Q. A player in a tournament discarded a tile, and the next two players claimed it for Mah Jongg.  I know the player to the discarder's immediate right (whose turn it is next) gets the tile, BUT - she exposed and it turns out she didn't have mahj after all.  So, does the next player get that tile for her mah jongg?  Barbara G, CA

A.  The 2nd player who wanted that discarded tile for mah jongg - gets that tile and the Mah Jongg.....HOWEVER...this rule holds true for getting Mah Jongg only.
If the 2nd player had claimed that same discarded tile for an exposure, she could not take that tile, because it became a "dead" tile once it was claimed and exposed for Mah Jongg in error.

Q. Yesterday I was playing in a home game.  I was set for Mah Jongg when I reaized I had 14 tiles.  I then spotted someone with 12 tiles.  I called her hand dead.  A few minutes later it dawned on her that I had 14 tiles, so she called me dead.  Question is, if her hand is dead and she's not really in the game, can she call my hand dead; or does it have to be done by someone still in the game?  MaryJ, FL

A. Your dead opponent was no longer in the game - and should not have called you dead.  Unfortunately, she drew everyone's attention to the fact that you had too many tiles...so the issue was moot at that point.
Remember too, that a bettor (5th) can not make any comments about the game, or draw attention to an issue.

Q. A player called mahj after a tile was discarded, then picked up that tile and used it in an exposure.  Then realized she didn't have mahj.  Was she dead or could she have continued to play? Cheryl R, CA

A. As long as the player claiming the discaded tile has made a correct exposure using that claimed tile - has not yet exposed any other tiles, and has not yet discarded a tile to end her turn....then she is not dead; and she may continue playing the game.

Q. At our Mahj Club during social play, there was an exposure of 4 craks with a joker.  Another player started to name a 4 crak but realized she could replace the joker.  She never completed naming the tile -  in fact she never even got the full word "four" out - and the tile never hit the table (or if it did she never released it...this is a gray area).  Should she have been allowed to use that tile to replace it for the joker?
Jane C, SC

A. In a tournament, if a player said as little as "ffff," she would lose the opportunity to exchange for a joker.  In our home/social game, that rule also prevails.
If the player held out the tile she was going to discard, no sound was uttered, and the tile did not touch the table.... then she could exchange it for the joker.

Q. A player announces "9 dot."  After naming the tile can she change her mind and discard a different tile?  I teach my class "said-is-said, down-is-down.  No changing minds."  Am I correct? Helaine G, CA

A. You are correct.  In a tournament, "said-is-said, and down-is-down."  Well put.

MAH JONG MASTER POINTS TOURNAMENTS ARE ALL OVER THE CONTRY
Since you are already playing in tournaments, ask your Host if they are participating in the program. It is easy and quick for them to register their events.
As players, we don't want to miss the opportunities to add to our scores.
Your tournament host can set up an account for their event(s) on the Master Point website at

Tournament Hosts post information about their events; and register you as a player on the website.  Points are automatically given for attending and playing in an event; and all scoring is done automatically on this incredible website.
Whether you play in a casual 3-hour tournament at your community clubhouse, an all-day event at a hotel or resort, at your Church or Synagogue, at a charity event, a cruise, or a weekend event....you're likely playing in a tournament that can be qualified for master points.
All that is necessary is 16 or more players, and sticking to the standardized tournament rules and scoring.
