THIS WEEK'S SCRIPTURE READING

OLD TESTAMENT READING:
Isaiah 51:1-6

GOSPEL READING:
Matthew 16:13-20

During our Session meeting Monday evening, we decided that we are in serious need of a pre-school Sunday school class. This class would meet at the same time as our youth class each Sunday for about an hour beginning at 9:15 a.m.

If you are not involved in the choir and you feel that you have the skills to work with young children, I would urge you to pray about this and let me or Barb know if God is putting this on your heart. Also, if you are not able to commit to teaching every Sunday or even for a long period of time, please let one of us know that, too. Any offer f help would be greatly appreciated!

Blessings and Peace,
Pastor Rich

CANTON HEALTH CARE
Canton Health Care at North Market Street is one of Northminster's out-reach charities.

It is holding an "Antique / Old Car Show" on its parking lot on the evening of Thursday, September 21, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. for the enjoyment of their residents.
They have issued an invitation to anyone with such a car to bring it down for their show. Call Charlynn at 330.454.2152 for details.

Women from Northminster and Calvary go to Canton Health Care monthly and take cupcakes and beverages to celebrate the birthdays for that month. They also play BINGO so the people can choose a free gift for their birthdays or when they win. They can choose from the trays of items we bring that are useful or comforting to them. All clients are on Medicare and most have no families or kin at all.

WE REMEMBER
A year ago last Thursday, Bruce Swaffield passed from this life to eternal life. The following week, I stated that as a way of honoring Bruce's memory, I would be sharing devotions that he wrote each week in the newsletter for the next year. This week, I am sharing the last of these devotions.
I hope the past year has shown you what a talented writer Bruce was and how deeply he thought about the meaning of Christian discipleship. He continues to be missed by all of us who knew him and he always will be.

If you would like to continue reading Bruce's devotions, I will be donating a copy of his book, Devotions for Life , to the church library located in the parlor. This book serves as a constant reminder to me of just how blessed all of us were at Northminster to have this remarkable man among us, if only for a short time.

Blessings,
Pastor Rich
DEVOTION of the WEEK
 by Bruce Swaffield in Memoriam

MORE THAN CONQUERORS

At a funeral many years ago, the widow was greeting mourners with joy and happiness. She was helping friends and family accept the loss of her dear husband who had died days earlier from cancer. Now she was alone but her attitude remained the same; she was as cheerful as ever. It was easy to see God's presence and love flowing through this woman as she went from person to person.

Even during he greatest tragedies, we can be joyful because of who we are in Christ. Since we have placed our trust in him, he gives us his power and strength to conquer what might seem to be an impossible situation. Through Jesus, Peter was able to step out of the boat and walk on the water. Through Jesus, Paul was able to preach salvation to those he once persecuted. Through Jesus, Stephen was able to defend his faith to the Sanhedrin before he was stoned to death.

Unfortunately we often try to do too much on our own. We fail to let Jesus work in and through us. We attempt to overcome sorrow, grief, tribulation, and failure by ourselves. Even our best efforts fall short of giving us any satisfaction or relief. The reason is we are trying to defeat emotions and forces that are much more than we can handle. Jesus, however, is more than able to triumph over any kind of adversity or tragedy. Paul reminds of this fact in Romans 8:37: "In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."

Through Jesus, we are "more than conquerors." We can be happy in all things because his strength and love prevail in any tragedy.
