The Changing Face of Transportation

   

 

Hello KYSITE! 

     

Over the past few years, the bourbon industry in Kentucky has skyrocketed and the offerings / varieties have grown exponentially (or that seems to be the case).  

 

Have you taken a tour on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail yet? If not, next Thursday is your chance to knock Woodford Reserve off the list.  It's not an option -- it's a requirement if you live in the Commonwealth. 

 

Bourbon Requirements (some trivia for your friends):

 

- Produced in the United States

- Made from a grain mixture that isat least 51% corn

- Aged in new, charred-oak barrels

- Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)

- Enter the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume)

- Be bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume).

 

Drink responsibly and we'll see you next Thursday!

Today (if you're reading this on Thursday) is the deadline to  register for this year's Annual Meeting and Silent Auction.  As previously noted, it will be held on Thursday, November 14.  The location will be Woodford Reserve Distillery.
  
A tour of the distillery will begin at 5:00 PM with the meeting starting at 6:00 PM.

SDITE 2014 Annual Meeting - Call for Abstracts
    

The Georgia Section of ITE is currently accepting abstracts for the 2014 Southern District ITE Annual Meeting to be held March 30 - April 2, 2014 at Reynolds Plantation in Lake Oconee, GA. Presenting at the 2014 SDITE Annual Meeting is a great opportunity to share your ideas, knowledge, expertise, and innovations with your peers.

 

We are working to develop an interesting and diverse technical program and will consider presentations addressing topics of interest to our members. Some suggested topics are listed below:

  • Congestion Pricing
  • Managed Lanes - HOV/HOT Lanes
  • Transportation and Land Use Policies
  • Safety
  • Pedestrian/Bicycle Planning and Design
  • Transit Planning, Design, and Operations
  • Parking Operations and Management
  • Managing Transportation in Challenging Economic Times
  • Traffic Signals, Traffic Operations and Management
  • Travel Models and Microsimulation
  • Training and Mentoring the Next Generation 

Student Paper Presentations are highly encouraged.

 

Abstracts should contain the following information: 

  • Title of presentation
  • Brief abstract/summary explaining the presentation (250 words or less)
  • Preferred presentation format (e.g., presentation, poster, workshop, etc.)
  • Name and contact information of presenter

Please submit your abstract in PDF format via email by January 15, 2014 to [email protected].

A New Tool To Catch Distracted Drivers

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has recently adopted a new technique to catch distracted drivers. THP has deployed a Semi truck as a police officer. Being higher up enables the officer to be able to see into to cars to catch people texting. Even though it has lights and THP markings most people fail to realize it's the police when they pull up beside one. To read more, click here.

Since it opened in 1883, after 13 years of construction, the Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of New York City and is often featured in the backdrop of movies ranging from 1971's The French Connection to 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. 

For most Americans, New York's Brooklyn Bridge - like San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge - is one of those iconic landmarks that requires no introduction. It's been a national historic landmark since 1964 and featured in countless books and movies, and every day thousands of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists cross it into and out of Manhattan.

 

Less well known today, perhaps, is the challenge its engineers faced during its construction back in the 1870s and 1880s, when many similar bridges collapsed after sometimes only several years of use. Nearly 30 people died during the 13-year-long construction, including its original architect John A. Roebling.

 

In 1884, a year after the bridge opened, P.T. Barnum helped to ease the public's fear about the bridge's sturdiness when he led a parade of his prized circus elephants over its nearly 6,000-ft-long span.
