Amphitheater Construction Project Update

The unexpected snow this past weekend has heightened urgency to complete the construction of the amphitheater. The work is drawing to a close as the contractors have indicated that the substantial completion date is scheduled for Tuesday, November 16th.

This means that all major work will be completed. However, planting will wait until

spring to give optimal options in our selection of plants and greenery.

At this time of year, the nurseries have less for us to choose from.

We will also keep the amphitheater access closed until the spring.  The newly-

laid concrete needs to remain free of salt and sand this first winter so

it will not serve as a pathway between the buildings.  The plan is for the

playground to be open for our kindergarten students after we return from

the Thanksgiving holiday.

If you have not yet had a chance to see the transformation of this space

over the last weeks, please ask your child to describe what the process

has been like.  Almost every class has had an opportunity to observe the

construction and witness the changes when they go to art class or while in

the cafeteria during lunch.

I want to take this time to thank the students of 2H and their teacher,

Ms. Humphrey, for their patience as we have rerouted classes from the Historical Building through the tunnel and the 2H classroom during the pouring of concrete.

I am very pleased to also report that our 7th and 8th graders have shown their best community selves during these times when their routes to class have been adjusted.

A big thank you also goes to the 7/8 teachers for escorting our older students

between their classes.

Thank you all for working collaboratively to make this process as smooth

as possible.

Pipier Smith-Mumford, Ph. D.

Principal

PIERCE PTO MEETS WITH SUPERINTENDENT LUPINI

Every month, PTOs from all Brookline public schools participate in a meeting with Superintendent Bill Lupini.

Pierce PTO is committed to communication and transparency and will be summarizing these meetings on our web site. (http://piercepto.weebly.com/index.html)

Today's meeting  addressed:

1. Steps to Success, a comprehensive school and community-based initiative that helps low income students succeed in school and make college a reality, and B-PEN, the Brookline Parent Education Network, which provides parent resources for grades 6- 12.

 2. PTO Funding Guidelines: the group discussed appropriate guidelines for PTO spending. Currently, the guidelines from the Town are being updated. This conversation is helping us as we review our own budget expenditures and fund raising.

3.PTO Insurance: Pierce PTO has purchased general liability insurance for this year per advice of town counsel and our attorney. Previously, event insurance had been purchased for one-time events, such as the auction.

Please feel free to follow up with any questions, comments or feedback to piercepto@gmail.com.

THANKS TO PTO BUDGET PARTICIPANTS

Many of you offered helpful feedback regarding PTO spending priorities. A consensus emerged for the PTO to continue supporting academic enrichment activities; to underwrite cultural presentations which supplement curriculum and enhance the school's efforts to build community; and to partially subsidize field trips.

The PTO budget will focus on more fully-funding these activities and will reduce spending on other efforts that do not benefit the largest number of students. The Co-Chairs continue to welcome parent feedback on this topic. Won't you make your voice heard?

The PTO budget will be posted on the web site. The Pierce Annual Appeal will be coming out shortly, an important fundraising effort for the PTO's activities year round. Look for it in your child's home/school folder this week. Thanks!

Due November 17

The owner of the Number Line Hotel is renovating and wants to put new room

numbers on all of the rooms. She is making a list of how many of each digit she

How many of each digit does she need to buy in order to label all 99 rooms?

Show your work using number, pictures, a table, and/ or words.

Hint: You need to find out how many 1's she will need to buy, how many 2's and so on.

NATIONAL FOOD DAY A SUCCESS

Did you know that last Monday, October 24th, was the first National Food Day?

The Brookline Department of Public Health spread the word about the Harvard School of Public Health's new "Healthy Eating Plate." Check out the bulletin board in Pierce School cafeteria!

Pierce students had an opportunity to try vegetarian moussaka for the school lunch, drink some cider from the Allandale Farm in front of the Town Hall;

learn about healthy foods from Savory Living owner/chef Sue R. Levy; see the projection of the Food Day School Curriculum: Helping Youth Eat Real. Check out the beautiful pictures and the eye opening, easy-to-read comparisons at foodday.org.

Greening Cities: What Can Brookline Learn from the European Experience?

Monday, Nov. 14, 7-9 pm, Town Hall, Room 101.

Ever been to a "green" European city, where there are more compact urban centers, more biking and walking, and fewer cars? Entire areas are closed off to traffic. There are are greener building codes, more developed public transportation, and more integrated regional planning.

Climate Change Action Brookline presents two distinguished European speakers, as well as panelists from Brookline, to describe changes European cities are making and discuss measures and obstacles for going greener in Brookline.

Find out what Brookline is doing and explore where we go from here. Light refreshments will be served.
