Over 2,600 volunteers helped pack an amazing 776,952 meals for Haiti at Luther Automotive Group's "Drive to Serve" event on February 24th and 25th in Plymouth, Minnesota, exceeding the goal of 750,000 meals.

Volunteers for this two day pack included Luther employees, Kids Against Hunger staff, civic groups, and community members. The event was organized by Luther Automotive Group.

"We reached our 750,000 meal goal about 7:00 Saturday night! It was an exhausting but amazing weekend of hard work, lots of laughter and the joy of accomplishing something good together! Thanks to everyone who helped!" Barbara Hilbert, CFO Luther Automotive Group.

The partnership between Kids Against Hunger and Luther will help to feed many Haitian children. This is the second year the two organizations have worked together.

The event also raised over $30,000 in contributions for the Emergency Foodshelf Network to support local food needs and the Veteran's Airlift Command in Minnesota.
1 in 4 of the World's Children are Malnourished

According to a rAfrica famine boyecent report from Save the Children, 1 in 4 children globally are malnourished. Another 1/2 billion are at risk of permanent damage due to hunger related causes over the next 15 years.

"Malnutrition is a largely hidden crisis, but it afflicts 1 in 4 children around the world. It wreaks lifelong damage and is a major killer of children. Every hour of every day, 300 children die from malnutrition," said Carolyn Miles, CEO of Save the Children.

According to Miles, the United States has shown great leadership on nutrition but must call on other nations to make it a global priority.

The report says that the world has been largely focused on economic issues, but long term malnutrition is affecting the economy by destroying the potential of millions of children.

Flying a Bus full of food to Haiti

The U.S. Air Force is teaming up with Kids Against Hunger to fly a bus load of highly nutritious volunteer packaged meals to Haiti.

600,000 meals plus the bus itself will be loaded onto a U.S. Air Force cargo plane and flown to Haiti to help the youth of the poverty-stricken country.

The president of Children's Lifeline...another group working on this mission....will be cooking and hand-delivering those meals in Haiti. Children's Lifeline feeds 8,300 children in Haiti Kids Against Hunger meals through their school nutrition program.

Children's Lifeline president Donald Curtis says, "Haiti is the worst place I've ever worked as far as the conditions, however the spirit and the attitude of the people are amazing. They're survivors and it's a blessing to even work with them."

The Hunger Games

Everyone is talking about the new movie "The Hunger Games" which opens nationally this weekend. The fictional movie is set in the future and is about the dark, oppressive, and violent reality that the story's characters face every day. Unfortunately, the reality of the present for hungry children is just as scary.

A child dies every six seconds from hunger related causes. 1,420 children will die from hunger related causes in the time it takes to watch "The Hunger Games".

Millions of children and adults in the United States and around the world face real hunger issues every day. According to the World Hunger Education Service, there were an estimated 925 million hungry people in the world in 2010, or 1 in 7 of the world's population. As poverty levels rise, this numbers will only continue to grow.

Kids Against Hunger has the cure to stop these deaths in our highly nutritious volunteer packaged meals. The average volunteer can package enough meals to feed a child for a year in the time it takes to watch "The Hunger Games".

Taking the time to talk to your friends and family about hunger and its devastating effects will bring awareness to the issue and help to find solutions. While you are waiting in line to buy your tickets this weekend, start the conversation about hunger. Your dedication to the issue can help save lives.
