As a byway leader, I among many in the byway world, just love promoting byway travel this time of year.  There's nothing quite like like exploring these roads less traveled as the leaves change color and fall from the trees, offering up an entirely different view of the landscape.

At the National Scenic Byway Foundation, we too are navigating a changing landscape.  We are working to empower, strengthen and sustain byways through improved communication, programming, and developing partnerships with other national organizations and federal agencies in order to advance byways.

As we prepare to enter a new year, please consider supporting the NSB Foundation by becoming a member. Efforts by NSBF board members and co-directors are 100% volunteer. Help us be your voice for a stronger byway program by becoming a member of the National Scenic Byway Foundation today!

Best regards,

National Scenic Byways Participates in the 2014 Preserving the Historic Road Conference

The National Scenic Byway Foundation, as well as a wide variety of national and state byways, were represented at the ninth biennial Preserving the Historic Road conference held in Savannah, Georgia on September 26-28, 2014.  Rob Draper stated that of the 125 participants and presenters attending, more than 30 had a Byway connection.

Three Mobile Workshops were also offered for all to enjoy coastal scenery, architecture and walkways as well as the

automobile heritage tied to roadways.

Twenty paper presentation sessions were offered throughout the con

ference dealing with historic roads, preservation, safety issu

es, assessment, organizations and byways.  These sessions were well attended.  All conference participants were provided with a flash drive that contained all presentation papers.  Attendees were also treated t

o a documentary film featuring the Dixie Highway and its creation and economic impact.  The Dixie Highway linked Detroit to Miami and had a significant impact on life and economy along its path.

Appreciation was expressed from the Historic Roads Association leadership regarding our National Scenic Byway Foundation conference partnership. NSBF representatives returned the thanks. Special thanks to Rob Draper and Wanda Maloney serving as the conference representatives from the NSBF.

Colorado Byway Program 25 years old

Gold Belt Tour Byway
Colorado's Scenic and Historic Byways program is commemorating 25 years of service to tourists and the state's economy by designating routes that provide exceptional scenic, historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities.  The state's 25 Scenic and Historic Byways all function independently and each one offers the traveler a unique "Centennial State" experience.

Overall, Colorado's Byways consist of:
  • 2,492 miles (state highway miles 2,006; country/local roads 486)140 driving hours
  • 47 counties
  • 11 America's Byways (more national designations than any other state)
  • 10 are part of U.S. Forest Service Byways; two are Bureau of Land Management Back Country Byways.
As part of commemorating the 25th anniversary, CDOT is hosted by "Byways Elevated."  A conference was held in Black Hawk on June 19th and 20th for the people directly involved with the program.  The purpose was to provide information and future planning and funding, historic preservation, and the best ways to gain awareness and increase travel along the byways.  About 100 people attended.  Gold Belt Tour Byway was recognized as one of the first inaugural byways.  Along with 4 other byways, Gold Belt Tour was designated a State Scenic and Historical Byway on September 22, 1989.

Topic of Interest:  Transportation Secretary's Action Plan on Bike and Pedestrian Safety

The new pedestrian and bicycle safety initiative will promote design               improvements to ensure safe and efficient routes for pedestrian and vehicle safety by drawing on current crash avoidance technologies to alert motorists to the presence of bicyclists and pedestrians.  Please see attached for a copy of the action plan.  If byway communities are interested in this effort, I would encourage them to work with their State department of transportation and/or their metropolitan planning organization.

Please note that there is no additional funding associated with this initiative.
