Dear NJSA Members and Friends:

We have just completed another successful year for the organization.  It was just over 2 years ago that your Board Members and other association leaders unveiled a strategic plan to revitalize the NJSA and to actively work to provide you with real value and real results to help you run your business more productively and more profitably.  Over the last year NJSA has:

  • Provided a wide range of educational programs including employment law, business and succession planning, bonding and insurance, prevailing wage issues, immigration law, and more.
  • Created a number of new business development opportunities including programs with Rutgers University and Princeton University as well as a Meet with GC's Night with more than 20 of the region's leading General Contractor firms in attendance.
  • Donated more than $2,000 worth of Toys to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program at our Annual Holiday Party.
  • Provided direct assistance to numerous member firms on a wide range of issues including permitting, prompt payment and other regulatory issues.
  • Continued to support our youth with two $2500 college scholarships for NJSA families.
  • Worked cooperatively with many other industry groups to best represent the interests of subcontractors.
  • Organized our most successful and well-attended golf outing in several years.
  • Recognized the important contributions of the Healthcare construction industry at our Annual Awards Dinner. This created an opportunity for more than 200 of our members to network directly with key construction staff at four major hospital systems.
  • Developed and Funded a Political Action Committee so that NJSA can actively support those policy leaders who understand and appreciate the value of the New Jersey construction industry and the NJ subcontracting community.
  • Actively lobbied for the best interests of the subcontracting community, over the past year, NJSA leaders have met regularly with policy leaders including Senior Staff in the Governor's office, Legislative Leaders, and Cabinet officials.  NJSA is now clearly recognized as a key player on policy issues which impact construction.  Among our successes was lobbying Governor Christie to veto legislation which would have allowed public entities to hire employees direct from union halls, eliminating the contractor from the process completely.

We appreciate your past support, and ask that if you see value in membership, please process your 2011/2012 dues promptly and please refer a colleague, competitor or vendor for membership.

As always, call me directly if the NJSA can ever be of assistance on any matter.  Our mission is to make you more productive and more profitable and to create a business environment where subcontractors can thrive.

irsIRS to Host Conference Call on 3% Withholding Issue

While the proposed 3% withholding tax on construction projects is scheduled to be delayed until January 2014, the IRS is actively seeking feedback on the issues and is also seeking to educate companies regarding the procedures and reporting requirements under this proposed regulation.  The IRS has scheduled two conference calls, one for August 4th and one for August 18th on this issue. For more details go to under Update and Q & A Session on IRC Section 3402 (t)- 3 Percent Withholding.

hardrockHard Rock Casino Announces Timeframe for Construction
Hard Rock International representatives recently announced that they plan to start construction on a new $275 million hotel and casino in late 2011 or early 2012.  The facility is made possible by a new State law, supported by NJSA, which allows for the construction of smaller scale casino properties. Previous law required 500 rooms for casino hotels, the new law allows for construction of facilities with a minimum of 200 rooms.  The Hard Rock plans 200 rooms and a 54,000 square ft. casino.
Recent Changes to State Tax Law Benefit Construction Community

Despite the protracted downturn in the New Jersey construction economy, there have been several amendments to state tax law which are beneficial to NJ Contractors.  NJSA Member firm Withum, Smith & Brown has prepared a brief article outlining these changes, you can read the full article here:
