LIVE WEATHER STATION

BEACHFRONT

Welcome to February - Even if the weather makes it seem more like June. Temperatures in the 70's and 80's. Really? After spending a week in Minnesota earlier this month with wind chill temps down to -37F, I'll take it! In fact, we really haven't had much of a winter at all this year so far. And, that's just fine by me too. March will be here before you know it and then even the chance of cold weather will pretty much go away for several months. What a great place to live.

It seems that the whales have taken their time getting to our area this year, maybe because of the lack of cold weather as well. There have been some sightings but so far, not nearly as many as last year had by this time. Most of our experienced captains are saying that they are still coming and that it isn't that unusual for them to start showing up in greater numbers in February, so hopefully, we'll start seeing more and more in the weeks to come.

I want to give one more big Thank You to everyone who supported our Food Drive again during the past holiday season. My kids and I picked up all the boxes, bags, and stacks of food early last month and we delivered it all, unannounced, to the Casa Hogar, home for the elderly. It was a super nice surprise and we were warmly welcomed by residents and staff who helped unload the truck into the kitchen and storage area. Doing good things just feels good and I love to share those experiences with my kids whenever I can.

This month brings the Superbowl and Valentines Day and there are always a ton of places to go around town to celebrate and enjoy them. Our very own Sonoran Sky will be pulling out all the stops and I recommend spending the events right here with us. La Cantina Sports Bar will have food and drink specials before, during, and after the big game and the Sonoran Sky Restaurant will have a special menu and romantic night ready for your Valentines Day celebration. Let me know if you need more information and I will point you in the right direction.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full-time for about 10 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Sonoran Resorts Once Again Co-Sponsors at Hugely Successful Barrett-Jackson Car Show and Auction

Barrett-Jackson's 2018 Scottsdale auction was without a doubt an incredible success for the company, the bidders, consignors, guests, and the charities who benefited from the sales of many of the lots. After everything was said and done, 1,721 cars were sold for more than $106.8 million, with a sell-through rate of 99.1 percent. What's more, an additional $6.21 million was raised by charity vehicles like the pair of Corvettes, Ford GT and first 2019 Bullitt Mustang.

The cars were amazing and there were also some famous personalities at the event. Former President George W. Bush attended the event and stood on the block during the auction of the 2018 Corvette Carbon 65 Edition. Other celebrities included Jay Leno, Michael Phelps, Kenny Chesney, David Spade, Tim Allen, Alice Cooper, Bruce Arians, Alan Williams, Archie Bradley and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. It was, without a doubt, a star-studded event.

Former President George W. Bush at the podium

Being such a coveted event, our very own Sonoran Resorts Sales Group attended in full-force again this year to promote our condo listings and spread the word all about Puerto Penasco and Sonoran Resorts. The reception that our Agents received at the event was overwhelmingly positive and there is no doubt that Rocky Point will have several new loyal visitors and owners because of our presence there.

Just down from our display, some impressive vehicles lined up next to each other were a Koenigsegg CCX (iLusso), Lamborghini Centenario (McLaren Scottsdale), and Pagani Huayra (Pagani Newport Beach)... and that wasn't all. Joining this trio were a number of other cars as well, including a Starke Speedster, Bruiser Conversions' Jeep, Airstream Sprinter, Porsche 911 GT3 RS (iLusso), Bentley Continental GT Speed (Lexani x Wheel Specialists Inc.), two Vanderhall Venice cars, Corvette Carbon 65 Edition with Callaway supercharger kit (Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Valley), and a Land Rover Defender (Fusion Luxury Motors).

"We're so thankful for the entire collector car community and everyone who joined together to create so many signature Barrett-Jackson moments on the block this week," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. "Many records were set as No Reserve vehicles continue to attract strong bidding, and our automobilia sales were the most impressive yet. It was an honor to host former President George W. Bush on our auction block - another Barrett-Jackson first - along with Chad McQueen on the 50th anniversary of his father's famous film, 'Bullitt.' While every year is special at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, this one truly stands out."

Building Bright Futures for Puerto Penasco Families

Building Bright Futures for Puerto Penasco Families (BBF) is building a holistic system that supports families' in building their own bright future:  educationally, economically, physically, spiritually and emotionally.

BBF is in the process of building a strong, effective, coordinated community support system that supports the families' capacity to establish and sustain success.  Current community supports are being identified and needed services are being developed as a part of an easily accessible system.

