It's Not What, It's How and Who

By Julie Clemens, Director of Institutional Advancement

NDHSShield I have often heard our Principal, Ms. Gleason, say: "Ladies, we're practicing for life here. Is that how you should sit at the table?" And I have heard her reassure a few parents that they need not worry about their daughters: "She's not finished yet; she'll be a fine young woman." Perhaps Ms. Gleason has a crystal ball in which she can predict the future! More likely she has a deep faith supported by many years of experience which help to isolate situations from the long-term perspective.

At NDB we endeavor daily to live out the ideals and values that we share as a Catholic college preparatory school. It's not just about what we do, but more about how we educate your daughter. Sometimes living out these ideals means gently pushing your daughter to a new height of achievement; at other times we must allow your daughter to make her own mistakes. Occasionally a young woman will be held accountable for her actions; and always she will be compassionately supported to be the best she can be. Whether your daughter has met her "favorite" teacher who has now become a role model or she has become fully empowered to take control of her learning, we are on a continuous journey to transform the girls who enter our school into young women who will impact their communities. NDB girls leave an impression - it's as much about who they are, as what they do.

We hope that your experience concurs with our endeavors. If not, we trust that you will share with us the ways in which we can improve your daughter's experience at NDB. As the weeks pass and we move into the season of giving thanks and sharing, we hope that you will remember that NDB needs both your spiritual and financial support. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure are all integral to providing your daughter with the extraordinary experience that is NDB.

Community Mural Painting at NDB (Earn NDB Service Hours)
In the tradition of the Precita Eyes mural painters in San Francisco's Mission District, NDB students will collaboratively design and paint a mural together on the walls of NDB. Our 2012 mural may include the fence outside the pool area and an interior wall still to be determined. Lunch will be provided.

Law and Order
Students will experience the careers of FBI agents, SWAT, police officers, DEA, secret service, crime lab detectives, judges, and lawyers in this jam-packed 4 day course!  We will tour various departments, courtrooms, jails, and labs in the bay area.  You will learn how to cast fingerprints, search for and bag evidence, control a bomb detonating robot, see a trial in session, tour the SFPD Mission Station and see their gun vault, and much more!  Cost covers public transportation on one day and lunches on all four days.  Students MUST be able to drive themselves to and from 2 different locations on one day.  This course filled up quickly 2 years ago, so be among the first to sign up!

Disneyland and California Adventure
Do you like fun?  Me too!  Come spend two days at the Disneyland Resort.  One day will be spent at Disneyland and the other will be at California Adventure.  On our first night you will have a chance to experience a bonfire on Huntington Beach (weather and time permitting).  So grab your Mickey Mouse hats and come with us to the Happiest Place on Earth!  Please note the final cost may be lower depending on student enrollment.  Students will be responsible for spending money and food purchase.
