Un Giro In Abruzzo at Le Virtu' with Domenica Marchetti and Abruzzo Presto!

About a decade ago, Cathy and I were running culinary tours to Abruzzo. It was a sacred mission; we were introducing guests to the region that we had come to think of as a second home. Abruzzo is a 21st-century miracle, an oasis of peace, natural beauty and traditions that nurture and sustain things that are essential and ever more in short supply. Abruzzo demands time to get to know and only opens its true self to those willing to dig deep. In April of 2009, the L'Aquila earthquake disrupted the network of touring partners we'd carefully created over many years, and the business of running Le Virtù left us little time to reconstruct it. Many of you have come to us and asked about traveling to Abruzzo, desirous of penetrating its mystery and having experiences that would allow you to understand the region. For all of you, we have excellent news.

Our favorite cookbook author and friend, Domenica Marchetti, has teamed with Abruzzo Presto! run by Michael and Nancy Morizio, who live part of each year in Abruzzo, to create the kind of culinary and cultural tours we can recommend without reservation. Domenica is a serious student of Italian cuisine whose roots are in Abruzzo. Her award-winning cookbooks are among the most exhaustively researched we've ever read. She celebrates what's elemental and rewarding about food. Michael Morizio's roots are in Abruzzo and he and Nancy have been living in and visiting the region for close to two decades. They are serious students of history and art, with backgrounds in music. The tours they create are intimate (a maximum of 10 people), allow their guests to experience Abruzzo's singular cultural and georgraphic diversity, and permit the kind of experiences one simply doesn't find on a large package tour. With Michael and Nancy, personal relationships are constructed - not just between them and their guests, but more significantly with the people of Abruzzo: its artisans, sheepherds, farmers, wine and cheese makers and cooks. Domenica and the Morizios take as gospel our belief that cuisine is a window on culture, an enjoyable, rewarding way to plumb the profundity of a people and their way of life. They proffer something precious to us with the kind of care and respect that serves the region and its people.

Abruzzo Presto! offers services throughout the year, including the kind of personalized itineraries many of you have requested. Their next tour with Domenica departs on September 18th. To announce and spread the word about this wonderful opportunity, Le Virtù is teaming with Domenica and the Morizios to celebrate Abruzzo and their fall tour. Domenica and Chef Joe Cicala will create a 4-course menu with regional wine pairings, featuring dishes from sites featured in the September tour. Domenica and Joe will also do a pasta demonstration (cooking lessons with Domenica are an essential component of the tour!), and each dish will take us on a culinary tour of the region. Michael and Nancy will be on hand to discuss the tour and their other services.

The event will be held on Thursday, April 14th at 6 pm. The cost (for aperitivi, 4 courses and four wines) will be $85 (excluding tax and gratuity). The final menu will be announced in mid-March.

Monday April 18th:
The Food, Wine and Pastry of Campania with Pastry Chef Angela Ranalli-Cicala and Feast On History

An integral part of Brigantessa and Le Virtù's repective missions is the promotion of the cultures of Italy's historic South, from Abruzzo to Calabria. Our hope is that visiting Brigantessa and Le Virtù will give our guests a taste not only of the food but also of the cultures that we love. But there is no substitute for experiencing these places first hand, and we have fielded many questions about traveling in the South. Truly experiencing southern Italy - a place as mysterious and diverse as it is stunningly beautiful - requires an excellent guide, someone who loves the region deeply and is willing to share its intimate secrets in ways that are respectful to its soul and traditions. We are happy to say we've found the right people.

Feast On History curates food and wine tours focused primarily on Campania (the Amalfi and Cilento coasts, Napoli, Salerno, Capri, Irpinia, etc.). It is run by a couple from New York City: Danielle Oteri is an expert on the renaissance in Napoli, a lecturer at the Cloisters (New York Metropolitan Museum of Art) and a professor of Art History at Seton Hall University. Christian Galliani is the tour wine specialist and a member of the Sommelier Society of America whose expertise has been featured on RAI Italia and The Cooking Channel and in La Corriere della Sera and Today.com. They base their tours at Borgo La Petraia, a stunningly beautiful resort near the Cilento and Amalfi coasts run by Danielle's cousins Antonio and Arianna Scariati. Their tours allow guests rare access to cooks and chefs at region's trattorie and ristoranti, artisanal cheese and wine makers, farms, etc. At a maximum of 12 guests per group, their tours offer the kind of personalized service, intimate contact with local artisans, purveyors and cooks and the cultural immersion that is simply impossible with a larger operation. This is southern Italy as it should be experienced but so very rarely is. And this May much-lauded Brigantessa and Le Virtù pastry chef Angela Ranalli-Cicala will accompany Feast On History on a Food Wine and Pastry Tour of the Amalfi and Cilento coasts. Angela will help guide the tour to some of her favorite pastry shops in the region and teach a special pastry class during the tour. Once again, the group will be small, and only a few openings remain (book now!).

To celebrate Feast On History's tour with Angela and our growing cooperation (we ourselves will be stay at Borgo La Petraia this March with Brigantessa Chef de Cuisine Julia Robinson), we invite you to a tasting dinner at Brigantessa on Monday, April 18th at Brigantessa: four courses with wine pairings that present highlights from the tour. Danielle and Christian will be on hand to answer questions about the May and October trips and their many other services in the region and discuss the art, history, culture, food and wines of Campania. And, of course, Angela will be on hand as well.

The event will begin at 6 pm at Brigantessa. The cost will be $75 per person (excluding taxes and gratuity). Menu details will be release in mid-March
