Greetings!
Welcome to our May 2012 Newsletter! We are pleased to announce our brand new website is live at www.lightandland.co.uk. We have tours that have just been announced as well as new and exciting tours to destinations that we will be visiting for the very first time.
We are featuring a selection of our tours here, but why not see the new Light & Land website and many more new tours for yourselves?
We have launched a brand new competition on the website, with a first prize of a place on tour in Arctic Norway with Charlie Waite & Antony Spencer in November, in pursuit of the northern lights! Simply upload up to three images and the image that receives the most votes will win, its as simple as that! You can share your images wherever you like accross the internet, (facebook, twitter etc) as absolutely anyone can vote for the images they like. The more traffic you can send to your images, the more votes you are likely to receive! Please see the competition page for further details.
All users will need to set up a new account for the new website as all accounts for the previous site no longer remain. This is a very simple task and should only take a couple of minutes.

Lofoten Islands 2012
The ultimate coastline...
Norway is internationally famous for what Slartibartfast, in A Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, memorably referred to as the "crinkly bits" - fjords! The entire western seaboard of Norway is incised with these relics of past Ice Ages. The whole tour takes place north of the Arctic Circle; Northern Norway is still the "land of the midnight sun" we visit in late July, so this extraordinary landscape will never be in darkness. Our first base is the delightful university city of Tromsø, home to both the world's most northerly cathedral and brewery! The two main landscape attractions are the beautiful islands to the west of the city - including Kvaløya, Sommarøy with its white sand beaches and mountainous Vanna - and the permanently snow-capped Lyngen Alps. Canadian Rockies
Banff, Jasper Kootenay and Yoho national parks
There can be few places on Earth where so much dramatic mountain scenery is to be found as in the string of incredible National Parks - Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho - which stretch north-west from Calgary in the Canadian Rockies. This tour is limited to a maximum of 8 participants for a more structured learning experience.
The charming and beautiful Lake Louise is our first base. It is ideally situated for exploring the famous Lake, Gem of the Rockies, and the not so popular, but arguably more beautiful, Morraine Lake whose turquoise waters are backed by tremendous snow capped peaks. Vermilion Lakes, just outside Banff, provides wonderful opportunities for dawn photography with the distinctive Mount Rundle rising beyond the still tree-fringed waters. Nearby, the Bow Valley Parkway provides numerous opportunities for images of the mountains and wildlife such as moose, elk and beaver. There are several short trails taking us deeper into the wild high country to places like the waterfalls of Johnston Canyon and the seven cold-water springs amid mountain pastures at the Ink Pots.

2012 - Cuba
Few places in the world provide the photographer with more opportunities to create exciting images than Cuba. Situated at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba is the largest of the Caribbean islands, and although only a short distance from the USA, it couldn't be more different. From the moment you arrive in the capital city of Havana, it becomes apparent that this is a special place. The friendliness of the Cubans disguises the country's chequered political history, while harmonious music and dance are never far. Smiling is both obligatory and infectious! The old town of Havana - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - makes an ideal starting point for our exciting photographic adventure. You'll need plenty of film or CompactFlash cards to capture the Colonial squares, arcades, decayed balconies, richly coloured 1950s American saloon cars, and photogenic Habaneros. Find out more... |
Exmoor 2012
There are few places in England (some would say the world!) that have such a variety of beautiful, unspoilt scenery packed into such a relatively small space as Exmoor. The second smallest of England's National Parks, barely 267 square miles, it nevertheless possesses some of the most diverse and spectacular landscapes to be found anywhere in the country. Exmoor's splendour and stunning natural beauty leaves an indelible mark on its visitors.
Our journey will take us from Tarr Steps, a prehistoric clapper bridge spanning the river Barle in the heart of the moor with some of the stones weighing over five tons, to the mysterious Valley of the Rocks, perched on the cliffs above Lynton & Lynmouth. The Exmoor coast is one of the most unspoilt and best-protected stretches of coastline in England and Wales.

NEW for 2013- Washington & Oregon The Pacific Northwest
The Pacific Northwest is one of the worlds premier regions for landscape photography. Vast Pacific ocean beaches and sea stacks, waterfalls as photogenic as any other on the planet, huge volcanoes, temperate rain forests and landscapes such as the Palouse truly make this a must visit location.
Join Antony Spencer and Seattle based landscape photographer Justin Reznick on a journey through this unmissable landscape.
Starting in the Palouse region and photographing the incredible hills and undulations in full spring colours we move on to the waterfalls of the phenomenal Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. We end our journey in the Olympic National Park on the Washington coastline with the Olympic Mountains, lush rain forests and some of the most pic beaches imaginable.

Orkney Islands
With a history of human habitation that dates back some 5000 years, and a historical melting pot that combines Norse, Viking, Celtic and Scottish influences, it's no wonder that Orkney's Neolithic Heartland was awarded World Heritage Site status in 1999. This fascinating archipelago, off Scotland's north coast, consists of more than 70 islands, only 17 of which are inhabited.
We will be visiting the two largest islands - Orkney Mainland and Hoy - as well as the smaller Burray, South Ronaldsay, Lamb Holm and Glimsholm.
The potential for photography is huge - and not least because of the vagaries of the Scottish climate! The west mainland is the largest area and features many of the renowned historical sites that we plan to visit. Skara Brae, the stone village of Barnhouse, the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Brough of Gurness, the Tomb of Maeshowe... all will provide opportunities for atmospheric and varied images. | Autumn in the Lake District
It's difficult for us to imagine now, but two hundred years ago the Lake District was thought ugly and quite literally terrible! The English Lake District was one of the birthplaces of our modern Western love of rugged and 'wild' landscape. Wordsworth, the great Romantic poet, and a "lakeman" through and through, lived in Grasmere in the heart of this beautiful region and through his glorious verse did much to change the public perception of the landscape.
This compact National Park is often thought of, by both British and overseas visitors, as the most beautiful region in the British Isles. Surprisingly this iconic landscape is a mere 35 miles across. Lake Windermere, the largest of the sixteen lakes, is just ten and a half miles long.

Cairngorms 2012
Join us for five wonderful days in Britain's only sub-arctic landscape where a high mountain plateau rises above miles of forest made up of Caledonian Pine, Birch, Oak and Rowan.
Our visit is timed to co-incide with the peak of Autumn colour in the area and possibly the first dustings of snow on Britain's largest tract of land over 2000 feet high.
From our base just outside the town of Aviemore we will venture out into the Rothiemurchus estate and Glenmore Forest Park on a network of fine paths that will lead us to beautiful lochans, past meadows of gently swaying grasses backed by ranks of mature Scot's Pine. Hidden away are the usual ruins of old abandoned farm houses and cars. Rising out of the forest the Cairngorm plateau very aptly lives up to its name, the mountains always having appearing blue whether under the shroud of clouds or beneath a clear sky.