BBF is ready to kick off this system with the building of homes.  Build Homes, Change Lives, that is the motto of Dwellings, a US based non-profit that has been building homes throughout Latin America since 2008. As a ministry of Alternative Missions, Dwellings has been committed to meeting the physical needs of families by providing homes and hope for the poor and disenfranchised.

Ministry founder, Tom Hackett has been working in the non-profit sector for over 30 years. In that time, he has constructed schools, medical and dental clinics, churches and houses in various locations. In 2008 he began Dwellings in the small community of Cofradia De Coyutlan, Nayarit, Mexico, where he had been serving for more than 10 years. From there, he began recruiting short term teams to help build homes in Roatan, Honduras. In the past 10 years, Dwellings has built more than 130 homes in 3 countries.

In 2017, Dwellings began looking for new opportunities to provide homes in Mexico. Through a partnership with Puerto Penasco residents, Gene Huddle and Jane Hammond, as well as Alive Christian Fellowship Church in Tucson, Arizona, Dwellings was invited to come and see the needs first hand in Puerto Peñasco. Together, they developed a plan help build bright futures for local residents in the community.

The plan calls for a 6-step process as follows:

  1. Profiles of families are developed and communicated.
  2. Groups of people from places of worship, businesses, social clubs and other community organizations select a family they want to build a house for.
  3. The sponsoring organization for building the home commits to collecting the finances needed to build the house on a piece of land that the family owns or buys.
  4. A team from that sponsoring group comes to work with the family to build the home.
  5. Once a family has been selected, a more comprehensive analysis is done of the needs of the family to build their capacity.  The services and supports are identified and the appropriate, coordinated services are provided.
  6. A 3-5 year process is developed around the family's needs to build their capacity.

Through contacts with local leaders and interviews with potential home recipients, a list of families are being compiled with bios that they will share with donors/volunteers. These bios will be shared through their website,  www.DwellingsNow.com as well as direct, with longstanding ministry partners. Teams of volunteers, (ranging in size from 5 - 10 or more) will raise the funds needed to provide a home. These teams will then travel to Puerto Peñasco and spend a week, building a long-term permanent home for the designated family. These homes will be approximately 600 sq ft and boast 2 bedrooms, a full bathroom, kitchen, living room, as well as outdoor living areas. Teams will have the option of building specific add-ons for each home as well.

Currently, BBF is seeking individuals interested in partnering with them to facilitate these future builds. The current plan is to complete their first build this May, with future builds to happen quickly thereafter. There is much to be accomplished and they need your help. If you'd like to learn more about their history, vision and process, log on to www.DwellingsNow.com/mexico/ and fill out the "Want to know more" form.

BBF and Dwellings are excited to begin providing homes and a bright future for families in Puerto Peñasco, but they still need your help. There's an African proverb that states, "If you want to go fast, go alone; If you want to go far, go together". Together we can build homes and change lives.

January Jam Soars to New Heights

The 10th Anniversary of Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers' January Jam, recently held over MLK Weekend, brought together three blistering nights of rock, a giant birthday party, fireworks, a sunset beach bash, a tequila inspired golf tournament and record charitable donations for the City of Puerto Penasco.

"January Jam was the best birthday weekend of my life," wrote Roger Clyne on the band's social media pages.  The party started Friday evening on the patio at JJ's Cantina where the band played Turbo Ocho, their only album recorded in Choya Bay in its entirety to celebrate the 10th anniversary.  Following the eight day recording session in 2008, the band decided to announce a patio show at JJ's and see if anybody would come.  A few hundred drove down and January Jam has become a tradition ever since.

The annual Mexican Moonshine Tequila Golf Classic teed off at 10am Saturday morning to a record number of 88 golfers at The Links at Las Palomas.  Each year an amazing raffle is organized to complement the fundraising efforts of the golf tournament with a record amount of money raised that will be included in Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers' annual donation back to the City of Puerto Penasco.  Beneficiaries include scholarship programs through D.I.F., La Casa de Esperanza, Men's and Women's shelters, and the Tourism Assistance Unit among others.

Banditos hosted night two with The Johnson Twins, Bro and Walt Richardson opening the show for RCPM.  Several hundred packed the parking lot and patios with birds eye views of the stage where RCPM played everybody's favorites until after midnight.  Jim Dalton brought blurry visioned loyalists back for Bloody Marias Sunday morning for his solo series dubbed Borracho Domingo.  The party finished Sunday afternoon on the beach at Wrecked at The Reef where a sold out crowd was not only treated to an extended set with a surprise appearance by The Black Moods, but one of the most amazing sunsets ever.  Roger even stopped the show to pay homage.

