Health Department of the Year!

The Kansas Association of Counties and the Kansas Association of Local Health Departments recognized the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department as Health Department of the Year during a conference Nov. 13 in Wichita.

Michelle Ponce, executive director of KALHD, said the Health Department was recognized for "making significant contributions to the public health system through innovation, community engagement activities, and a focus on continuous quality improvement." Among specific achievements mentioned were: Creation of the state's first Academic Health Department through partnership with the University of Kansas Work Group for Community Health and Development; coordinating LiveWell Lawrence, a coalition of about 160 members; and receipt of a national Model Practice Award for the Child Care Licensing program.

World AIDS Day activities in Lawrence

In conjunction with World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department encourages residents to get educated about the disease and to get tested.

In the U.S., nearly 1 million people are living with HIV and one in six of those are unaware of their HIV status. In Douglas County, nearly 68 percent of adults report they've never had an HIV test.

The Health Department offers HIV counseling and testing in its clinic at 200 Maine St. To make an appointment, call 843-0721. The Health Department provides about 1,200 HIV tests annually.

On Dec. 1, the Health Department also will be offering education and free HIV testing in the community. Testing will be:

  • 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd.
  • 3-5 p.m. - Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St.
Additionally, the Health Department and the University of Kansas, will offer a free movie showing of "Dallas Buyers Club," a movie about an AIDS patient diagnosed in the 1980s, at 8 p.m. in KU's Ellsworth Residence Hall, 1734 Engel Road. At 7:30 p.m. before the showing, a Kansas resident will share his story of living with HIV. The event is open to the public.

From left, Health Department employees Elizabeth Sedita-Laufer, Frendida Zamora and Alisha Fisher are trained navigators who can answer questions about the Health Insurance Marketplace and help people enroll in a plan.
Need health insurance? It's enrollment
time for Health Insurance Marketplace

The Health Insurance Marketplace is an online system where private companies sell affordable insurance plans. In Kansas, you can access the Marketplace by visiting healthcare.gov.

Open enrollment began Nov. 15 and will end Feb. 15, 2015. The enrollment period is the time to explore your health coverage options, especially if you enrolled in a Marketplace plan in 2014 or you're looking for health insurance.

To start receiving health insurance coverage on Jan. 1, 2015, you need to enroll by Dec. 15.

If you have questions about the Health Insurance Marketplace or need help enrolling in a plan, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department has three staff members who are available to help, including a Spanish speaker. There is no cost to receive assistance, which is available to anyone. To make an appointment, contact the Health Department at 856-5326.
