Making Volunteerism Smarter!

May 2012

Greetings!

Go team! We're getting into one of the best times of the year for group volunteering. Whether you're part of a work group at a business, a member of a community group or faith-based organization, or simply a bunch of neighborhood do-gooders with a sense of community pride, Denver has some of the greatest opportunities for groups of volunteers anywhere in the region.

A group of hard-working VISA volunteers planted a new garden at MV Member Third Way Center last summer.
Here are a few things to consider before launching your group project.
  • What kind of impact do you want to make? Do you want to help seniors, kids, or improve the environment? There are all sorts of projects out there to choose from. You can search for a volunteer project that's good for groups from our Volunteer page.
  • What type of work would you like to do? Do you want to pack food at the Action Center's warehouse, go on a weatherization field trip with Veterans Green Jobs, or help spiff up the Family Tree's Treasure Trunk shop?
  • Do you want to volunteer inside or outside? Hanging out with the Parks People on a tree-planting in April is incredible. But when it's a hundred degrees, you might want to volunteer in the cool confines of Project C.U.R.E. getting together medical supplies to ship overseas.
  • When would you like to volunteer? The more flexible you can be with the day, time, and length of your volunteer project, the happier our volunteer coordinators are.

The best way to get started with a group volunteer project is to contact a few Metro Volunteers member agencies to find out about their group volunteer opportunities, requirements, and schedules.

Some of the best agencies for group volunteers include our friends at:

  • Project Angel Heart
  • The Action Center
  • Veterans Green Jobs
  • The Parks People
  • Bessie's Hope
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Colorado
  • Family Tree
  • The Grow Haus
  • Groundwork Denver
  • and many more MV member agencies around the  Denver metro area.

If you work for a mid-to-large sized business and your company would like to take advantage of project referrals, customized volunteer projects, or planned days of service, check out our Corporate Membership Guide for information on benefits and services for companies.

You can also check out the 2012 Volunteer Guide for contacts and more ideas. Now get out there!

Thank You, Volunteers of Denver!
Volunteer Fest Colorado 2012 draws  500+ new volunteers

Metro Volunteers would like to thank everybody who came to Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium on April 17th for Volunteer Fest Colorado 2012. The day was an enormous success.

Lt. Governor Joseph Garcia praised Denver's volunteers and their commitment to our beautiful state at the 7 Everday Hero awards, where over 300 guests enjoyed lunch and the honoring of local volunteers.

In the afternoon, over 500 new volunteers were on hand to visit 90 nonprofit agencies who provide a host of services throughout the community. Our new volunteers included retirees, professionals, job-seekers, families with children, and many others seeking new ways to help.

If you missed this year's event, there are still ways for you to learn about volunteer opportunities and make a difference in your community.

Make a Difference in the Lives of Youth
MV Member Spotlight: Second Wind Fund of Metro Denver

Some volunteer opportunities are just too important be ignored. That's the case with Metro Volunteers member agency Second Wind Fund of Metro Denver (SWFMD). The mission of Second Wind Fund of Metro Denver is to decrease the incidence of teen suicide by removing financial and social barriers to treatment for at-risk youth.

Today, Second Wind Fund of Metro Denver provides free, professional counseling services to hundreds of local youth every year, with 2,300 referrals from 300 schools made in the Denver area since 2002. While their mission is serious, this great organization has a crazy amount of fun, too. Their 5k Music Festival, an event that started as a church picnic fundraiser is now the largest suicide prevention event in the nation with thousands of participants every September.

SWFMD is actively recruiting past and prospective volunteers! Volunteer Meetings are held every third Thursday at 6:00pm at Green Mountain Presbytarian Church in Lakewood. The next meeting is May 17th at 6 PM, with refreshments and a chance to win a gift card. These are great opportunities for a good cause. Visit the Volunteer Page at www.swfmd.org to find out how you can get involved.

Metro Volunteers Honored by Family Tree, Inc.
One good turn deserves another

Metro Volunteers is honored to be nominated for the 19th Annual Celebration of Achievement Community Award by our member agency Family Tree, Inc.

The 2012 Family Tree Community Award is given to an individual, business or corporation who is a special friend to Family Tree. Often, this is a company or organization wherein individuals step forward, giving their time, energy and resources to enrich the lives of others.

As a longstanding member of Metro Volunteers, Family Tree has been a vital community partner and an important resource to the community with the mission of helping people overcome child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness to become safe, strong and self-reliant. In the past year, Metro Volunteers has channeled hundreds of volunteers and many supplies to Family Tree through our relationships with our corporate partners and the local volunteer community.

If you would like to support Metro Volunteers and Family Tree, please join us at the Family Tree's Celebration of Achievement event on June 14, 2012. More information about tickets and partnership opportunities can be found on the Family Tree's website at www.thefamilytree.org.
