Dear NCC Friends and Colleagues,
As we move toward October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month we have a lot of great stories to share. Perhaps the most visible as you drive throughout the state is the new Breast Cancer Awareness License Plate which is now available in Nevada! Proceeds from the "Pink Ribbon" plate benefit the Mammovan mobile mammography van operated by Nevada Health Centers (NVHC). Each new plate sends $25 to the Mammovan, and yearly renewals provide $20 each. A mammogram costs $125 through the mobile service, meaning that for every five new "Pink Ribbon" plates registered another patient is screened. Those interested in procuring a valued low-numbered plate (0001 through 0100) can bid for one in an online auction hosted by NVHC from October 21 - 26. We're excited to see these plates on the road! Sincerely, Cari Herington, Executive Director

FDA Panel Clears Way for Approval of Perjeta in Early Stage Breast Cancer Treatment
From New York Times, September 12, 2013
A federal advisory committee recently cleared the way for the first approval of a cancer drug that would be used to treat patients before surgery to remove their tumors. The advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration voted 13 to 0, with one abstention, that Perjeta, a Genentech drug approved last year for late-stage breast cancer, could also be used at the disease's earliest stage. Such pre-surgery treatment might help make some inoperable tumors amenable to surgery, or make tumors small enough to allow for breast-conserving surgery rather than complete removal of the breast.

Breast Cancer Screening Survey & Focus Groups
After focusing on breast cancer screening rates and developing a statewide mammography and screening locations map, NCC intern and Masters in Public Health graduate student Charlotte Andreasen is taking her project a step further. Working with the University of Nevada Center for Program Evaluation she has developed an online survey and a schedule of focus groups to assess women's attitudes about breast cancer screening and learn more about why women may or may not get screened. Open to Nevada women over 40 with no history of cancer, the online survey is available here and has been open throughout September. The focus groups have brought together groups of 12 to 15 women each in rural communities including Carson City, Minden/Gardnerville and Elko, and additional groups are scheduled for Mesquite September 24 and Winnemucca October 2. Results from the survey will assist the NCC in developing programs and key messaging to increase screening rates throughout the state.
Regional Breast Cancer Meetings
Our Statewide Summit on Breast Cancer Screening & Treatment was a great start to our discussion on increasing breast cancer screening rates throughout the state and access to treatment. With many more questions still on the table, we are now focusing the conversation further with regional breast cancer meetings in Reno October 22 and in Las Vegas October 23. It's an opportunity for regional stakeholders to look at challenges, resources, ideas, and solutions for screening and treatment. We'll also present initial data from the survey and focus groups mentioned above. If you're interested in attending either regional discussion, please email Cari Herington.

Nutrition and Cancer Prevention Program Pilot Study
The University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno is conducting a pilot study tying together nutrition and cancer prevention and is seeking 20 participants for the 5 to 6 month study. The purpose of the study is to develop ways to easily assess a person's diet, activity and weight habits and provide tools and practical ideas to help them make lifestyle changes to potentially decrease their risk of getting cancer or having their cancer return.
The study is open to any person over 21 who has never had cancer or is now cancer-free. For more information or details on how to participate, contact Barbara Scott at the University of Nevada School of Medicine by email or by calling 775-784-1945.
