Making Someone's Day
Ruth Wuenschel and her therapy companion, Chloe, recently provided PAWS for Reading sessions at the Please Touch Museum with Amy Celona and Wesley. Ruth e-mailed the office to share a bit about the visit.

"The mom of a boy with Autism said her son was afraid of dogs and hadn't touched one in a year. BUT, he relaxed and pet Chloe! The mom was elated! It made the whole trip to Philly worthwhile. So glad to make someone's day!"

Thanks so much for sharing, Ruth!

2018 Hero Dog Awards - Nominate by February 7th!
Is your dog a hero?

Nominations for the 2018 American Humane Hero Dog Awards® are now open! The Hero Dog Awards are an annual competition that honors heroes on both ends of the leash: whether your dog is a courageous service dog, saves lives as a law enforcement dog, or just loves to greet you with a wagging tail at the end of a hard day, we want to hear your story. Submit a nomination for your dog in one of the seven categories (including therapy dog) and they could be featured on the Hallmark Channel next fall!

After two rounds of online public voting, the dog with the most votes in each category is announced and will be awarded $2,500 for their chosen charity partner. The third & final voting round determines the 2018 American Hero Dog, who will be announced live at the gala next September, receiving an additional $5,000 grant for their charity partner.

This year, PAWS for People is an official charity partner!

Nominations are open until February 7th. Nominate Your Hero Now >>
Want to live longer? Get a dog!
By Victoria Larned, CNN

"The benefits that come with owning a dog are clear-- physical activity, support, companionship -- but owning a dog could literally be saving your life.

"Dog ownership is associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and death, finds a new Swedish  study published Friday in the journal Scientific Reports.

"For people living alone, owning a dog can decrease their risk of death by 33% and their risk of cardiovascular related death by 36%, when compared to single individuals without a pet, according to the study. Chances of a heart attack were also found to be 11% lower."  Read More>>

PAWS at Peace
Pictured here are the lovely flowers that Kathy Potts received from PAWS in honor of her Keely.  The PAWS' PAWS at Peace program hopes to support our bereaved members and let them know how much their pet's service was appreciated.
