 6.  I have to say I was a little hesitant but I had to ask myself why God would send this guy if he wasn't THE guy.  So he took the job and started the next day with another volunteer that we provided.  You should have seen this guy climbing the scaffolding and spraying away.  I guarantee his agility put me to shame!  Katallasso was completely primed in 2.5 days ready for paint rollers.  It was unbelievable what God had done.
One More...I will never forget sitting in my office 1 month before we were to open looking at a construction bill of $78,000 with $400 in the bank and no real prospects.  You know where this is going, right?  By the end of that month (December) we were able to write a check for $40,000 to cut that number in half.  WHAT!
These are just 2 of the many stories I could tell that gave us clear indication that what we were doing was deep within the will of God.  What in the world was I worried about?  He had it the whole time.

How can you be part of Katallasso?