Organizers would like to thank RPR Mexico, Las Palomas Resort and The Links at Las Palomas, The Sonoran Resorts, Penasco Luxury, JJ's Cantina, Banditos, Wrecked at The Reef, Rocky Point 360, Ammex Insurance, Sanderson Ford and the City of Puerto Penasco for supporting such an amazing weekend.

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers now turn their attention to Circus Mexicus, a four day celebration being held June 7-10, 2018 throughout Puerto Penasco.  Circus Mexicus has become one of the largest 100% band produced music festivals in North America attracting visitors annually from as many as 36 states and 5 countries.

Line up and ticket on sale dates will be announced in early March.  The festival will expand the number of venues holding events this year in part to show visitors more of what Puerto Penasco has to offer.  Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers will headline both Friday and Saturday nights supported by other bands playing various types of music.

VIP tickets are expected to sell out first as they do each year.  Fans are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance at www.circusmexicus.net and book their accommodations through RPRMexico.com, LasPalomasResort.net, PenascoLuxury.com or any of the other sites booking other parts of the city including Las Conchas and Choya Bay.

Young Life to Host Third Annual Red Carpet Gala

In three short years, YOUNG LIFE'S RED CARPET GALA has established itself as one of the premier events on Puerto Penasco's social calendar.  According to Alberto and Loly Martinez, Young Life Area Directors, this year's Gala will be held on SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018 with doors opening at 7:00 PM. The ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT will, once again, be held at Penasco's beautiful CONVENTION CENTER.  Borrowing a "page right out of Hollywood", arriving guests will be treated to a Red Carpet walk complete with "Paparazzi" and flashing cameras!  The dress-up, semi-formal affair includes a full-course gourmet dinner prepared by Jerry's Catering and a night of dancing and musical entertainment by Penasco's favorite band, AQUA DE COCO.  Best of all, admission to the event is only $25 U.S. ($450 MX) per guest...a real bargain for a full "night-out-on-the-town"!

YOUNG LIFE PENASCO is currently celebrating it's 11th year serving the youth of our community.  The local chapter was the very first one formed in Mexico and it is part of Young Life International now working with more than 2 million kids in 99 countries across the globe.  Founded 77 years ago, the faith-based organization's main goal is to help navigate young people (teenagers and college students) through the many life-changing decisions they are faced with on the way to adulthood.  Rather than boring the kids with a lot of "Thou Shalt Nots", Young Life group leaders meet with the kids on their level and mentor them on the importance of getting a good education, developing healthy relationships and making the right decisions when temptations come their way.  This is accomplished by establishing local "clubs" where kids gather and socialize on a weekly basis as well as annual out-of-town camps where sports, games, fun and laughter abound.

Here in Puerto Penasco, Young Life is currently helping 150 "at-risk" teens at 3 "clubs" across town.  The RED CARPET GALA is held each year to provide funding for the weekly club meetings and for the kids to attend camp each summer.  For most of the kids, their week at camp is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure where new social skills are developed and life-long friendships are formed.  But, it only works through the power of prayer and people who are generous with their time and resources...people who understand that an investment in our kids and their future is one of the best investments we can ever make.

For reservations and ticket information, please contact Reyna Molina at (638) 105-8799 or (602) 884-5969.  Gala tickets may be purchased at the office of Re/Max Legacy located at the intersection of Blvd. Freemont and Blvd. Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez.
Esperanza por los Ninos to Celebrate Day of the Child

The Day of the Child, a National holiday here in Mexico, is celebrated each Spring on April 30th.  This holiday is special for all children as we celebrate their joy, happiness, lives and spirits!  For the last three year, Friends of Esperanza , have been embracing the children of Esperanza Por  los Niños Children home here in Rocky Point by having a Beach party fundraiser! Volunteers, friends and family have united to ensure each of these children are made to feel special by enjoying a days activities of fun and sun on Sandy Beach, while raising money to assist the children and mission throughout the year. April 29, 2018, will mark the third year the, Day of the Child Fundraiser,  event will take place for Esperanza Por Los Niños!

Esperanza means hope, and the Esperanza children's home located 18 miles out of town is the hope for many children whom are left without parents to care for them. These children live with two set of missionary families in a complex located 15 miles north of Rocky Point and about 3 miles off of the main highway. You might recognize the sign which leads down a dirt road to the facility that houses anywhere between 25-50 children.

