Renowned Expert on Coping with Cancer Will Speak at Mountainside Hospital

Dr. Jimmie C. Holland, a renowned psychiatrist, author and founder of the field of psycho-oncology, the study of the psychological aspects of cancer, will share insights on living with cancer at Mountainside Hospital, One Bay Avenue, on Monday, February 20th at 10 a.m.

"This topic strikes a chord with all who have personally received a diagnosis of cancer, as well as those who are supporting a loved one who is living with cancer and health professionals Dr. Hollanddedicated to serving the medical and emotional needs of cancer patients," observed Dr.  Jose Barba, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Mountainside Hospital and a board-certified radiation oncologist.

"Despite remarkable advances in the treatment of various types of cancer and constantly improving outcomes, for most patients and their families, a finding of cancer is a very stressful and life-altering event. We are pleased to offer this opportunity to hear from one of the foremost experts on the human of side of that disease," he said.

Dr. Jimmie C. Holland is the Wayne E. Chapman Chair for Psychiatric Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. In fact, Dr. Holland established the psychiatry service at that prestigious institution in 1977 and became the Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences when it achieved departmental status in 1996.  She is the co-author of "The Human Side of Cancer"(with Sheldon Lewis), initially published more than decade ago and currently available in paperback. That groundbreaking book has been hailed by reviewers for the New England Journal of Medicine for its excellence and featured on the ABC News show, "20/20."

Dr. Holland is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American College of Psychiatrists, as well as a former president of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. The American Psychiatric Association awarded her its Presidential Commendation in 2000 and she was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science in 1995.  She has also served on numerous National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Mental Health committees.

Dr. Holland is credited with conducting some of the first epidemiologic studies on the psychological impact of cancer, examining how cancer affects patients, their families and caregivers, along with psychological and behavioral factors that impact cancer risk and survival. In addition to "The Human Side of Cancer," her editorial credits include authoring the medical profession's first textbook on psycho-oncology, co-founding the Psycho-Oncology Journal and service on the editorial boards of several journals including Cancer.

"Dr. Holland's appearance marks the fourth consecutive year for the Virginia Harkness Sawtelle Department of Radiation Oncology Lecture," said Dr. Jose Barba.  A gift from Mrs. Sawtelle, a former radiation oncology patient at Mountainside, funds the annual lectures.

"This timely series is one of many initiatives that underscore this hospital's commitment to providing an exceptional standard of care within our convenient, community setting," said Dr. Robert Zager, Medical Director of the Mountainside Hospital Cancer Center and board-certified oncologist.  Further information about the Mountainside Hospital Cancer Center is available online at www.mountainsidehosp.com.  To register for this free program, call (973) 429-6964 or e-mail megan.voytus@mountainsidehosp.com.

Congratulations to the Transitional Care Unit

The Mountainside Hospital Transitional Care Unit was inspected by the New Jersey Department of Health in an annual survey to ensure the compliance of state and federal regulations. During this survey, staff and residents were observed in their interactions with one another and their patients. Patients and family members were also interviewed to assess their opinions about the quality of care they or their loved one has received. One patient commented, ""I have been here several times and the care just keeps on getting better and better." Surveyors form the New Jersey Department of Health also toured the facility to measure the comfort and safety of the facility. Administration of medications by the nursing staff was observed, as well as evaluation of meals to ensure quality, taste, and nutritional balance.

This year, the Transitional Care Unit completed a 100% deficiency free survey.
