BEACHFRONT

Another month has gone by and Spring is just around the corner. We have had a few days of rain and wind but, overall, this has been a mild winter and we have had quite a few people in town. It seems that every winter, more and more people from the cold areas seem to discover that we're here. Some members of my family are now making this a regular retreat from the snow where they live for the rest of the year. They always ask why more people from the frozen Midwest don't spend winters here, and my only thought at an answer is simply because they just don't know about us yet. But, that is changing, little by little.

There is still so much going on around town that it's hard to keep up with sometimes. I attended a tourism conference and meeting with Sonora Governor Pavlovich, Secretary of Tourism Enrique de la Madrid, and Mayor Kiko Munro, on January 24th where they discussed tourism, new ideas and programs, and they reiterated support for the Home Port project and for Rocky Point. We have a new zip line currently going in near Cholla Bay. Freemont Blvd. has been finished. The road up Whale Hill to FISH Restaurant, Pan e Vino, and Casa de Capitan is about fifty percent paved and making progress. New houses are being built in Cholla Bay, in Las Conchas, and throughout town, and the feel of progress continues to resonate throughout our city.

If you plan on visiting Rocky Point on February 4th or for a few days after, please be sure to fill up with gas on the US side of the border before you come. As you may or may not know, the government raised the price of gas in Mexico on January 1st, and there is another increase scheduled for February. After the January increase, a protest at the Pemex plant caused a delay in the delivery of fuel, and Rocky Point was "dry" for 3 days. Since there is another planned protest on the 5th, it's better to be safe than sorry and fill up before you get here. God forbid you are "stranded" in Rocky Point because you can't buy fuel (as one of the news stations reported of a Phoenix resident last month during our 3 day "shortage"). Of course, we are only 60 miles from the border, so it's pretty hard to imagine being stranded (but, if you have to be stranded, Rocky Point would be my choice of locations). Anyway, just fill up in Ajo or Lukeville and you should be fine.

Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and re
member, as always, I've been here full time for almost 9 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not.

Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Governor, Secretary of Tourism, Visit Puerto Penasco

Puerto Peñasco as Tourist Destination for Important Projects and Investment

With the firm goal of uniting strengths to promote tourism and enhance the economy of Puerto Peñasco, Mayor Kiko Munro accompanied Mexico Tourism Secretary, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, and Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano at the Peñasco Convention Center for presentation of the initiative "Let's Travel through Mexico," along with the credit programs "Improve your Hotel," and "Connect with Tourism."

The mayor expressed his gratitude for federal and state support in moving Puerto Peñasco beyond being Sonora's best kept secret to one open to the world.  He noted it is time for the destination to cease being one with potential, while becoming one of strength.

"It is gratifying to see all present share the goal of working to make sure both national tourists and those from abroad continue to visit Puerto Peñasco, convinced, if there were any doubts, that we are a spot to get to know, where they can feel safe and treated with the quality and warmth that characterizes us," detailed the mayor.

Governor Pavlovich speaking at Convention Center

Mexico Tourism Secretary, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, acknowledged there are important projects and investments in Puerto Peñasco, stating coordinated work would be done between the federal and state levels in exploring how to best promote this extraordinary tourism destination while creating opportunities for residents and the country.

The Secretary of Tourism invited businesses to join in the movement "Let's Travel Through Mexico," so that Mexicans be given more opportunities to travel and see the country at accessible costs. He noted results of the program to date have been excellent.

Similarly, Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano acknowledged the work and efforts of business leaders, investors, and tourist service providers who have strengthened Puerto Peñasco as an international destination.

During the event, the Secretary of Tourism together with the Governor of Sonora presented an acknowledgement to Daniel Chávez Morán, President of the Vidanta Group, for his valuable contributions to Mexico and Sonora.

Rocky Point Zipline Vision Becomes a Reality

A couple months ago, Eric Brown of Rocky Point  announced  on his Facebook page that Rocky Point would soon have a new, exciting, activity - zip lines. The construction would be on "La Loma", as known in Spanish, and "Competition Hill" in English, near Cholla Bay. At this time, the zip lines have become a reality and construction is underway and near completion.

Robert Nickell, with 25 years of experience in the construction of zip lines under the company, Universal Zipline Technology, is in charge of the project and has installed zip lines in such places as Costa Rica, Ecuador, British Virgin Islands, China, and the United States..

