Girls Rugby Honors Graduating Senior
at Final Game of the Season!

Mustang Rugby would like to honor its only graduating senior for the 2017 Mira Costa Girls Rugby Season.  Maria Meola is the first Captain of the Mustang Girls Rugby program.  Maria was born in Vancouver, Canada.  She maintains a 3.3 GPA.  As a freshman Maria was a starter on the Costa Varsity Lacrosse team. Maria also plays hockey on the California Wave a AAA all-star team.   This is the second year of rugby for Maria.  Maria is also the leading scorer for the Mustangs.

Thank you, Maria for all of your hard work and being a trailblazer for Mira Costa Girls Rugby Program...we will miss you!

Congratulations to the Costa Lady Ruggers as they finished their final home game of 2017. Lone Senior Captain Maria Meola finished off well in front of the home crowd by scoring against a very good team from Roosevelt HS. The Coach Taylor's girls fought valiantly against a very big and physical Centennial High School team as well.

Costa Boys Ruggers Cruise to a
64-0 Win on Senior Night!

The Varsity took to the pitch on Senior Night as the Mustangs honored their very successful class of 2017. With their 21 game home win streak on the line, the Mustangs wasted no time in dispatching the Citrus Valley Blackhawks.  The final score was 64-0 when Dulgarian kicked the ball into touch to end the game.  The victory drives the Costa record to 5-0, first place in the Los Angeles Division and sets up a road match vs. a very big and strong Roosevelt HS side from Eastvale, CA. It also maintains the Costa home win streak of 22-0. Unfortunately it was the final home game (unless the Mustangs get a home playoff game) for this overachieving senior class who we would like to honor:

David Arredondo-Fly-Half
Samuel Blake-Flanker
Cade Christensen-Outside Center
Liam DiGregorio-Team Manager
Jordan Fischer-Inside Center
Justin Goring-Outside Center
Tommy Kendal-Wing
Gunnar Kissman-Flanker
Callum Lapper-Hooker
Alec Oshita-Lock
Kevin Russell-Wing
Shane Thomas-Prop
Sean Walker-Fullback
Harrison Dulgarian-Scrum-Half/Team Captain

Costa Boys Ruggers Dispatch View Park

Costa Boys and their friends from View Park for some post match fellowship with their brothers in Rugby.

The #10 nationally ranked Mira Costa Rugby team travelled to Jackie Robinson Stadium to take on a very good and spirited side from View Park Prep. On a very cold night the boys from Costa took to a football sized pitch which would prove to hamper the Mustangs open style of play as both sides played about 10 minutes of Forward drives. Costa finally got on the board as Captain Harrison Dulgarian alertly used a quick lineout to Number 8 Jonah Tavai who then offloaded to Outside Center Cade Christiansen who found Wing Evanson Franck-Love streaking down the right side for the score.
The momentum shifted between the two teams and the score was 20-10 at the half.

Costa came out the 2nd half a different team than the one that had started the game as they settled into their style of play...fast, unselfish rugby mixing the Forwards and the Backs.  Costa pulled away for a 46-20 final score. The victory puts Costa at 4-0 on the year (2-0 in league) and in a first place tie (with archrival St. John Bosco) in the Los Angeles division.

Just before the Varsity match the Costa JVs beat View Park 21-10 as Inside Center Slade Gordon, Number 8 Tommy Undurraga, Flankers Jarem Cortez, Austin Tiradeau and his brother Brandon were the catalyst for the victory for Coaches Hammer and Gordon.

Soccer Updates

Girls Soccer

Mira Costa Girls Soccer had some solid wins against Inglewood and Morningside, however, they came up short against Redondo last week.  On Friday they played an aggressive game against Peninsula which resulted in a 0-0 tie and continued into OT.  Despite a solid effort and solid possession of the ball, they could not score and the game ended in a tie.  Their record is 2-2-1. They are led by team Captains Emelie Flaig, Emmy Farber and Delaney Whittet as they start the second round of the Bay League Season against Palos Verdes this week.

Boys' Soccer
Boys' Soccer wrapped up the first half of Bay League play with a thrilling overtime "golden goal" last Friday night beating Peninsula 2-1. Alex deSouza got the game winner and Kyle Johnson scored our first goal. The assists were provided by Brad Hofmeister and Tanner Hong who also have been key defensive players. Goalkeepers Ethan Hseih and Andrew Fasano have been splitting time and were stellar. This game helped shake off the tough loss 2-1 against Redondo last Tuesday. Kyle Johnson scored our goal in that game and we played great as a team dominating in possession and shots on goal.

We beat Inglewood 2-1 in the first week of league play on goals from Trevor Taub and Coleman Weaver. The assists were from deSouza and Koa Work.

Our league record is 3-2-0 as we prepare to take on Palos Verdes to start the second round. We play Tuesday, 1/31 at P.V. and are confident that we can avenge a loss we suffered in our first meeting.

Our team is lead by captains Brady Douglas and James Marsh who solidify our defense. Josh Rudow has been fantastic as an outside defender and Max Taylor has found his stride as a center midfielder. Michael Demarte is another defender who has performed very well.

Costa Boys Basketball hosts successful
Youth Night

Mira Costa gym had a full house when the Boys Basketball team hosted their Youth Night on January 27th.  The Boys Varsity game vs. Peninsula opened with Allie, a 7 year old from Hermosa Beach, singing the National Anthem.
During the quarter breaks and half time, the Costa dance team demonstrated their award winning skills and even lead the half time free throw contest.  An American Martyrs student won and took home a $50 gift card to Super Sports for making 6 free throws in 15 seconds.

As Bay League picks up for the second half of the season, the team will be facing another tough round of competition.
