Speaking the Truth in Love

Have some of your friends and acquaintances become your enemy because you told them the truth?  This is a common experience for those who faithfully share the Gospel of God with victims of deception. We need to recognize that the Gospel is offensive to those who are offensive to God. This is because before anyone can see the Gospel as "good news" they must first see themselves as guilty sinners under the condemnation of a holy God. Others may be offended because they have embraced a works righteousness salvation where they can boast in their religious works. The Gospel of grace strips people of their own righteousness and calls them to trust in an alien righteousness (Rom. 5:17; 10:1-4). The Gospel is also offensive because it declares there is only one way to be saved and that is through the substitutionary atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ. No one can be saved until they come to the cross with empty hands of faith, bringing nothing but their sins. Since we know the Gospel will be offensive to unbelievers, we must avoid adding to the offense by the way we present the message. Friendly relationships can be maintained when we share the Gospel with love, compassion, humility and patience.

The apostle Paul asked the members of the church in Galatia who had succumbed to the heresy of the Judaizers, "Have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?" (Gal. 4:16). The Galatians were offended because the truth exposed the error they had embraced. Paul was concerned that they had been influenced by the false gospel of the Judaizers and had begun to doubt the truth of salvation by grace alone (Gal. 5:2-4).

People, who are on the broad "way that seems right to man" will be offended when we tell them it leads to eternal separation from God (Prov. 14:12). Knowing that the Gospel will be offensive to religiously proud people, we must speak the truth in love. In the past I have told friends that I love them so much that I need to share the greatest news they will ever hear. It is about the greatest gift you could ever receive. After I am finished, I let them know that what they do with the Gospel message is between them and God. It is "good news" only if they receive the gift. If they reject the gift, the "good news" will haunt them throughout all eternity because they refused God's gracious offer of forgiveness and reconciliation. Some of those who have rejected the gift still remain my friends because they know I approached them in the spirit of love. It is tragic when our loved ones reject the Gospel but "let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary" (Gal. 6:9). If you would like to become more faithful in your obedience to our Lord's great commission this message may encourage you. For the Gospel of grace, Mike

Pope Calls for Unity for the Sake of Missions
Pope Benedict said, "The scandal of division that undermines missionary activity was the impulse under which began the ecumenical movement that we know today. The full and visible communion among Christians is to be understood, in fact, as a fundamental characteristic of ever clearer witness. While we are on the path towards full unity, it is necessary that all Christ's disciples pursue practical cooperation for the sake of passing on the faith to the contemporary world. Read more.

Cardinal Koch said, "The New Evangelization must have an ecumenical dimension, because it's obvious that in Jesus' priestly prayer He prayed that all would be one, so that the world would believe. The credibility of the proclamation of the Gospel depends on the unity of the Church." Read more.

Editor's note: Since the Gospel divides Evangelicals from Catholics, we wonder how the pope can call for unity for the purpose of missionary activity. Which Gospel does the pope want to proclaim for a clearer witness for Christ? His gospel of works-righteousness that condemns him and his clergy or the Gospel of grace that has the power to save sinners? (Gal. 1:6-9; Rom. 1:16). We can only wonder how many evangelicals will respond favorably to the call of the pope and embrace Roman Catholicism as a valid expression of Christianity. After all - what fellowship has light with darkness or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? (2 Cor. 6:14-15)
Millions Seek to Touch Statue of Jesus
Millions of Catholic devotees swept through the Philippine capital on Wednesday in a spectacular show of passion for a centuries-old statue of Jesus Christ that many believe holds miraculous powers. In the nation's biggest annual religious gathering, barefoot men and women crammed into Manila's streets hoping to touch the life-sized, black icon as it was paraded through the city's historic area. Nine million pilgrims joined the procession as the icon went on its 10-hour journey through the streets. Read more.
Letters from Around the World
Letters
Dear Jason, As you depart for Dallas, I wanted to share with you the Divine moment you were a part of this morning and the affect you had on two Catholics. I converted to Catholicism 14 years ago for my husband - a cradle catholic. In 2011, I made the decision to leave the catholic church but my husband wasn't in agreement. It has been a struggle and we have had many arguments over the subject but the Lord is now opening up his heart to attend Grace Community Church with me and today was his first day. Why today of all days? I truly believe because our Lord knew he needed to hear your message. You're message is straight on and exactly where it needs to be. So thank you for that. We have a long way to go in our home - first I need to get my husband to open the Bible other than when I or my children do. However, I now have hope after hearing your message and the presence of God's Divine hand. I can't tell you how much you blessed me and my family today. S.C.