The construction includes a series of five lines, the first having a distance of 300 meters, 304 meters for the second, 426 meters distance for the third, 609 meters for the fourth, and the fifth will be 304 meters long. Assuming the success and popularity of the project, plans are already in place to construct a sixth line in the future which would be the longest zip line in all of Latin America at this time.

It has been made abundantly clear that the lines and equipment will receive rigorous maintenance and periodic inspections by people outside the company as a way to ensure that they receive the best possible care in order to ensure the safety of all clients.

For those of us who have enjoyed Competition Hill as an area for four wheeling and as a place to enjoy the spectacular views form up top, it should be noted that these uses of the hill will not be affected in any way. The zip lines are very high from the ground and away from any potential areas of off-road use.

The installation/construction process has gone quickly and the zip lines are expected to be ready for regular use by the end of February or the beginning of March. The plan was to have them in place prior to the Spring Break visitors arriving and by the way it looks, we will have a chance to try it out even before that time.

Pricing has not been established at this point but the plan is to keep the prices lower than zip lines in the USA and other parts of Mexico. There is also a plan being discussed to offer discounts to Puerto Penasco residents.

In closing, this new adventure was made possible due to the vision and persistence of local Rocky Point resident Eric Brown and from the great cooperation and vision from Local developer and land owner, Gus Brown. Thanks should also be given to the local government administration and Mayor Kiko Munro for making the process a smooth one.

Great Turnout at Scottsdale Barrett Jackson Show  and Sonoran Resorts Sponsors for 5th Consecutive Year

The Sonoran Resorts sales team once again represented our clients and our resorts at the Scottsdale Barrett Jackson Show. This was our 5th consecutive year, and the positive feedback received at the show forecasts another very good year of sales by our exclusive Sonoran Resorts team. This year, Sheri Jaymes and Jessica Grier teamed up to work at the show. Though the hours are long and the show runs for 10 days, the overwhelming interest in Rocky Point and in our Sonoran Resorts make it all worthwhile.

In talking with literally thousand of people over a 10 day period, we get a very good feel for the sentiment of the general population towards Rocky Point, towards Mexico in general, and towards our own Sonoran Resorts. This year's show probably had the highest approval rating and the highest level of interest that we have seen since we started attending the show 5 years ago. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise as we have seen an increase in local tourism every year for the same period of time. But, it sure is nice to hear it from such a cross section of people.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Jan 22, 2017

- Barrett-Jackson, The World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions®, kicked off its 46th year by breaking more than 40 vehicle auction sales records (as verified by Hagerty Data) during the 46th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, held Jan. 14-22, 2017, at WestWorld of Scottsdale in Arizona. "This year's Scottsdale auction was a tremendous success," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. "Despite the rain and colder temperatures, we had a phenomenal turnout, set 40 world auction sales records and sold more than 1,800 pieces of authentic automobilia. This year's entertainment factor was through the roof. From Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steven Tyler and Grammy award-winning Justin Bieber, through undefeated pro boxing champion Floyd Mayweather and the most decorated Olympian in history, Michael Phelps, to two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, there was no shortage of entertainment and full-throttle excitement."

The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction gave bidders the chance to select from a wide range of American muscle, European classics, exotic sports cars and one-of-a-kind customs. The top cars sold in Scottsdale include:

"Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale has become the most anticipated event of the year as it is the barometer for the hobby," said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. "Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Week, as proclaimed by the city of Scottsdale, is an immersive entertainment experience that offers something every person can enjoy. The World's Greatest Collector Car Auction was the only place to find the greatest selection of cars, the most passionate enthusiasts, the largest number of charity cars and the biggest displays by top automakers, all inside more than a million square feet of covered space."

The Charlie Thomas Collection, which featured 146 vehicles, sold for an impressive combined total of just over $1.7 million, with the top three vehicles including a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (Lot #1284), a 1957 Ford Thunderbird "F" Convertible (Lot #1282) and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster (Lot #1283).

Eight charity vehicles crossed the Scottsdale block this year, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and four-time Grammy winner Steven Tyler's 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder (Lot #3003). Tyler roared onto the stage to help sell his rare Hennessey, which sold for $800,000, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Janie's Fund.

"Steven Tyler entered the auction arena in true rock and roll style," said Jackson. "With a grand entrance featuring lights, music and Steven standing in the passenger seat, the crowd was on their feet like we were at one of his concerts. There's really no place in the world, like Barrett-Jackson, that brings together superstars and super cars."

To date, Barrett-Jackson has raised over $93 million for local and national charities.

