Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter
We're in the Dog Days of summer, however, these warm days aren't slowing down our department. The following pages outline several activities we're involved in, and cases wherein we need your help.
Our Homicide Cold Case Detectives are working on a 45-year-old case that ended the life of Nikki Benedict in 1967. All we need is that one tip - either to the San Diego Sheriff's Department or San Diego County Crime Stoppers to find the person responsible for this young girl's murder.
Our Encinitas Station is co-hosting a Bike Road-E-O and will feature a bicycle and helmet safety inspection. The "Rules of the Road" will be provided with a chalk outline course for children to help them learn safe bicycle riding.
You may be surprised to learn what's stolen the most in July and August - details inside.
Enjoy your Dog Days!

Active Shooter Training
 | | Active Shooter Training |
Sheriff's Deputies are prepared to respond to active shooting situations like the tragedy that unfolded in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado where 12 people were killed and 59 were injured.
An Active Shooter Training was held in San Marcos on July 17th and 18th. The scenario played out at Palomar Community College. With gunshots ringing out, deputies made their way through the halls of two buildings practicing how they would track down a gunman. Student volunteers played the role of victims and hostages. In this exercise, deputies learned to take on an active gunman without waiting for special tactical teams to arrive. The drill also focused on teamwork and communication.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
Each year, nearly 11,000 people are killed on our roadways due to drunk driving. That would equal 21 jumbo jets crashing each year (NHTSA).
In an effort to get drunk drivers off the road, the Sheriff's Department is joining with law enforcement throughout the nation for the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign August 17 to September 3, 2012. This comprehensive campaign in the final weeks of summer through Labor Day will include DUI patrols and DUI/Driver License Checkpoints.
"By joining this nationwide effort, we will make the county's roadways safer for everyone throughout the Labor Day period." says Sheriff Bill Gore."If you've had too much to drink, don't even think about getting behind the wheel. Driving impaired is simply not worth the risk. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching, so Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

Hiking Safety
Sheriff's ASTREA and Search and Rescue are reminding the public to take a few precautions when hiking in hot weather. ASTREA has been called six times in the past month on the Julian side of Cedar Creek Falls and Three Sisters Falls to rescue hikers and a dog. On July 9th, a 19-year-old woman was found unconscious with signs of heat stroke. She was airlifted to a hospital, but did not survive. No matter your level of health, everyone needs to be careful of the dangers of walking or hiking in the heat. Take it easy when temperatures are scorching. Move your exercise indoors or schedule any outdoor activity for early morning or evening to avoid the real heat of the day. It's also important to remember your pets and ensure they are not overexposed to heat and have plenty of water. A reminder, the west access to Cedar Creek Falls off of Thornbush Road remains closed. Del Mar Horse Racing Season
Sheriff Bill Gore wants to remind all who attend the Del Mar Races this season to have a good time and think before you get behind the wheel of your car. "We want everyone to enjoy themselves, and if you drink alcohol, ensure you have a designated driver," says Sheriff Gore.
The Del Mar Races run through September 5th. Thousands of visitors to the race track will enjoy the sport, various concerts, and restaurants. Extra deputies will be assigned to ensure overcrowding and over-indulging does not ruin the day for those who attend the event responsibly. Traffic is expected to be heavier than normal, and those not attending the races may wish to consider alternate routes to avoid delays. |

Annual Report
The Sheriff's Department holds steadfast in its commitment to make San Diego the safest urban county in the nation. In October 2011, a state law called "prison realignment" passed. Under realignment, offenders charged and sentenced with non-serious, non-violent and non-sex crime felonies serve their time in local jail instead of prison. Realignment has created challenges, but the men and women of the Sheriff's Department are up to the task of keeping our neighborhoods safe. To learn more about our accomplishments, read our 2011 Annual Report. |
