The Green Build Construction Update

Construction on The Green Build continues to make headway -- and remains on time and within budget, making tracks toward a summer 2013 opening. Much of the activity has moved to the interior of the terminal building and is out of view from the public, as crews construct walls, install technology and plumbing, lay terrazzo flooring and install elevators.
Other updates include:

  • The installation of exterior metal panels on the west and north concourses is 99% complete.
  • Roofing installation is approximately 99% complete.
  • Pile foundations are 98% complete and only 10 remain out of a total of 622.
  • Final concrete paving along the perimeter of the terminal expansion has begun.
Sunlight Juxtaposed, the art piece formerly located in the security queuing area in Terminal 2, was removed and re-installed on the exterior of the terminal expansion, seen here.

Global Entry Arrives at San Diego International Airport

San Diego International Airport (SDIA) is the newest of just 27 airports nationwide to provide cutting edge Global Entry technology for international passengers.

Global Entry technology shortens the Customs process to just five minutes.
Global Entry allows travelers to bypass passport and baggage control lines and use an automated self-service kiosk to pass through Customs. The airport recently worked with officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to unveil the kiosks in the international arrivals area.

"We are pleased to be among the first airports in the nation to offer this customer convenience," said Thella F. Bowens, President/CEO of the Airport Authority. "Now, thanks to the Global Entry program, travelers will spend even less time in our Customs facility and more time enjoying San Diego. This is a great addition to the high level of service that allows SDIA to exceed customer expectations."

Global Entry kiosks feature a camera, touch-screen monitor, fingerprint reader, document reader, receipt printer and keypad. When passing through Customs, Global Entry travelers can proceed directly to the kiosks and activate the system by inserting their passport or U.S. permanent resident card into the document reader. They are then presented with a series of on-screen tests in order to verify their identity. The kiosks shorten the Customs process to just five minutes.

For $100, travelers can apply to be a part of the Global Entry program. Once approved, membership lasts for five years.

Relax at Be Relax

Need a spa day but don't have time to squeeze it in before your next business trip? Travelers in need of relaxation will soon be able to indulge in a massage, mani-pedi or facial while waiting for a flight at San Diego International Airport at two Be Relax Spa locations.

Be Relax will be located in Terminal 2 East and Terminal 2 West.
"The typical airport offers passengers a lot of food options but no services to help them relax," said Frederic Briest, co-CEO and partner of Be Relax. "Be Relax is a place travelers can go to take a break after a long business meeting or to help them start a vacation on the right foot."

The airport's Be Relax locations will feature a variety of cosmetic products, health services and beauty treatments that can be tailored to the amount of time the passenger has at the airport. Services will include a variety of massages, including hot stone and Thai, facials,
waxing and the Be Relax signature champagne manicure, where passengers can sip champagne while they are pampered.

Be Relax is partnering with First Class Concessions, a San Diego business, to ensure that the location fits the San Diego environment.
