Hydration on and off the pitch
"For most exercising athletes, the ideal fluid for pre-hydration and re-hydration is water.  Water is quickly absorbed, well-tolerated, an excellent thirst quencher, and cost effective.  The use of a sports drink with appropriate carbohydrates (CHO) and sodium may prove beneficial in some general situations and for some individuals.  Traditional sports drinks containing appropriate concentrations of CHO (6-8%) and sodium may provide additional benefit in the following general situations:
  • Prolonged continuous activity of greater than 45 minutes
  • Extremely intense activity with risk of heat illness
  • Extremely hot and humid conditions"

Make your own "Sports Drink"

If you regularly engage in strenuous activity of an hour or more and feel you could benefit from a 'sports drink', you don't need to fork out for a commercial one. Here's a recipe from the US Olympic Committee:

1/4 cup sugar
 1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup hot water
1/4 cup orange juice (or Low Carb Fruit Juice)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 ½ cups cold water

Dissolve the sugar and salt in hot water, then add juices and cold water.

A simpler recipe is to combine 500mL of unsweetened fruit juice, 500mL of water and a quarter of a teaspoon of salt. Experiment a little with the proportions - less juice, more water and half the salt will make it hypotonic (less concentrated).

Who's on Your Team?

Stuart Bancroft- New to the Lower Island Soccer Association office but certainly not new to the game.  Stuart brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Administrative Assistant role at the Soccer Office.

Growing up in Sidney, Stuart played his youth soccer for Peninsula, leading his U16 and U18 Gold teams to Provincial titles.  Graduating to the VISL Stuart has played the better part of the last 9 seasons with Vic West FC in Division 1.  Although long term health problems have recently put an end to his playing career Stuart continues to be involved with the game as he transitions into a coaching role.

Off the field Stuart has focused his education and career goals on all things sport related.  Stuart has a Bachelor Degree in Sport and Fitness Leadership specializing in Sport Management from Camosun College.  Having interned and worked in the Victoria Highlanders office Stuart is no stranger to the inner workings of a soccer organization.  Aside from soccer Stuart is an avid traveller, having visited upwards of 23 countries on 5 continents.  Highlights include Everest Base Camp in 2016, and attending 7 matches at 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Stuart is very excited to start his new career in the Soccer Office