This year's excitement at Barrett-Jackson continued beyond the auction block and included a variety of automotive and lifestyle activities, including the Coca-Cola Garage and Patio. Other activities included Ford and Chevrolet Ride 'N Drives, Dodge Thrill Rides and complimentary "Behind the Hobby" Collector Car Symposiums.

The fun continued with Arena Polo matches, an Arabian Horse Exhibition, Indian Motorcycle Demo Rides, live bands, hundreds of exhibitor and sponsor displays, a DIY Pavilion and the Shell Pennzoil Pioneering Performance Stage.

The first to broadcast a live collector car auction in 1997, Barrett-Jackson has pioneered how enthusiasts access its auctions around the world. Today, 20 years later, Barrett-Jackson is the leading collector car auction on the air. More than 36 hours of live coverage of this year's Scottsdale Auction was shown on Velocity and Discovery simultaneously in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Discovery en Español. Barrett-Jackson is also the first to pioneer a second screen experience this year with the new Shell Pennzoil Pioneering Performance Stage.

Puerto Penasco Lost a Good Friend Last Month

Roger Clifton is a very well known name in Rocky Point. Well known for his business interests here, but  possibly better known for his very generous nature and his huge support of the less fortunate here in our little city. Roger passed away last month.

Roger owned Clifton Investment Company which acquired, developed and managed over 5000 apartment units and commercial properties in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In the early 90's Rodger and Jeanette "retired" to Rocky Point, Puerto Penasco, MX. Almost immediately they opened First Mexican Investments with their partner, Compadre and 5th son, Enrique (Carmen) Rodriguez. So much for retirement.

There is no doubt that Rodger was a successful businessman, but it was his generosity of spirit and his philanthropy that set him apart as a human being. From the time he began his first company in Michigan, Rodger and Jeanette spent most of their money, time and energy helping those less fortunate. Rodger and Jeanette were instrumental with many projects including an orphanage in Altar, Mexico, "Casa Hogar" a home for the elderly in Puerto Penasco and assisting Amore Ministries in the community which brought many groups together to build over 2000 homes for those in need. One of their most unique projects was instructing students from the Penasco middle schools to build "Earthship" houses out of tires, cans and sand and showing them the benefits of recycling. Mexico was not the only place that benefited from Rodger and Jeanette's huge hearts.

Their latest projects in Tucson have been the Santa Maria Soup Kitchen and Sister Jose Women's Center which they have been raising funds to construct a new building. There are no words to summarize the life of Rodger Joseph Clifton. His life's accomplishments were not his business successes, but rather the way he was able to connect with people. Rodger made people believe in themselves and truly loved life. Always the leader, Rodger inspired innumerable individuals during his 81 years on earth. His kindness, love, humor and zest for life will live on through those who were fortunate enough to have known him. Vaya con Dios, Roger.

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!

Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

Sonoran Resorts Annual Food Drive Donations Delivered to DIF

Our annual food drive over the holidays was very successful once again and we would like to thank all of you who donated or dropped off food. Two pickup loads were delivered to the local DIF office where they will be distributed to the less fortunate around our city. The Sonoran Resorts holds this food drive each Holiday Season beginning just before Thanksgiving and going through New Year's Day.

Please keep it in mind for next year and, of course, please feel free to donate whatever you can, whenever you can. You can go directly to DIF or one of the wonderful local charities, or you can drop off whatever you wish to donate at one of our sales offices and we will see that it goes to those who need it.

Balloon Festival in Rocky Point

El Ruta del Globos brings between 10 an 15 (at least!) hot air balloons to grace the skies around Puerto Penasco.

The last weekend in February will see days where you can go up in a balloon (something I have always wanted to do). At night, the balloons will 'glow', providing a beautiful show along with live music.

The route has been most recently in San Luis, where it was a big hit. Pilots for the event have participated in the famous Albuquerque Balloon show, and others in the U.S. and Mexico.

Father and son pilot team of Patricio Nilz, Sr. and Jr. will participate. Junior is the youngest licensed balloon pilot. Dad holds the record as the only pilot to drift across the Grand Canyon!

A first for Rocky Point, come check out the Ruta del Globo February 24, 25, and 26.

Gas Leak Explodes in Las Conchas

Two American tourists were injurec in a home that they had rented in Las Conchas after a propane gas tank exploded. Investigators said that there had been a gas leak which was ignited by an electrical spark happening after power had gone out and then was restored. The incident happened during the early morning hours of New Year's Day after a truck had struck a power pole, causing an electrical outage to some of the homes. When the power was restored, somehow a spark ignited the fumes and caused the explosion.

