January 9, 2018 /22 Tevet 5778
Dear TST Families,

An extra crisp, sunny day and mounds of glistening white snow greeted us as we joined together at the temple for the first Sababa Sunday of 2018. Grades 2-6 families joined in song and prayer..Leah King Kaufman, Senior Regional Director of Youth Engagement,NFTY Northeast and URJ Eisner Camp joined us  for a lively presentation on our partner URJ Camps Eisner, Crane Lake and Sci Tech Academy. Please be in touch with me or Rabbi Danny  for scholarship opportunities available through our temple.

We also focused our intentions on sharing our Shir Tikva home for the next two weeks with those who live with us from Family Promise. Shir Tikva is honored to participate in Family Promise, a community response system where host congregations and volunteers provide safe temporary shelter and meals on a rotating basis, while professional staff assist families in reaching goals that end the cycle of homelessness. Students spent time in tefilah and in classes learning about our mitzvah and preparing for our guests - making cards and welcoming posters. The kindergarten made yummy granola bars. Grade 3-6 packed up their classroom materials and books so they could be moved to their "transient homes" in other temple spaces, so our guest families could live there.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 10, our grades 3-6 students will participate in a special program on hunger, during religious school. We will begin the day (before tefilah) with students joining in the atrium and lobby to eat their snacks (which they bring from home- please remember to follow our approved snack list, for the safety of all students). We will follow with tefilah and an assembly to learn about hunger and homelessness. Students will watch a part of the documentary movie "A Place at the Table." Several 7th grade students will make a presentation on foster care, which they have been working on in their AISH " Mitzvah Club" elective, thus teaching and modeling the importance of the mitzvah of social action advocacy for our younger students. We will introduce Lovin'Spoonfuls , the organization that gathers "extra" food from markets and stores for those in need. At 5:15, students will gather by homerooms in the social hall to collectively make 200 sandwiches for Lovin'Spoonfuls to distribute to those in need.  We will not be using any peanut products but we would be happy to give a special non-food assignment to any child who should not handle food (for allergy or other reasons) even with plastic gloves on, which will be provided. Please be in touch with me to let me know, so I can be sure to accommodate all needs.

Pick up for all students will be in Social Hall A.

Parents - I invite you join us for any or all parts of the assembly (4:20-5:15), and/or the sandwich making. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to set up (before 5:15) and/or help the students fulfill this mitzvah.