The children reside at Esperanza, but go to school in Rocky Point and participate in the local Puerto Penasco community. Their ages range from 3-21 and their needs are as varied as you can imagine. Many of them have lived through very difficult challenges and situations. These children are not adoptable because they have not been legally severed from their families. They each live in the I hope that one day their family will return to bring them home.

This year we will be celebrating the Day of the Child, at Sandy Beach, in front of the Sonoran Sky resort, from 2-6 pm on April 29th. There will be games, food, fun, and Fundraising going on! All the children will participate in beach games, prizes and competitions! Volunteers will help with games, food prep, awards and raffles.  We are looking for local support for prizes, donations, food and games. This support will aid in providing five children with braces, buying two new cars for transportation to schools, and repairs needed on windows and walls at the missionaries homes.

Puerto Penasco has another unique attraction - the Seashell Museum. Local Entrepeneur/Tour Guides Russ and Naomi Black have been collecting shells and information around Rocky Point for years and now they have created a venue in which to share the treasures.

From their website:  A privately owned seashell collection. This small museum is free admission. It is open to the public each Friday from 10 to 5 (except during the months of July, August and September.) If you would like to visit on another day, appointments are readily available! Municipal Administration renovates urban image of malecón

In ensuring Puerto Peñasco continues to establish itself as the best destination on the Sea of Cortez, the local administration is working to improve infrastructure and the urban image of the malecón through an investment of over 2 million pesos.  Work is to include significant improvement to walkways, handicap ramps, signage, maintenance of benches and pergolas, as well as installation of trash cans.

Mayor Kiko Munro acknowledged the malecón is the window to the majestic Sea of Cortez, and as such requires constant maintenance. He detailed this is where millions of tourists visit each year, and an area that provides important tourism services, restaurants, the seafood market, and artisans market.   The Mayor stated Puerto Peñasco received over 2.4 million visitors in 2017, and is home to special events including performances of the 2018 Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Festival and the upcoming Viva Peñasco festivities to be held in March.

Paving, Paving, and More Paving

Construction on the second phase of repaving Blvd. Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez has progressed 60%, reports Municipal Coordinator of Public Works Terencio Gutiérrez Valenzuela.  The 3.5 million peso investment on the second phase includes repaving the boulevard, as well as comprehensive construction of paved shoulders along the boulevard, extending from Blvd. Fremont to the railroad tracks.

Colonia Brisa del Golfo and surrounding areas are receiving much needed paving and repairs as well. In addressing various requests from the community to improve the city's roads, work is currently underway to repave and fill in potholes along Ave. Guillermo Munro in Colonia Brisas del Golfo, among other areas.

Mayor Kiko Munro reports work to repave 32,000 square meters of asphalt along Avenida Sinaloa has begun, representing an investment of 9.3 million pesos.  In preparation for the road improvements, in late December the city took initial steps to fill in potholes along Ave. Sinaloa. Work on Ave. Sinaloa is planned to extend from Blvd. Fremont to Blvd. Benito Juarez.

Catching Up With CEDO in 2018

In 2018, CEDO's New Year's Resolution is to double our efforts and better communicate the exciting and unprecedented work that we are doing in the northern Gulf of California, and beyond, to our friends, followers, and supporters. We are moving fast and leaving wakes, so read on and don't get left behind!

Let's start with the basics; CEDO, the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans, is a non-profit organization, operating both in the U.S. and Mexico, with the mission of fostering vibrant communities and resilient ecosystems. We tackle pressing socio-economic and environmental problems by integrating people with knowledge and solutions. Namely, we are helping coastal communities on the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez, to better manage their marine and coastal resources. We work primarily with artisanal, or small-scale, fishermen, and also with the wider coastal community, as well as with students, teachers, scientists, businesspeople and decision makers on both sides of the border. CEDO believes in building bridges, not walls, and our programs include environmental education, capacity building, collaborative research and monitoring (with fishermen and local people), and "ecosystem management" through collective action. Ecosystem management refers to a holistic process that takes into account individual species as well as habitats, natural processes, and human communities with unique needs.

CEDO's working table is round, and has a place open for all the people whose participation is needed to improve ecosystem management in the northern Gulf of California, including representatives of conservation, government, large-scale industry and big fisheries, small-scale fisheries, and economic and community development. Through our leadership, these representatives are able to do much more than talk, and continuous, transparent interchange of knowledge and ideas, together with having the best available science at hand, is charting the course for greater sustainability in northern Gulf fisheries and other industries such as mining, coastal development, and tourism. By fostering and working closely with government representatives we are able to actualize accords and place them into a nationally recognized legal framework. This "bottom-up" approach is more successful than previous "top-down" efforts because it takes into account the experiences and visions of the people whose willing and enthusiastic participation is needed for real and lasting change to take hold. As our director, Peggy Turk Boyer likes to say, "CEDO goes deep."