The home was totally destroyed and the two occupants were badly injured but survived the blast. They were stabilized and transported to a medical facility in Arizona where they continue to recover from their injuries. Elements of the Fire Department, Civil Protection, Red Cross and Municipal Police responded to the emergency quickly in response to several emergency calls.

Municipal Administration sustains commitment to transparency and accountability

Mayor Kiko Munro met with Eugenio Pablos Antillón of the Higher Institute of Auditing and Oversight (ISAF) in furthering his administration's commitment to transparent accountability.

Mayor Kiko Munro expressed interest for his administration to continue to be an example of responsible use and management of public funds, while furthering the struggle against corruption and impunity.

Mayor pursues strategic projects with State Water Commission

Mayor Kiko Munro presented strategic projects to the State Water Commission (CEA) in working to further rehabilitate infrastructure on the city's water and sewage lines, as well as efforts for a desalination plant.

In a meeting with CEA Spokesperson Sergio Ávila Ceceña, the mayor expressed appreciation for investment efforts in 2016 from the different levels of government, which significantly improved water extraction and distribution throughout the city.

The mayor noted while the city provided services to more than 3 million people in 2016, this led to a collapse in wells and water lines, yet through joint efforts among authorities from the local, state, and federal level, they confronted the problem while continuing to seek permanent solutions.

Water concerns in 2016, explained the mayor, led to the need to pursue resources from the State and Federal levels in order to rehabilitate and improve wells, the potable water network, sewage network, and micro-meters, as well as to strengthen efforts for a desalination plant.

Municipal DIF celebrates Kings Day

For a second year in a row, the Municipal DIF office celebrated traditional Kings Day alongside hundreds of children and parents who delighted in a family atmosphere filled with music, gifts, surprises, raffles, and lots of fun.

Mayor Kiko Munro, accompanied by his wife and Municipal DIF President Linda Pivac de Munro, led the festivities celebrating the children of Puerto Peñasco on such a special day, expressing their appreciation to all those who donated to the Toy Drive held at the end of December, which made the Kings Day festivities possible.

Following the Kings Day celebration at the Municipal DIF, Mayor Munro and his wife visited the Amores de Peñasco children's shelter where they similarly shared in special moments with the children.

Mayor Kiko Munro Oversees Infrastructure Work Representing Investment of 120 Million Pesos

Mayor Kiko Munro affirms Puerto Peñasco continues its transformation with investments of approximately 120 million pesos being put into 38 different infrastructure projects.

Accompanied by Coordinator of Public Projects, Terencio Gutiérrez Valenzuela, the mayor visited various projects across town, which will benefit the city residents.

"Some type of infrastructure, whether for education, road paving, restoring recreational and public spaces, public plazas, roofing, broadening electric and water lines, among others, are taking place in all parts of the city," detailed the mayor.

In steps to support Peñasco families while promoting economic revival through the 38 projects, work is being done locally while materials are being purchased from local businesses, along with materials for construction and transportation.

Gutiérrez added they have been able to grade 350,000 square meters of area streets and avenues following rains at the end of December. Furthermore, staff from Municipal Public Services and the Temporary Jobs Program are taking part in a permanent clean-up campaign to remove trash and debris from city streets in improving the overall urban image.

Peso/Dollar Exchange Rate Means Great Prices in Mexico

This year, the Mexican peso has continued to hit new lows against the U.S. dollar. The exchange rate reached 20 pesos to the dollar this past summer, and has increased and remained above that number ever since.

For those of us with U.S. dollars, it means that our money stretches further than it has in years. Your dollar today buys roughly 43% more pesos than it did two years ago. And while local prices have risen a bit in response, it still means a huge increase in your buying power. That increase even extends to some real estate costs. So if you've ever dreamed of buying a condo in Mexico, now could be a great time to do it.

Mexico has always offered good-value real estate. Even million-dollar beachfront condos here would certainly cost at least two to three times more in Southern California or in Victoria, British Columbia. Most of us don't look to spend quite that much, but we are always happy to get good value on more modestly priced properties.

Though almost all beachfront properties are priced in dollars, prices are still very competitive. And keep in mind that many of your ownership costs such as utilities, property taxes, maintenance, and other expenses, are paid in those low, low-priced pesos...

