Dear TST Families,

Shana Tova U'Metukah! Wishing you all a sweet and fulfilling New Year! We welcome back all our returning families and welcome our new families with open arms and hearts.  Our opening tefilah (community prayer) was filled with high spirits, uplifiting song, reflection and a taste of the wonderful opportunities that lay ahead of the Temple Shir Tikva Community! All of our classes began with community building activities.

We are embracing our TST educational vision, as articulated so beautifully by our School Committee:
Making Mensches: connecting students to one another, the TST community and the Jewish world through education, tikkun olam (acts of kindness to repair the world) and social programs.

All of your child's teachers are reaching out to you via an introductory email, and a personal phone call, to get to know you and your child.  You will also receive regular reports on what is going on in class by clicking on your class link on the right hand side of this newsletter.

Our first Wednesday of religious school for grades 3-6, will be this Wednesday September 27, 3:45-5:45. This Wednesday (unlike our regular pattern) students will begin at 3:45 in their homerooms, and we will end the day with tefilah (community prayer) from 5:15-5:45. New students will receive their tefilah team assignments from their teachers during class. We are planning to buddy up our experienced 6th graders with 3rd graders, who are new to their tefilah teams. We will have them come down to the sanctuary and find their seats next to each other in their tefilah team spaces, before the whole "crowd" comes in. Our sixth graders will help the third graders to follow along and participate in the service. New students in grades 4 and 5 will buddy up with classmates on their tefilah teams, as well.  We will dismiss this Wednesday from the sanctuary to our lobby. Teachers of each grade will wait with children in the lobby for parent pickup.

This coming Sunday will be our first Sababa Sunday. Students in grades 2-6 begin in the sanctuary. Parents please join us! Grades 3-5 will then participate in special chuggim (electives) including: Caring Cards, Games with a Jewish Twist, Communicating Jewishly through Sign Language, Jewish music, and IDF: Israeli army training!
Grade 6 will begin their monthly Moving Traditions Groups: Rosh Hodesh ( for girls) and Shevet Achim (for boys). This experiential education program helps teen boys and girls explore two primary questions: "What does it mean to be a man/woman?" and "What does it mean to be a mensch?" Kids tell us that the experience offers them a more "honest," "relevant," and "cool" way to participate in the Jewish community.

Remember: There is no religious school on Wednesday, October 4 (the eve of Sukkot), Sunday, October 8th(Columbus Day Weekend) or Wednesday, October 11th ( the eve of Shmini Atzeret). We look forward to seeing grades K-6 on Sunday October 15.