This year, CEDO is undertaking two comprehensive, ecosystem-wide programs in the Northern Gulf of California, with actions being implemented at the local, regional and national level. Along the coast of Sonora, MX, in a biologically and socio-economically cohesive region that we call the "Puerto Penasco to Puerto Lobos Biological and Fisheries Corridor," CEDO is working with six artisanal fishing communities to better manage their diverse and economically significant fisheries.

Meanwhile, along the Baja California coast, CEDO is working within the context of the Upper Gulf of California Biosphere Reserve, and the pivotal conservation issues surrounding the endangered vaquita marina porpoise (Phocoena sinus) and totoaba fish (Totoaba macdonaldi). CEDO feels it is paramount to act now to save the vaquita and totoaba from extinction, AND we recognize the need to address the social and economic hardships that are at the root of this multi-faceted problem; if we want fishermen to get on board with conservation-based programs, we must first understand their needs and be able to convince them of a hopeful and dignified future. This is why CEDO has hired a social anthropologist to "go deep," and identify the best paths forward.

What our two regional programs have in common, is that they both apply a framework of "Coastal Marine Spatial Planning," a process in which conservation goals aim to overlap with socio-economic and development goals, for example by strengthening user rights, establishing community management areas, and creating fisheries refuges. Also, both programs address the compounding impacts of poorly managed and unregulated fisheries and the burgeoning impacts of climate change on entire ecosystems. Finally, both programs seek to conserve commercially and ecologically important species, whether they are celebrities like the vaquita, or overlooked, but nonetheless crucial species like the jaiba, or swimming crab.

CEDO's ability to apply over three decades of experience in order to effectively adapt to unique and rapidly shifting ecological, economic and political scenarios, in combination with our staff's passion and dedication to the people, plants, animals and habitats of the northern Gulf of California, make us the right people to take on this crucial work. We look forward to keeping you posted with regular updates about our progress to mitigate the impacts of climate change, build more sustainable fisheries, foster healthier and happier coastal communities, and protect the marine and coastal ecosystems that we all love and depend on.

SkyBridge Arizona Marks New Era in Cross-Border Commerce

Governor Doug Ducey announced that Arizona will be home to SkyBridge Arizona, the nation's first international air cargo hub to house both Mexican and United States customs. The first-of-its-kind service, which will be operated out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, will enable E-commerce companies, manufacturers and other commercial interests conducting business in Mexico and throughout Latin America to more efficiently and cost-effectively transport goods between countries, while ensuring proper inspections and safety controls.

The project is expected to create 17,000 direct and indirect jobs and increase cargo flights out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport by 2,000 a year, eventually reaching 10,000 by 2036.

"The arrival of SkyBridge Arizona once again proves that our state is a national leader in advancing innovative new ideas," said Governor Ducey. "Arizona has forged an incredible relationship with our friends and neighbors in Mexico, and we're very proud of this latest collaboration to enhance international trade and create more jobs for Arizonans."

Historic agreements signed with United States Customs and Border Protection, Mexico's Administracion General de Aduanas and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport creates America's first and only inland international air logistics and processing hub with Mexico.

"SkyBridge will truly change the way we conduct cross-border business, slashing delivery times for companies and ensuring safe transit, said SkyBridge CEO Ariel Picker. "This is true international cooperation and something we can all be proud of."

The new services provided by SkyBridge Arizona at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will allow users to send products anywhere in Mexico without having to go through the cumbersome and inefficient international customs center in Mexico City.

"Consumers in Latin America want the ability to purchase goods online and receive them the next day - SkyBridge Arizona will make that a reality," said Mesa Mayor John Giles. "This project will transform Mesa into an international e-commerce hub, benefitting not only our city but also our state and the Arizona-Mexico region as a whole."

The Unified Cargo Processing (UCP) Program - jointly operated by both U.S. and Mexico customs officers - seamlessly approves incoming and outgoing freight at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport bound for customers on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border. The UCP pilot program began last year in Nogales, Arizona and has been approved for air freight to SkyBridge Arizona.

All required documents, inspections, tracking and other services will occur on-site at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. The Customs Processing status will follow packages and cargo electronically to their final destinations to any city in Mexico, and eventually further into Central and South America. The UCP Program will be operational at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in the coming months.