Living and Dying in Mexico, There is Help for Your Heirs

     By Cholla Charli

Retiring in Mexico is a dream come true for many of us U.S. and Canadian citizens. But if we die while we're here in Mexico, our dream will likely become a nightmare for our family members who don't live here and are suddenly faced with a gauntlet of duties in a completely unfamiliar environment.

Imagine this: You live alone. You die unexpectedly. Your friends or neighbors discover you have passed and call the authorities. When your body is removed by the coroner, your home and belongings are vulnerable and there may be no one close who knows your last wishes or what must be done to settle your affairs.

When your family does arrive, they have no idea what is required, where to go or how to communicate with the many agencies that are involved. The hurdles they will face are numerous and frustrating; but it doesn't have to be that way, thanks to the efforts of three local, non-national residents of Puerto Peñasco.

Linda Mottle and Kori Bonini wanted to save their families and the families of their Peñasco friends, from the challenges of making after-life arrangements while they are grieving. So they began to explore just what must be done.

"We were trying to find a solution to protect people," said Mottle. "We soon realized we needed someone who could be an advocate when you die. Someone who could secure your assets and have the authority to tell people they cannot enter your home, and who could handle everything required."

The women realized there was a need to create a legal document that would designate a conservator, a protector or guardian, with the legal authority to act on the part of the deceased and their heirs.

"There's nothing like the provision of a conservator at this point in Mexico law. It's not in the legal lexicon," Mottle said. "The arrangement couldn't be a contract because in Mexico, a contract is void when a person dies. It had to be a specialized will, which would give someone the legal authority needed."

Mottle and Bonini sought out a person who had the compassion, commitment, ability and respect of local authorities to get it done. They soon zeroed in on Georgina Ross, the owner of Puerto Peñasco Bilingual Services who has operated successfully here for more than 11 years.

"Georgina got it. She knew this was huge and badly needed," Mottle said. "She is fully on board and has invested time and money to increase her all-bilingual staff and expand her offices behind City Hall.

"The most gratifying part has been the help and support from both sides, Mexico and USA, to expedite and help the relatives when the time comes," Mottle added.

In Mexico, not one but three death certificates are needed from various agencies, along with birth certificates, passports and marriage certificates, which must be sent to the Consulate which makes up the Death of a Foreign National certificate needed by insurance companies back in the U.S. The death certificate is only one step in this gauntlet that must be run when a non-national dies in Mexico.

To simplify the process, they created a data sheet for clients. The client completes the data sheet, providing all the information that will be needed to make after-death arrangement. Those arrangements could include funeral arrangements, contacting the USA consulate, getting the death certificate and securing the property.

Additional services, include the disposition of personal items, sale of real property, closing utility accounts, contacting insurance companies, can be arranged for additional charges.

This Conservator Service can help non-national residents of Sonora and their families protect assets, and assist with any associated services the family desires. There will be a one-time fee to sign-up for the service and a small annual data update fee. People living together who are not legally married are considered individuals and will be charged the individual rate. To get started, clients will need to complete the data sheet and state their wishes for disposition of remains and personal property after their death.

To learn more about the service, attend one of the upcoming short presentations. February presentations are set for Wednesday, February 15th at 1PM at Pink Cadillac with appetizers provided, and at the American Legion on Tuesday, February 21st at 1PM, before bingo.

If any group or HOA is interested in having a presentation, they can contact Georgina Ross at (638) 388-5322 (MX phone) or (520) 265-3789 (US phone). MX Cell 638-112-0922.

Puerto Peñasco to Host Liga Norte de México All-Star Game

In continuing to promote special events, Puerto Peñasco will host the Liga Norte de Mexico (LNM) All-Star game this Spring, along with the LNM youth league tournament.

Accompanied by Adrían García Solís, Director of the LNM, Mayor Kiko Munro announced these important sporting events will take place May 26th - 28th, with the All-Star game scheduled for May 27th at the newly remodeled Francisco León García Stadium. Residents and visitors alike will be able to take in the professional level games!

Part of the attractions over the weekend, explained the LNM Director, will be the LNM Jr. tournament that will feature selected youth teams from the league, with the final being played right before the All-Star game.

In addition, in coordination with the Municipal Administration, the LNM will be holding an Athletic Congress from May 26th  - 28th, with speakers from professional baseball, as well as a Sports Expo, among other attractions for baseball fans.