Mr. Gendron, I sincerely hope that you are just plain stupid. I'm referring to the distortions you print in your newsletter. You're not fooling any Catholic that has a true faith in Christ, only those who never had one to start with. Your master, Satan, is very pleased with your efforts. He has a reward waiting for all those who work for him! I'm still praying that you will be saved...but it can happen only through the most precious of all pearls..the Catholic Church! I pray for your eyes to be opened, don't leave your conversion until it's too late. Janet, Internet

Mike, I think you are well-motivated but on the wrong track. Only one church is the true church--perpetual, apostolic and Catholic. Read Faith of our Fathers by Gibbons and come back home where you can have some real impact. John B., Internet

John, Your church councils have twice put the Bible on the list of forbidden books and it rejects the substitutionary atonement of Christ which is the principle doctrine of the Gospel. The one true Church is composed of all who are born-again of the Holy Spirit. They all possess "repentance towards God, faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ." They all build upon one foundation which is the Lord Jesus, not Peter (1 Cor. 3:11). Every member has been adopted into the family of God and their names are written in heaven (Rom. 8:15; Heb. 12:23). This is the only Church of which no one member can perish, they are safe for all eternity; they are never cast away (John 6:37-39). The election of God the Father, the continual intercession of God the Son, the sanctifying power of God the Holy Spirit protect all who have been divinely chosen (Eph. 1). Not one sheep of Christ's flock shall ever be plucked out of His hand (John 10:28). May God grant you repentance so that you can become a member of The Lord's Church.

Dear Brother Mike,
I am so blessed by your ministry! It is such an important task to educate and warn what Catholicism teaches and to reach out to those ensnared by their doctrines. In Sweden (as in USA and the rest of the world) the "Ecumenical movement" is spreading like wildfire. It is heartbreaking to see how denominational leaders seek ways to cooperate and unite with Rome. I have, many times, linked to your website and your teachings on the internet to warn my Christian brothers and sisters in Sweden and the USA! Thank you for having a servant's heart! Karin J., Sweden
Baptism Unites Catholics and Protestants
Leaders from the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant denominations have signed an agreement to recognize each other's baptisms. The document states: "We rejoice at the common faith we share...together we affirm that, by the sacrament of Baptism, a person is truly incorporated into the body of Christ. Baptism establishes the bond of unity existing among all who are part of Christ's body and is therefore the sacramental basis for our efforts to move towards visible unity." Read more.
A Note from Jason Hauser
Thank you so very much for the many warm messages you sent welcoming me to the ministry of Proclaiming the Gospel. I am both humbled and awed by the many prayers that have been lifted up for me. In Ephesians 4:11-14, Paul notes that the work of an evangelist is also to "equip the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up the body of Christ." He goes on to say that we are to invest in building up the body of Christ "so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes." In light of that, what an incredible encouragement it has been for me to see the body of Christ at work throughout the world. Many of you, in different countries, have reached out and ministered to me with your e-mails. Even the e-mails I received from Catholics, many of which challenged the Gospel of grace, are a vivid reminder of the importance of this ministry. All of this is a great motivation for us as we seek to edify the saints and exhort one another in Christ to evangelize the lost. I look forward to serving you and getting to know you better. It will be a joy to share what the Lord continues to do through this ministry as we faithfully make His last command our greatest concern. Till the nets are full, Jason
What if Jesus Really Meant What He Said?
Tony Campolo and Shane Clairborne have some strange things to say in their new book, "Red Letter Revolution: What if Jesus Really Meant What He Said?" Campolo misrepresents the text of Hebrews 6:4-6 and butchers its interpretation. He said, "The writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that when we sin, we crucify Jesus anew (6:4-6). We are constantly crucifying him every time we sin. There is no passage of time with God. Like the speed of light, all of time for God is compressed into a simultaneous moment. Thus when we sin, in his eternal now, the Christ on the cross absorbs our sin into his own body and experiences the same agony as he did 2,000 years ago."
Mary to Convert Muslims to Catholicism?
The late Roman Catholic Bishop Fulton Sheen believed Muslims would be converted to Catholicism through the veneration of Mary, the Mother of God. In his 1952 book, The World's First Love, this was his line of argument: The Koran has many passages concerning the Blessed Virgin. The Koran believes in her Immaculate Conception and her Virgin Birth. Sheen said missionaries to the Moslems will be successful in the measure that they preach Our Lady of Fatima. Because the Moslems have a devotion to Mary, our missionaries should be satisfied merely to expand and to develop that devotion.
