Assess What's Worth Assessing
Paul Liabenow, MEMSPA Executive Director
We don’t want to over-assess students and teachers, but we sure seem to. And in our desire to assess less—especially assessment OF learning, which is the type used to certify if learning has occurred—we sometimes sacrifice assessing the things that truly matter.

The MDE has made an investment in arts programming in Michigan through the Michigan Arts Education Instruction and Assessment (MAEIA) project. Performance assessment is the cornerstone of this project because the catalogue of 360 performance assessments enable teachers and their students to focus on assessing what’s worth assessing—a student’s capacity to engage in the creative process.

The MAEIA project has included field tests with arts teachers and the principals charged with evaluating them as they use performance assessments to demonstrate educator effectiveness .  The results of the field test have been terrific and serves as a strong model for using more performance assessment across all disciplines .