If you haven't been to a Tiburones baseball game while you are in town, you really don't know what you are missing. Be sure to check their schedule (see it here: http://www.liganortedemexico.net/calendario/) and attend a game if possible. If you go to one game, you'll be sure to return again as they are a super inexpensive and fun way to spend some time while you're here.

Tourist Assistance Unit to Increase Number of Agents

The job of the Puerto Penasco Tourist Assistance Agents has never been more important and they continue to provide several much-needed services in and around the tourist areas of the city. Bridging that gap between the police and the public is one area which was a previously unattended position and it has become only one of the many important duties performed by these bilingual, motivated, and very personable Agents.

Besides patrolling the beach to help tourists in various ways, our Agents are now passing out flyers and information regarding Puerto Penasco's new "Clean Beach" certification. The TAU is tasked with helping to enforce the clean beach regulations, some of which include keeping pets on a leash, the ban on motorized vehicles, and everyone picking up all of their trash when they leave. The Clean Beach certification was difficult to obtain and the TAU Agents are doing their part to ensure that the certification remains in Rocky Point for a long time to come.

First Aid and First Responder duties quite often fall to the Agents as well, and that fact has been literally a lifesaver ever since their initial confirmation. Occasionally, the Agents are also required to perform more of an enforcement role and have from time to time, made arrests and assisted private security at the resorts with unruly or intoxicated persons until the municipal police show up to take over.

Of all the duties and responsibilities that the Unit must handle, one of their favorites has been helping tourists with directions, recommendations, translations, and even history and fun facts about our city. One of the requirements for being a TAU Agent is to be Spanish/English bilingual and to have a very congenial disposition. This fact is very apparent whenever you meet one of the group and discover that their friendliness and helpful attitude never fails to impress.

The number of Agents has been reduced over the past few months. The slower winter months did not require as many Agents, so the Agents who were lost due to a variety of reasons had not been replaced. At this time, however,  TAU Director, Luis Molina, along with Mayor, Kiko Munro, are recruiting additional personnel to bring the number of active Agents back to twenty, with just enough time for training prior to Spring Break and our high tourist season. Most of the recruiting is being done through applicants who are already employed in different positions with the city. Looking within first makes the hiring procedure go more smoothly and more quickly.

The Puerto Penasco Tourist Assistance Unit is a government agency, under the control of the Mayor and the Director of the Unit, however, they do operate on a limited budget. The Tourist Assistance Advisory Committee, among other things, is always looking for donations from the public of time and expertise, equipment, supplies, and actual funds, in order to provide more and better resources for the Unit so that they may continue to do an exemplary job of keeping Rocky Point tourism as safe and enjoyable as possible. Feel free to contact our committee with any questions, requests, comments, or to help out with a donation.  The contact information for both the TAU and the Advisory Committee are on the flyer at the top of this story.
OXXO Gas Inaugurates First Gas Station; Cheaper and without Pemex Logos

In an interview prior to inaugurating the first Oxxo Gas station in Monterrey, director of Oxxo Gas, Rolando Vázquez Carrillo, commented that  "the Mexican energy market is currently perceived as one of the most attractive in the world and has the opportunity to become one of the largest that will open during this decade"  He commented that the opening of this station initiates the new stage of free market fuel distribution in conjunction with Pemex.

Oxxo Gas has been in the fuel  market for 20 years as a distributor under the Pemex brand, but following the recent changes, it can do so under its own name and logo, which, according to Vazquez Carrillo, will further highlight  the added value that has characterized Oxxo.

In that sense, he explained that during these decades of work in the North part of the country, Oxxo gas has stood out for giving added value to the service of gasoline for automobiles, and for the frequent promotions which accompany the service. He recalled that one of the most popular promotions has been the so-called "billetigas", with which the customer accumulates one for each refueling and after just two visits, they can purchase a movie ticket for only 28 pesos.

Vázquez Carrillo clarified that the service strategy that Oxxo Gas has matured over the years has become the aspired to model of care in the industry, one where the employees who provide their services do it with warmth and professionalism. These elements, although they seem simple, are those that give added value that the consumer seeks and that the market requires to guarantee a quality service.

He added that Oxxo has not only limited itself to offering a good service, but also has responded to the vision of social responsibility and sustainability that should characterize companies and businesses. An example of this is that in each Oxxo Gas facility follows an ecological process, making sure that the environment where these premises exist has green areas to respond to the challenge of global warming.

US Navy-Trained Dolphins To Help Find And Rescue Endangered Vaquita Porpoises

The world's smallest porpoise, the vaquita, is endemic to Mexico, and, sadly, looks like it could go extinct by 2022. Enter an unlikely source of rescue: US Navy-trained dolphins.

