Elsie Smith Travels Roads to Adventureby Ron Orem, a MotoMark1 Student
 | |
Elsie Smith on the Road to Adventure
|
Elsie Smith is a committed (and committable) long distance rider, having completed many 24 hour rallies, and successfully finishing the prestigious Iron Butt Rally. Her riding passion began long ago with small dirt bikes, and fast street bikes; think XS1100 going as fast as it would in the middle of the night. Later, as she "matured" she became known for pushing her BMW RT down roads it was not intended to ride on by the makers, and more than once, requiring some inventive terrain rearranging to get it unstuck.
A couple of years ago Elsie succumbed to the whispers in her ears and traded the RT for a BMW F650GS single to allow her to explore even more remote and unpaved roads with her riding partners. Elsie was tired of picking up the RT, and not listening to stories of unpaved road travel from her friends. It was soon apparent that she needed to upgrade her skills to match the roads she was traveling on, as well as preparing for a trip to Mexico.
Ron suggested that she attend MotoMark1's ADV course, and he would come along to help her pick the bike up (Not!). Elsie spent a very hot and humid day in the fields with Mark, learning the skills she would put to good use on the trip to Mexico. The following spring she helped organize a trip to the southwest, where a small group spent several days poking around dirt roads in southern Utah and Colorado, despite some snow, high winds, and cold nights.
There aren't many roads Elsie won't try now, alone or with a partner. The basic off roads skills she learned in the ADV course complement her well developed street skills, creating an unusually well balanced rider...er, driver!
In Elsie's words...
In the summer of 2008, I took Mark's Adventure Off-Road class. It gave me the confidence to take an off-pavement tour later that fall in Mexico. Met a tour group in McAllen, TX and then spent a week in northern Mexico. Of the approx. 1,000 mile tour, about 200 miles were off-pavement. There were very thrilling views from some of the mountain passes. Had a blast in the sand and many times heard Mark's coaching in my head while traversing difficult sections. However, the most fun is riding with the guys on local mid-Atlantic trails.

Tips from MotoMark1
Driving a motorcycle is controlling it on purpose. It is an attitude, knowledge and skill that you possess to master your own two wheel domain.
Fact: You will not get better at anything if you don't train, practice and open your mind to new ideas, methods and techniques. If your bike is garage candy, do not expect to be good at driving it, only good at bragging about it. If you ride only once or twice a week , you'll always be rusty and look like a beginner.
Every time you go out on your motorcycle it should be treated as a mission. The Marine Corps has a saying... "Accomplish the mission". Your mission is to plan your drive and drive your plan. Practice on each mission and be careful about the situations you put yourself in. Safe motorcycling is all about driving on purpose and skilled decision making. Come train and practice with Motomark1, LLC.

From our Facebook page

Mark says on June 23rd...
"Just returned from a conference out of state & received an award for the work we have been doing on Motorcycle training & safety. We were the only one to get an award from North Carolina. I am honored to have received this. The award goes out to all those that have helped me over the years & stayed with me. Thank you to all who are involved especially God, my family & friends."
And on July 25th, he asks this...
"Hey folks got a question, do you think parents would pay for their kids to get some Advanced Teen Driving? or insurance companies give a discount to parents that get this type of training for their teenagers? We are exploring this due to the increase in teenage driving fatalities. MotoMark1 Driving School Cars and Motorcycles. Just a thought. I think we can do something to help reduce these crashes. "
