THE PATH OF COMPASSION

Recently I ran across an old clipping about air traffic at the Peachtree-DeKalb Airport. As one might guess, the airport authorities receive a number of complaints about noise, the height of some planes on their approach, and other issues associated with a busy airport and a congested community. I imagine that most of the complaints arise when a plane tries to take off or land when the scores are being announced, when the newborn finally drops off to sleep, or when the final Jeopardy answer is revealed.
In the month in question, authorities had received some eight-hundred complaints, but the surprise was that over six hundred of the calls were made by just two people! One fellow called over four hundred fifty times and another over two hundred times! That means that the first fellow called every half-hour in an eight hour day and the second fellow called every forty-five minutes. That's incredible! That's tenacity! That's persistence! That's.... silly. And sad.
The callers in question would have benefitted a great deal with some time with Dr. Ron Greer, our guest this morning during the Sunday School hour. Ron, who has been our guest here before, is a United Methodist minister and director of the Pastoral Counseling Service at the Peachtree Road UMC. He is the author of a number of books ( Now That They Are Grown , Markings on the Windowsill , and If You Know Who You Are, You'll Know What To Do ), and undoubtedly you have heard me quote from those works from the pulpit.
In his latest book, Ron makes the point that we can learn compassion through some intentional choices and he leads us through the process of making those choices ("I have to think, discern, and decide. Then I have to act."). For those of us who think compassion is determined by heredity, the attitudes of those whom we encounter, or merely dependent upon the situations which confront us, his insistence that our own decisions are causative is a great break-through.
I hope you'll join me and the various Sunday School classes this Sunday in the sanctuary at 10:10. In a world of great stress and far too many moving parts, Dr. Greer's words will be a healing balm. I'll see you there.
