BARRY "HEPTONE" LLEWELLYN
"A Lasting Impression"
by Francine Chin
I was on my way out of Kingston last week when I heard the news! Barry "Heptone" Llewellyn was on the island visiting, got ill and passed away at The Kingston Public Hospital. This and today's (Sunday, December 4, 2011) news of the death of Reggae Producer, Phillip "Fattis" Burrell -Xterminator Label - has not thrown me into mourning but rather, in a deeply reflective mode.
In 1996 (or thereabouts), I was the host of 105.9 FM's "Caribbean Blend": then, the most listened to Reggae show in New York City. Not only would other jocks from stations like Hot 97 randomly pop in, our studio was also a revolving door for promoters and performers in The Metro New York Area. It was always my honor to welcome the likes of Ken Boothe, Judy Mowatt, Bunny Rugs and other Reggae elites. Thus, my encounter with The "Mighty" Heptones!
For radio jocks to also promote was also a norm and I just had to try my hand at this. I loved and was emotionally connected to the music. My preference to "tell the story" led me to showcase the architects of our rich legacy. Michael Cacia - Toot's present manager- facilitated the opportunity. He got us "The Heptones" and that April, singer, Robert Ffrench and I jointly produced "The Heptones Showcase" at the popular Nakisaki nightclub on Long Island.
That night, it was a "wall-to-wall" crowd that awaited the arrival of Leroy Sibbles, Barry Llewellyn and Earl Morgan. The extensive delay turned from excited anticipation to anxious trepidation for me. Something was wrong! But a few minutes before 1:00 a.m. I hugged all three upon their arrival. I still recognized that all was not well but like the true professionals they are, The Heptones gave a smashing performance that night and much to the delight of the appreciative patrons.
It was after the show, that I concluded that the problem might have been one of a fiscal nature between them and their representative. Even though I never ventured to delve - as I had long honored my part of the agreement - my appreciation for Barry, Leroy and Earl grew a thousand fold that early Saturday morning. Despite the crowd, we had made no money after expenses. I was forced to empathize with theirs and the struggles that so many musicians must have experienced in the early days of the building of the institution of Rock Steady and Reggae.
Then, most artistes worked for art's sake. There were disappointments but the stories to be told and the messages to be delivered took precedence. Studio One, Federal Records, Duke Reid and Chin Randy's were among the producers who provided the tools. At times, that was it! The remuneration was slow in coming - or very often, not at all -. Yet these unflinching architects and music warriors unabatedly drenched us with their songs of freedom, love and pride.
The Heptones were no different! Before being signed to Island Records, Barry Llewellyn and Earl Morgan came together as "The Hep Ones". From the risqu "Fattie Fattie (Fat Girl Tonight)" to "Party Time" and a plethora of other recordings, they kept us dancing and quickly evolved into one of Reggae's most prolific and beloved exponents. While Leroy maintained his role as lead vocalist for the most part, it wasn't until the release of "Book of Rules" that we saw the full extent of Barry 's talent. Yet, even with such a massive success he seamlessly eased himself back into his role as a harmonizer.
Back to that night in 1996! I left with the impression that "The Heptones" as a group were the consummate professionals! Whatever the problem was, I remained ignorant. The show that "went on" was all that mattered and it was beautiful. I also concluded that while each of these stalwarts were massive talents, Leroy Sibbles was the life and main voice of the trio and Earl its essential anchor. However, it was Barry who resonated with me the most. I summed him up to be the quiet strength of the Heptones: a huge talent who knew when to soar and when to self suppress. Barry was a gentle lion who - in my opinion - soldiered along even in times of near fragmentation. His quiet but determined efforts maintained "The Heptones'" validity in a consistently changing music landscape. His was the stable presence that never left!
For his gift, his efforts, his passion for excellence and the talent he shared with the world, Barry "Heptone" Llewellyn is forever etched in our memories. As one of the fibers in the tapestry of a quilt that is revolution and love, the thread of Barry "Heptone' is sewn deep into the annals of our music's rich legacy. His work is perennial and he lives on. To him we say, Thanks! for a job well done.
Rest in Peace, Barry "Heptone" Llewellyn!
