Fresh Start Focus

Helping A New DAIS Dawn

August 2013

Operation Fresh Start is spending few weeks working with Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) on their new shelter.  One great aspect about the Fresh Start program is disconnected youth help build and support our community.  We do that through conservation work, building affordable housing, and other community projects.

Our summer projects include the following:
  • Refurbishing Henry Vilas Zoo by painting miles of fencing, painting the entrance to the Ape House, clearing brush, and painting bathrooms;
  • Building garden sheds, tennis backboards, and equipment huts for Madison Metropolitan School District;
  • Building fishing piers, observation decks, trails and fence lines for Madison Parks Department; and
  • Helping DAIS reduce their capital costs for the new shelter.

We use these projects as an opportunity for our young people to learn about themselves and how they can be a positive part of our community.   Many of our young people at Operation Fresh Start have been affected by domestic violence in their homes.

Being part of building a new shelter helps them understand that there is a resource and that they have the ability to be part of the solution.  Empowered youth are no longer disconnected.  They feel the strength to complete their education and the ability to be a productive member of our community. My OFS Experience

Jesse Hackett, OFS Participant

I dropped out of high school to take care of my now 2 year-old son.  After ten weeks, I tried to find ways to finish my high school education.

I looked into enrolling in the GED/HSED program at Madison Area Technical College (MATC).  I also contacted the military service to see if there were any programs for people who wanted to join the military but didn't have the education.  Unfortunately neither of these options worked out.

Some friends of mine had attended Operation Fresh Start and they told me that OFS would give me the opportunity to learn construction skills while building affordable housing, earn my high school diploma, and earn money for college. OFS helps people like me get back on track.

I'm now in Operation Fresh Start and on a construction crew.  Since I've been here, they have helped me start my school work again, work on my job skills, and focus on my future so that I am ready to move on when I am done with my term.  After my term, I would like to continue to focus on school and attend Madison Area Technical College.  I am still looking into different career fields.  I am proud of what I have accomplished so far for myself and for my son.
