Greetings!
We'd like to welcome you to summer and the busy season for high performance driving and racing in the Rocky Mountains. In just a few days, many of us will be heading to Pueblo Motor Sports Park and experiencing the fresh pavement. It'll be a real treat to drive and everyone seems really excited about it!!!
After that, High Plains Raceway will be August 4-5. This is always our best attended weekend of the year and we often sell out our HPDE groups, so it's time to start making your plans.
This newsletter has a few new fun things. This time there is a section on Camaro Mustang Challenge. We'll try to include a new class highlight each time. We've also got a section on our HyperDrive program. As a precursor to HPDE, we really make things easy and inexpensive for someone wanting to try high performance driving. Make sure to pass on the info about HyperDrive program to someone new as there is always room for new blood in NASA.
Please forward this email to at least one friend that doesn't know about NASA.
Sincerely,
Dave and Revkah Balingit NASA Rocky Mountain

NASA SpeedNews
We hope everyone has been enjoying the new electronic version of SpeedNews and the expanded coverage that we can all enjoy. Having our own publication has it's pros and cons. On one hand, we can now provide in depth coverage for the events and subjects that you want to hear most about. On the other side, we need to have fresh material and not just the "same old race reports". What types of stories or articles would you like to see? Do you have a recommendation on a particular subject? Just let us know and we can pass it along. Or, of course feel free to fire off an email to Richard James our editor. Click on the cover pictures to jump to any of the six editions |

NASA Hyper Drive
How Do We Hook New People?
Do you know someone that you've been trying to get to come out to a track event?I think we all have one or two friends that we know would love the sport, but always have a valid excuse of why they can't do it. Here's a few reasons:
It's too expensive It'll be too hard on my car I don't have a helmet I drive a truck I can't spend all day/weekend at the track I don't want to spend the $$ only to find out it's not for me
NASA has a program to help break down those barriers and we've found that once many people try NASA HyperDrive
they get hooked and want to come back for more.
Ok, so what is a HyperDrive you ask. It's a single session of HPDE1, but is designed to be a brief primer and just enough to give someone a taste of this sport that we all love. The total cost is $40 and no NASA membership is required. The time involved is of course the 20 minutes of track time, a quick classroom and tech inspection with one of our certified HPDE instructors. The person needs to show up an hour before their selected HPDE1 time slot and then they can leave right after. Two hours at the track and $40 - That is it!!! This breaks down all of the typical reasons. Ok, we can't fix "I drive a truck", but we got most of them!!!! If you know someone who might really enjoy this, let's get them signed up!!!! This also works great if you are an HPDE3/4/TT driver and you are wanting your crew/spouse/so/etc to give HPDE a shot in your car. |

Moving Up the
HPDE Ladder
Let's chat a bit about how the process works and what the group leaders will be looking for so you can advance.
When you feel you are ready to move to the next group, talk to your group leader at one of your morning or download meetings. Let them know how many days you have done in the current group and what you have been working on in order to get ready to go to the next level. This should be an honest talk between you and the group leader. The dialog should be based on your needs and the big picture including the skill level of the drivers in the next group. Moving into the next group too early won't do you or other drivers any favors.
Consider this. You are wanting to move to the next HPDE level to "get away from the slower drivers that get in your way." If you move too early, this may result in you being called out as "the slow driver in the xxx that is always in the way." A higher group is not always better.
If you go for a checkout ride and are not passed onto the next group, do not be upset or hard on yourself. If it was an automatic, we would just let people change groups without a check ride.
The group leaders primary concern is to insure that you are in the correct group based on what you need to work on so you'll be getting the correct coaching levels. Don't forget, it's not all about speed!!! You are not going to impress the instructor with blazing fast laps. They are looking for consistency, awareness, attitude and reactions. If they feel that moving you to the next group level at that time will be a benefit to your learning vs staying in the current group, you'll be advanced.
Again, don't be upset if you aren't ready to be moved up. The group leader will give you a list of things to work on where they would like to see improvement. You'll then have a focused list to attack. Don't move up before you can meet the driving requirements for the next group lap after lap after lap. There is nothing more humbling (or embarrassing) to run in the next group level and then be asked to move back down to the prior group. |
