Say Yes Summer Success Academy (SYSSA) Student Spotlight: Marisol Sinchico

"Say Yes Summer Success Academy (SYSSA) is a great program that gives us the opportunity to learn about college and get to know people from different cultures and different situations they come from. This program has helped us to get a head start for the fall semester. Attending Onondaga Community College (OCC) has helped me understand more about college life, how to be focused, and how to learn more effectively. The first day moving to campus I was nervous because I didn't know my roommates, and it was my first time being alone without a family member or a parent. But the first week I was surprised by how much I have learned not only about college but learning to work together and appreciating others for who they are. The first week going home from living in the dorms felt weird like I didn't belong there. I was anxious to get back to campus on Sunday. I am excited about what I can learn and what I can take from this program that will help me succeed in college."

Mini Golf Outing
Saturday, July 23rd
On Saturday, SYSSA students took a trip to Putter's Paradise on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt. Students played 18 holes of mini golf, used the batting cages, and enjoyed lunch and soft serve ice cream.
Team 6 (Joel Chico, Tial Iang, Justin Reach, and David Johnson) had the lowest cumulative score and each person won a Putter's Paradise water bottle. Bianca Mann, Abdi Ali, and Jamel McMullin competed in a hole-in-one contest for getting a hole-in-one on the first hole during the game. After a couple of close calls, Jamel finally won the contest and got a Putter's Paradise t-shirt as a prize.
Below are photos from the fun-filled day:

Support Member BBQ
Saturday, July 30th

The Support Member BBQ is finally here! The BBQ is a chance for SYSSA students to celebrate their successes with their professors, staff members, and two guests from home!
The Support Member BBQ will take place from 12:00pm - 2:00pm in the Bistro, which is located in the Gordon Student Center. The Bistro has an indoor seating area and an outdoor patio. Nearby the patio, there will be lawn games so that students and guests can relax and enjoy the afternoon together.
Each student may bring two guests. All faculty and staff involved with SYSSA are invited to attend!
We look forward to an afternoon full of food, friends, and fun!

First Faculty-Student Round Table
A lunch event on Friday, July 22nd
Last Friday SYSSA students attended the first faculty-student round table lunch. Faculty members were positioned at tables that were labeled by discipline. Professors of nursing, professional communications, business administration, mathematics and science, forensic science, and computer information systems were in attendance.
Faculty shared advice about academic success in college and in their particular field of expertise. Students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about different majors. Some students already enrolled in a specific major talked to faculty members from that field and learned about coursework, internship opportunities, and jobs.
The second faculty-student round table lunch will take place on August 5th at 1:00pm in Mawhinney Caf. Any OCC faculty member that would like to participate on August 5th should RSVP to Professor David VanArsdale.
