Risdon Middle School Opens

What's that sound? The Timberwolves are officially home! The student body at the new Vera Risdon Middle School commemorated the first day of school with an inaugural group howl. See the video here.

Newcastle staff will conduct observations over the coming weeks to see how traffic is impacted with two schools now on 116th.

Road Alert: Golf Club Road Lane Closures Start Sept. 14

Drivers should prepare for lane closures on Newcastle Golf Club Road just east of the Coal Creek Family YMCA starting on Sept. 14 and continuing through Oct. 30.

For approximately one-quarter mile, the eastbound lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. When conditions permit, lanes in both directions may be open, however, most of the time, only one lane will be open. Traffic control flaggers will be on site to direct traffic.

Newcastle Honored for 2017 Budget Presentation

For the ninth consecutive year, the Government Finance Officers Association honored the Newcastle Finance Department with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

In order to receive the award, Newcastle had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device.

The award, which honors the city's fiscal year 2017 budget, is considered the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting.

Newcastle Commons Drive Officially Opens

Newcastle Commons Drive is officially complete and open to the public. The road, which goes through the  Newcastle Commons  community, connects Newcastle Golf Club Road and Coal Creek Parkway.
Work Starts on SE May Creek Park Drive Improvements

Construction crews along Southeast May Creek Park Drive are clearing way for a series of key pedestrian improvements along the Newcastle corridor.

Work to build a connection of sidewalks and bike lanes from Coal Creek Parkway to 129th Avenue Southeast began the week of Aug. 14.

Solar-Powered Stop Signs Installed on 116th

A total of five solar-powered blinking stop signs were installed along 116th Avenue Southeast before school started. 

You can find three of them at the intersection of 116th and Southeast May Creek Park Drive and two more on 116th at the intersection of Southeast 76th Street. These were installed in response to a high incidence of stop sign violations at those intersections.
City Hosts Fall Recycling Event

Newcastle residents will have the opportunity to dispose of recyclable materials at a city-sponsored collection event Sept. 16, 2017.

Bring unwanted batteries, styrofoam, cardboard, motor oil and more to  Hazelwood Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Certain types of household and hazardous wastes, such as house paint, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning products and fluorescent lights, will not be accepted.

Newcastle Police on Patrol

Newcastle Officer Steve Kajihiro was on patrol in the Milepost neighborhood this August when he spotted this "suspicious vehicle." The kids were issued junior deputy badge stickers!
