Pet Me - It's Worth It!
"We met an older lady, who was a bit nervous around Robbie but seemed really drawn to him. Eventually she tentatively petted him. After she did, she broke out into a big grin and told me that he was the first dog she ever petted! She has been scared of dogs her whole life!  She was super excited and said she couldn't wait to tell her family what she had done!  PAWS changes lives."

The Best Animal Therapy Nonprofits of the Year

We recently received notice that Healthline had published a list of the Best Animal Therapy Nonprofits and PAWS for People is on that list!

Here is what Healthline had to say:

"Our editors carefully selected the most compassionate, actionable, and effective nonprofits that aim to help those they serve to achieve health and well-being. We're glad to have you on the list!

"We've carefully selected these  animal therapy  nonprofits because they're actively working to educate, inspire, and support people while sharing the benefits of therapy animals.

"You don't have to be a pet owner or recipient of animal therapy to know the way animals can positively affect your life and mood.

"Therapy animals - including both  service animals and  emotional support animals - can be especially helpful to people who are differently abled, ill, living with mental health issues, or simply under significant amounts of stress.

"And there are many animal therapy nonprofit organizations dedicated to exploring and supporting the human-animal bond. They take animals into hospitals and nursing homes, and lead programs to train animals and their handlers. The lives affected by these organizations and the volunteers who represent them are countless, and we're enamored by both their cause and their dedication to it."

2018 American Humane Hero Dog Awards - Nominate Now!
Is your dog a hero?

Nominations for the 2018 American Humane Hero Dog Awards® are now open! The Hero Dog Awards are an annual competition that honors heroes on both ends of the leash: whether your dog is a courageous service dog, saves lives as a law enforcement dog, or just loves to greet you with a wagging tail at the end of a hard day, we want to hear your story. Submit a nomination for your dog in one of the seven categories (including therapy dog) and they could be featured on the Hallmark Channel next fall!

After two rounds of online public voting, the dog with the most votes in each category is announced and will be awarded $2,500 for their chosen charity partner. The third & final voting round determines the 2018 American Hero Dog, who will be announced live at the gala next September, receiving an additional $5,000 grant for their charity partner.

This year, PAWS for People is an official charity partner!

Nominations are open until February 7th. Nominate Your Hero Now >>
10 Simple and Fun Indoor Games for Dogs
By:  Jen Gabbard

" It's that time of year again for many of us - dark when we wake up and dark by the time we get home. With shorter days it's definitely more of a challenge to keep our dogs fit and active, but with a little bit of creativity you can do a lot of fun exercises indoors. Here're 10 simple & fun indoor games that I love to play when we can't get outside. They help keep my dog happy, entertained and best of all they prevent boredom. And I have to admit - I think they're pretty fun as well."    Read more >>

Shining Stars
Dawn Kisner, Kate, & Riley
Dawn joined PAWS in February 2017 with her adorably sweet Goldendoodle, Kate. After falling in love with the joys of pet therapy, Dawn also certified Kate's sister, a Yellow Lab named Riley. They have visited at Cadia Rehab Capitol and Union Hospital. As a PAWS for Reading team, they visit at Appoquiniminck Library and Star Hill Elementary School. Dawn, Kate, and Riley also enjoy PAWS' many community events. What a fantastic team!

Carol Lutrell & Araby
Carol and Araby joined PAWS in June of 2015. When Carol was told that her sweet, black Cocker Spaniel, Araby, would be a perfect therapy dog, she got her certified. Araby's calm and affectionate demeanor makes her a natural therapy dog. This Advanced team has visited with Sunrise of Wilmington and St. Francis Healthcare. As a PAWS for Reading team, they visit with Kirkwood Library, Highlands Elementary, Helen Kate Furness Library, Christ Church Preschool, and Brandywine Hundred Library. What a great team!