"SkyBridge Arizona is a proven industry leader in global logistics and international cargo," said Gilbert Mayor and PMGAA Board Chair Jenn Daniels. "We are confident that their success at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will serve as a major economic catalyst for the region."

SkyBridge Arizona follows an air freight trend line that is soaring. Growth of air freight between Arizona and Mexico has grown 30 percent per year, or 180 percent from 2011 to 2015, outpacing all other modes of transport. Air freight trade between Arizona and Mexico currently totals $390 million per year and is expected to balloon to $650 million by 2025. The state also outpaces all of its Southwest neighbors of California, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas, whose air freight traffic grew by just 10 percent during the same period.

Additional Quotes:

"SkyBridge significantly changes the profile of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport from a convenient regional transportation hub to a powerful economic engine that promises true regional growth during the next two decades - and beyond," said Jose Pablo Martinez Buentello, SkyBridge Arizona project manager. "In short, SkyBridge Arizona is a 'game-changer.'"

"Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority (PMGAA) conducted an extensive search to find a development partner with the vision, industry connections and resources to assist the Airport in reaching its ultimate potential. We are excited to have SkyBridge Arizona on the PMGAA team," said PMGAA Executive Director/CEO J. Brian O'Neill.

SkyBridge Arizona will create a significant number of new jobs and capital investment in our communities," said Sandra Watson, Arizona Commerce Authority President & CEO. "We thank SkyBridge, the federal agencies on both sides of the border and our local partners for their hard work and collaboration in bringing this project to life."

SkyBridge Arizona By The Numbers:

  • 17,000 projected new direct and indirect jobs, with 10,000 directly related to SkyBridge and more than 2,400 in construction
  • Expected increase of 2,000 cargo flights per year, reaching 10,000 by 2036
  • $230 million, 360-acre commercial development
  • 2 million square feet of warehouse space
  • 1 million square feet of office space
  • 900,000 square feet of light industrial and flex space
  • 800,000 square feet of air cargo operations
  • 242 bed hotel
  • 100,000 square feet of retail and restaurants
  • 15-year build out plan includes infrastructure improvements around Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport including water, sewer and power expansions as well as water retention basins
Peso Predicted to Make Comeback in 2018: Bloomberg

According to top financial forecasters and Bloomberg collaborators Eric Martin and Justin Villamil, the Mexican peso is expected to make a big comeback this year...

For all the concern that the U.S. might dump Nafta or that Mexico's next president could upend economic policy, the peso is forecast to be the world's best-performing major currency in the first half of 2018. True, the expected gain is due in no small part to how much it sank at the end of last year.

The peso tumbled to a nine-month low against the dollar on Dec. 26, capping a four-month decline fueled by worries Donald Trump will pull out of the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, and that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador could win election in July.

The peso lost a third of its value during the past four years, when it was the worst performer among the world's most-traded currencies.

Yet the forecast also reflects Mexico's growth potential, stronger fiscal position and narrowing current account deficit, particularly as the year wears on, said Ernesto Revilla, who heads Latin America economics at Citigroup Inc. His bank expects the peso to rally more than 5 percent during the next six months to a year, and to reach 17 per dollar - 14 percent stronger - beyond a year, or in the "long term."

You May Not Use WhatsApp, But the Rest of the World Sure Does

If you did a double-take when Facebook announced that it was spending an astounding $19 billion to buy mobile messaging software company WhatsApp, you're forgiven. After all, the software isn't widely used in the United States, and WhatsApp is a 32-engineer company that's kept a decidedly low profile.

In India, however, it's the bomb. Mobile rewards company Jana says it's the most popular mobile messaging App in India, and in Brazil and Mexico too - smartphone markets that are just coming online thanks to cheap Android phones. More than 1 billion smartphones shipped last year. In India, 26 million of them - 58 percent of the market - cost less than $150, according to research firm IDC.

For many folks in these emerging markets, these devices aren't simply a first smartphone. They're a first computer. And so when they pick WhatsApp, they're starting from a clean slate. Here in the U.S., the age of the PC still colors our mobile messaging choices. We've already built our social networks on Facebook, Twitter, or Skype.

In India, there's less legacy clutter, and people are picking the best software - the ad-free, easy to use, well-designed WhatsApp. It's a no brainer really. Launch Facebook's mobile app, and the first thing you'll see will be a flurry of wall posts from people you barely know and a big juicy ad. It's annoying, and it's something you don't find on WhatsApp.