The military mammals and their handlers are to be deployed to Mexican waters to help locate, round up, and protect the critically endangered vaquitas, with the plan of moving them to a temporary holding pen in the Gulf of California.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Jim Fallin of the US Navy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific confirmed the involvement of the Navy Marine Mammal Program (NMMP), which is expected to be carried out this spring.

The NMMP has previously trained dolphins to use their sonar, or echolocation, to locate sea mines, and now they are hoping that sonar can also be used to help locate the elusive vaquita, with the dolphins notifying their handlers when they have been found.

"Their specific task is to locate," Fallin said. "They would signal that by surfacing and returning to the boat from which they were launched."

Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho, the chairman of the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita, explained that the project has "two primary goals: determining the feasibility of locating and catching vaquitas, as a phase one. And as a second phase, to determine the feasibility of temporarily housing vaquitas in the Gulf of California."

Vaquitas (Phocoena sinus) only live in the northern part of the Gulf of California and currently hold the title of world's most endangered cetacean. It's thought that there are only a few dozen left, down from around 60 last year. With a decrease in population of around 40 percent a year, the porpoises will likely "decline to extinction by 2022," according to Rojas-Bracho.

content-1483531947-gettyimages-519378352This is what the vaquitas are up against. Totoaba bladders are considered a delicacy in China. ANTHONY WALLACE/AFP/Getty Images

The rare porpoises are the unfortunate victims of illegal fishing for totoaba, the bladder of which is considered a delicacy in China. Mexico has banned gill nets, which the vaquitas get caught in, but has struggled to enforce the ban as the demand for totoaba is so high.

Vaquitas have never been held successfully in captivity, so experts are hoping that by creating "floating pens" in a safe bay of the Gulf of California, the porpoises will be protected and hopefully able to breed while still being in their native waters.

The catch, capture, and enclose approach is risky though, and not everybody agrees it is the best approach. If any of the females die during the operation, future breeding will be in peril. However, experts involved in the operation are keen to stress that this is to be a temporary sanctuary while the real priority is to enforce the gill net ban, making the vaquitas' environment safe again.

Mexico Still in Top 10 for Growth Prospects

Annual CEO survey ranks Mexico in eighth place as an important country for growth

Mexico not only remains among the world's most attractive countries in which to invest but has moved up a notch.

The annual CEO Survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, or PwC, found Mexico ranked eighth, up from ninth last year, based on feedback from 1,379 CEOs from 79 countries.

The survey asked, "Which three countries, excluding the one in which you are based, do you consider most important for your organization's overall growth prospects over the next 12 months?"

Six per cent of respondents named Mexico as one of those three, the same percentage as last year.

The survey, conducted between September and December, was presented yesterday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

At the top of the list was the United States with 43%, followed by China with 33%, Germany 17%, the United Kingdom 15%, Japan 8%, India 7%, Brazil 7%, Mexico 6%, France 5% and Australia 5%.

Mezcal's History is Older than Thought

Researchers find evidence of stills in pre-Hispanic Mexico

The established belief that the process of distilling alcohol arrived in Mexico with the Spanish invasion of the 1500s has been debunked by the research of two university professors.

Studies conducted over more than 10 years by Mari Carmen Serra Puche and Jesús Carlos Lazcano Arce of the Anthropological Research Institute at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have shown that distillation was employed in Mesoamerica at least 2,500 years ago.

The researchers' field investigations took them to the states of Tlaxcala and Oaxaca, among other mezcal-producing regions, and culminated in a recently published book that details the results of their archaeological, historical and even chemical studies.

In their book, El mezcal, una bebida prehispánica (Mezcal, a pre-Hispanic beverage) , the professors refer to a discovery in the pre-Hispanic city of Xochitécatl-Cacaxtla, in Tlaxcala. There, Serra and Lazcano found houses with ovens that didn't appear to have been used for common activities such as firing pottery.

"On the oven walls we observed runoff stains; we didn't know what had made them, but we inferred that organic matter had to have been cooked there," said Lazcano.

A large number of burned stones were also found within the ovens. "These had no immediate apparent utility, but we were certain they were not needed in the elaboration of pottery. We now know they were used to conserve heat," he added.

A chemical analysis performed by UNAM specialists on samples of the runoff stains determined that they were organic in origin, and they were identified as having come from the cooked hearts of the maguey plant, known as

piñas

.