That's why WhatsApp is becoming a new kind of social network in these countries - one that connects people more immediately and intimately than Facebook; and that's why it connects with young users too, who don't suffer from this kind of PC hangover. That's why Facebook needed to buy the company at such an astounding price.

Future Not Bright for Mom and Pop Stores

Corner stores hampered by old-fashioned business practices, outdated business model

Can Mexico's beloved mom and pop-run corner stores survive amid the proliferation of multinational convenience stores and changing shopping habits?

The short answer is yes, but if the status quo continues and the small abarrotes or grocery stores are left to carry on with old-fashioned business practices and an outdated business model, the future perhaps doesn't look so bright.

For years experts have said the same thing over and over again: Las tienditas de la esquina (little corner stores) could disappear. Indeed, many of them already have.

But if the trend continues, the consequences - especially for the store owners and their families- would likely be dire.

An estimated two million people across Mexico are self-employed in the stores, they support five million people in total, sell half of all groceries across the nation and are the most common kind of small business, according to data from small business alliance Anpec.

They are also a vital part of local communities, allowing cash-strapped consumers to buy in smaller quantities than is normally possible and they often offer credit or flexible payment plans to regular customers.

"You can buy one aspirin. Or one diaper. Or one razor. I love that," an expat wrote on the blog Mexican Trailrunner, describing a small store in the Lake Chapala region.

The regional director of Fundes - an organization that promotes the development of small and medium-sized businesses - also believes that the tienditas play a key role in both the local and national economy.

"It's the kind of store that is fundamental to the local economy and to the business economy," said Alejandra Angarita Chahín.

But Fundes' overall assessment about their future is concerning.

"Neighborhood stores are extremely vulnerable; most are informal and [their owners] are poor and uneducated. [They are] established in disperse locations, don't operate in an optimal way and offer a limited range of products and services," the organization said.

Despite that vulnerability, along with other small, independent businesses, tienditas sell a huge proportion of all products sold by multinationals such as Coca-Cola and bakery company Bimbo, Angarita said.

In that seemingly incongruous dichotomy between massive multinationals and little stores, Fundes sees a solution.

Investment from the large companies and collaboration with small businesses is not only necessary but also mutually beneficial, Angarita argued.

Helping the stores modernize their business practices could "increase sales by approximately 15%" and also cut costs by almost 10%, she said, citing accounting and inventory management as areas needing improvement where multinationals could help.

Many of the small stores have failed to embrace technology while some owners have limited business knowledge, she added.

Angarita also questioned why large companies haven't offered financial aid already given that their sales would also likely increase.

"Suddenly you turn around and ask yourself, why isn't is being done? How is it that they haven't been investing in these little stores for years? It doesn't matter, let's start doing it now and from a business perspective," she said.

The president of Anpec believes that multinationals need to consider small, neighborhood stores as their social partners and that the survival of small grocery stores is a matter of the utmost importance.

"The supply [of food] is a national security problem, that's why strengthening the traditional method [of buying] is essential," Cuauhtémoc Rivera said.

However, the scale of the challenges the tienditas face cannot be underestimated.

"It's clear that Mexican families are buying through other channels, they're increasing their purchases via modern methods and more and more ways to shop are being added," consumer behavior company Kantar Worldpanel reported.

An increasing number of multinational supermarkets and convenience stores, with far greater purchasing power, continue to encroach on a market once dominated by the little guy, drawing customers and their hard-earned pesos away.

Oxxo and 7-Eleven are particularly destructive, according to the Mexico City Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation.

For every new convenience store that opens in the Mexico City metropolitan area, between 10 and 15 neighborhood stores close down, statistics show.

But still, many of the tiendas continue to operate despite their origins and practices being firmly rooted in the last century.

Fifty-eight per cent of retail purchases in Mexico are still made at the small stores, according to Neilsen, well above a 40% average across Latin America.

Fundes cites less prosperous customers and the fact that many do not have a car as two reasons why small neighborhood stores have continued to survive.

Loyalty to local store owners who customers know on a personal level as well as long-held habits are also likely factors along with the experience of shopping at a store that has its own individual idiosyncrasies and harks back to a time gone by.

Mexico to Export More than 100 Thosand Tons of Avacados for Superbowl

Super Bowl 52 Teaser - Avacados from Mexico
 Avacados from Mexico

Avocado producers from Michoacan are getting ready to export more than 100 thousand tons of avocado for the 52nd edition of the Super Bowl, which will be held on February 4 in the United States and which would leave an economic impact of more than 3 billion pesos.

The delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) in Michoacan, Jaime Rodriguez Lopez, said that they expect to surpass the numbers of previous years in 2018.