Serra said that while clay fragments had been found, they were not the common discarded remnants of pottery manufacturing. Instead, "the fragments belonged to the lower half of very large pots, which we were to later identify as part of the stills."

Until now it has been thought that the only alcoholic beverage in pre-Hispanic Mexico was pulque, the fermented sap of the maguey plant.

Authentic Sopa de Albondigas (Meatball Soup)

Albondigas are meatballs, often used in a soup, known to many as "Mexican comfort food." Though we consider albondigas soup (or sopa de albondigas) Mexican food, history follows a line that dates back to the sixth Century, where the Islamic influence dominated the region of Southwestern Europe. Then in the 13th Century, the Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered the region which had been occupied by the Muslims. Many of the culinary traditions were integrated into the Spanish community. From there, albondigas made its way to Mexico by way of the conquistadors, where it has remained and flourished into a cultural favorite.

Ingredients
    • 1lb. ground beef [extra lean]
    • 1 tbs cumin [powder]
    • 1 tbs salt [will need about 2-3 more tbs added once meatballs/veggies are boiling]
    • 1 tomato finely diced
    • 1 white onion diced
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tbs flour
    • 3 heaping tbs white rice [rinse rice before adding]
    • 5-6 large carrot's
    • 3-4 potato's
    • 3-4 Zucchini
    • 1 small can tomato sauce
Preparation

1. Fill pot with water [3/4 full] and set to boil
2 .In large bowl, mix into ground beef: Cumin, salt, egg, flour, onion, tomato, rice, then make desired size meatballs [usually golf ball size].
3. water should be boiling by the time you've made the meatballs, add to water [be careful not to burn yourself, drop in gently]
4. Meatballs should be boiling about 15 min or so [while you cut up veggies], add carrots first [let boil for about 5-6min] then add potato's and zucchini.
5. Let boil about 10 min, then add tomato sauce and 2-3 tbs salt [taste after 5 minutes, if more salt needed, add to your liking. Soup will be ready as soon as potato's and zucchini are soft.
The Mother of All Expressions

Mothers are widely revered in Mexico, and although Mother's Day on May 10 isn't a national holiday, not a great deal gets done that day. It isn't moved to the nearest Sunday like Father's Day, or Mother's Day in other countries. When it falls on a weekday so be it. Working mothers are given the day off, some people leave early for family gatherings-and any employer who refuses to allow this without good reason may be said to "not have a mother." Which brings this story to its point: the widespread use of the word madre in expressions whose English equivalents have nothing to do with matriarchal figures.

When it's said of a person, "no tiene madre", it means they are shameless or unscrupulous. It can also be applied to things that are disgraceful or simply unfair. A variation is "¡qué poca madre!" which amounts to the same thing.

These two expressions, however, can also mean something quite different, in fact something quite positive.

"Este juego de video no tiene madre" means the video game is very good, extraordinary in fact.  A football team that played "de poca madre" played extremely well, and a great party can also be said to have been "de poca madre".

A car that whizzes past at breakneck speed  "va hecho la madre", although "va hecho la raya" means the same thing and is more fitting in polite company.

Hasta la madre is a versatile expression that suggests testing limits in a variety of ways. Its basic meaning is fed-up, or sick and tired. "Estoy hasta la madre del tráfico", or the more personal and unpleasant "me tienes hasta la madre".

Someone who is very drunk can be described as being "hasta la madre" with alcohol, and a bus that is so crammed full with passengers that they are hanging out of the doors is also packed "hasta la madre".

"Hasta el gorro" - literally "up to the cap" - is a valid alternative.

In Spanish "mentar la madre" means to insult - literally "mention or refer to the mother", even if the recipient's mother or mother-child relationship isn't alluded to.

Threats to visit bodily harm on a person can be expressed as "te voy a romper la madre"  or "dar en la madre" which make as little sense, literally considered, as some of their English equivalents. And if you run headlong into a brick wall or fall off a bike, a bystander may observe that someone "se dio en la madre".

A standalone expression of surprise or shock, "¡en la madre!" can be elicited from someone observing an accident or disastrous event.

But the real Mexican classic is "me vale madre" - "I don't give a damn" - used widely across classes and  immortalized by the illustration of late cartoonist Rogelio Naranjo. This mother of all expressions even has its own noun form: someone in Mexico who habitually couldn't care less is known as a "valemadrista".

So, always love and respect your mother, but feel free to use a little slang once in awhile too...