"We always reach 100 thousand tons in this game, but this year we will ship more. We can notice it in the daily harvest here, which is strong, we are going to send more than 100 thousand tons," he stressed.

Rodriguez Lopez said the price of the avocados for export varied, but that it currently stood at more than 30 pesos.
Mexican Avocados

The fruit of Aztec kings is plenteous and relatively inexpensive in the United States thanks to a trade deal struck over 20 years ago. On Sunday, more than 100 million pounds will be consumed. Or as the Hass Avocado Board marketing group in California puts it: If the avocados were dumped into Minnesota's US Bank Stadium, from end zone to end zone, they would stand over 20 feet deep. That's a heck of a guacamole bowl.

For several years now, Mexico has been the largest supplier of the green orbs to the US. The avocado is a bright spot in the free-trade saga between the two countries. Most Mexican farmers view the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as a pact that undercuts them with low-cost US-grown corn, for example. But for NAFTA, the avocado is a success story.

In the central state of Michoacán, Mexico's avocado belt, exports generated $600 million last year, and it's now the second source of income for the state - after remittances sent from Mexicans living in the US. "It has transformed this state, and put a hold on immigration," says José Luis Gallardo, the head of the Michoacán Avocado Commission and a plantation owner who has watched the industry explode in the past few years.

While fresh avocados have been a staple of the Mexican diet for centuries, in the US until fairly recently, they were mostly consumed in California or Texas, where they are grown. Today, the fruit is as common in California supermarkets as it is in Kansas. José Luis Obregon, the managing director of the Hass Avocado Board, says that less than a decade ago Americans consumed only about 500 million pounds of avocados a year. For the last two years, consumption has reached well over 1 billion pounds annually.

The industry in the state, which produces over 90 percent of Mexican avocados, generates 300,000 direct and indirect jobs. Of the over 20,000 avocado-producing orchards in Michoacán, about a quarter are certified by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to export to the US.

So, what to do with all those avocados? Well, here's one idea:

Mexican Avocado Salsa

Ingredients:

Directions:

Cut lengthwise around the middle of the avocados, then twist to separate the halves. Remove the pits by striking them with a knife blade, then scoop out the flesh with a spoon and dice.

Combine the avocados, tomatillos, onion, cilantro, jalapeno, lime juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a medium bowl and gently mix.

Provecho!

Euphemisms and Things Like That

Along with its penchant for polite language, Mexico makes use of a good number of euphemisms.

One example is the use of the verb regalar - which means to give as a present. If asking someone for a cigarette, a Spaniard or Argentine will say "¿me das un cigarro?" whereas in Mexico the usual way would be to say "¿me regalas un cigarro?" The implication is that of willingness on the part of the giver, and the absence of any debt on the part of the taker.

In times of crisis and other times, politicians and corporations love euphemisms. Prices never go up, they are merely adjusted. The pressing question: "¿ajustados hacia arriba?" will draw a painful look in response that says "of course, but we don't feel the need to mention it in such blatant terms."

Layoffs are "maximización de recursos humanos" or something of the sort, and the insistent "¿despidos?" (layoffs) will be considered somewhat mean-spirited.

This beating around the bush and shifting of the blame crops up in the most everyday expressions and turns of phrase.

In Spanish, you never lose anything, rather, the object "loses itself" from you. This and similar phrases make use of the reflexive "se" and the thing lost, dropped, or broken becomes the subject, while the loser (dropper, breaker) becomes the object.

Se perdió el dinero. The money got lost (lost itself).

Se me perdió el dinero. I lost the money. Perdí el dinero is quite correct, but not often heard.

Se me perdieron las llaves. I lost the keys (notice the plural form of the verb).

An illustration that this has euphemistic connotations and that the speaker isn't merely strait-jacketed by the proper use of language presents itself when someone else is to blame.

"Se me rompió tu iPhone." Your iPhone broke [in my hands?] may well elicit the outburst "¡rompiste mi iPhone!" and not the smoothed-out "se te rompió mi iPhone."

One verb that will only allow for the reflexive application is "drop."  He dropped the glass has to be "se le cayó el vaso," because Spanish has no direct verb for drop, and "dejar caer" or "let fall" is rather clumsy and could suggest that the dropping was deliberate.

The best of all these reflexive dodges refers to tardiness in a country where punctuality is recognized as a British virtue, to be admired but not really something to get worked up about or go to great lengths to copy.

"Sorry I'm late" is merely "se me hizo tarde," the lateness having crept up on the arriver.
